Manhattan, KS (AP) – It wasn't pretty, but Kansas has finally ended their 17 game losing streak to their arch rivals Kansas State, winning 21-14 in Manhattan on Saturday night. The win moves Kansas back above .500 in the Big Ten and sends the Governor's Cup back to Lawrence for the first time since 2008.
Kansas had an early chance to grab a lead in this one, driving the ball from their own 43 down to the K-State 26 on their opening possession, but Martin Connington pushed his 43 yard field goal attempt wide to the right.
Kansas State followed with a 14-play drive that ended with Joe Jackson getting stuffed on fourth and goal from the Kansas three yard line. Kansas then drove 96 yards in nine plays, scoring on a Dylan Edwards 19 yard run. The drive was kept alive when Kansas State was called for roughing the kicker on a punt, giving the Jayhawks a first down at the 36. Three plays later Edwards scored.
Midway through the second quarter, the Wildcats tied it up on an electrifying 59 yard touchdown run by Joe Jackson. Jackson took a draw and raced untouched straight up the middle, tying the game at 7-7.
Kansas had a chance to take the lead late in the half, but Martin Connington missed wide right from 51 yards out. The Jayhawks got the ball back and Isaiah Marshall completed a 25 yard pass to tight end Carson Bruhn down to the K-State 23 yard line, but time expired just as the play ended and Kansas would not get a field goal attempt. Kansas outgained K-State 235 to 187 in the opening half in a balanced attack that featured 22 runs and 18 passes.
Kansas received the second half kickoff and drove 81 yards in 12 plays, converting three third downs and scoring on a two yard pass from Isaiah Marshall to Nic McMillan, putting Kansas back in front 14-7.
Kansas State responded with an 11-play, 85 yard drive, tying the game on a 15 yard touchdown run by Rodney Fields Jr. The Wildcats converted a third and 17, and third and 12 on the drive with great plays by quarterback Avery Johnson.
Early in the fourth quarter, Kansas forced a punt, with Tate Nagy returning it 23 yards down to the K-State 38 yard line. On the next play, Isaiah Marshall hit Cam Pickett on a short crosser that Pickett turned into a 38 yard touchdown to put Kansas back in front for the third time in the game, 21-14.
Kansas State took the ball on the ensuing possession and drove it down to the Kansas 21 yard line. On fourth and three, they decided not to kick a field goal, and Joe Jackson was stuffed by free safety Taylor Davis for a two yard loss, turning the ball over on downs with 6:53 left.
The Wildcats would get one more chance, but on fourth and seven from midfield, Avery Johnson's pass was knocked down by Taylor Davis. Kansas would run out the clock, kneeling the ball down on the K-State three yard line to end the game, ending the 17 year losing streak to their arch-rivals.
Kansas outgained Kansas State 445 to 337, rushing 43 times for 200 yards. Isaiah Marshall was excellent, going 20 of 28 for 245 yards and two touchdowns. Dylan Edwards ran for 97 yards with a touchdown, and Cam Pickett caught six for 100 yards and a score.
