Morgantown, WV (AP) – Kansas faced their first road test in the Coach BigJ era and they passed it, as they rallied from an 11-point deficit to win 34-31, improving to (2-1) on the young season. The Jayhawks ran for 284 yards and are now second in the nation in rushing through three games, averaging 274.0 yards per game.

Kansas grabbed a 6-0 lead after one quarter thanks to two Martin Connington field goals, from 37 and 25 yards.

West Virginia got on the board early in the second quarter on a 29 yard field goal of their own from Neal Berger. After forcing a Kansas punt, the Mountaineers drove 79 yards in eight plays with Cam Cook scoring on a 25 yard touchdown run to give the Mountaineers the lead.

On the Jayhawks ensuing possession, Isaiah Marshall was picked off by Ben Cutter, who made a spectacular interception falling backwards near the goal line to keep the score 10-6. Six plays later, Cam Cook scored again, this time from 16 yards out and the Mountaineers went up 17-6. A key play on the drive was a 59 yard run by Cook on third and one at the West Virginia 25, just one play before the touchdown.

Tate Nagy returned the ensuing kickoff 42 yards out to the Kansas 42 yard line with 1:51 left until halftime. The Jayhawks went to work quickly, moving the 58 yards in four plays, all involving Dylan Edwards. He ran it three times for 20 yards, then caught a 32 yard touchdown to cut the West Virginia lead to 17-13 heading into halftime.

West Virginia held a slim 269 to 251 yardage advantage in the first half.

The Mountaineers received the second half kickoff and moved right down the field, scoring on a five yard run by Cam Cook to increase their lead to 24-13. Kansas took their opening second half possession, and drove it in ten plays down to the West Virginia six yard line, but an incomplete pass on third down led to Martin Connington's third field goal of the game, cutting it to 24-16.

The Kansas defense then stepped up, forcing a three and out, and getting the ball back at their own 42 yard line. Seven plays later, Isaiah Marshall found Nik McMillan for a 21 yard touchdown. The two connected on a two point conversion, to tie the game at 24-24.

Early in the fourth, with the game tied at 24, Martin Connington missed wide to the right from 51 yards out, on a kick that would have given the Jayhawks the lead. Seven plays later, Michael Hawkins threw a screen pass to Cam Cook, who took it 34 yards for a score to put the Mountaineers back up 31-24. On the play, tight end Josh Sapp just pancaked Jahlil Hurley inside the five yard line, allowing Cook to walk in with his fourth touchdown on the afternoon.

Kansas responded with a nine-play, 75 yard touchdown drive, capped off by a one yard touchdown run from Jalen Dupree to once again tie the game at 31-31 with 2:26 left in regulation. A key play on the drive was a 29 yard option keeper by Isaiah Marshall.

Kansas' defense would step up again, forcing a three and out, giving the ball back to their offense with 1:42 left. Facing a third and 19 at their own 45 yard line with 19 seconds left, Isaiah Marshall hit tight end Carson Bruhn for a gain of 20. Marshall then hit Nahzae Cox for a six yard gain to setup a game winning field goal attempt with two seconds left. Martin Connington nailed the 46 yard field goal as time expired to give the Jayhawks the huge road victory.

Kansas outgained West Virginia 525 to 432, rushing for 284 yards. Dylan Edwards ran for 125 yards on 25 carries and caught three passes for 44 yards and a score. Nik McMillan caught ten balls for 119 yards and a score. Isaiah Marshall threw for 241 yards and two scores, and ran it 14 times for 92 yards.

West Virginia's Cam Cook ran for 183 yards and three touchdowns, and caught five passes for 82 yards and another score in the losing effort.

Kansas (2-1, 1-0) returns to Big Ten action next Saturday at home as they will face Ball State (0-3, 0-2). West Virginia (2-1, 1-0) will have next week off before traveling to Liberty (1-2, 0-1) as they return to conference play.

9/26/26
Lawrence, KS (AP) – For the second time in two weeks, the Kansas Jayhawks overcame an 11 point second half deficit to win, this time 29-28 on the next to last play of the game over Ball State. Nik McMillan caught a three yard touchdown pass on fourth down with two seconds left to lift the Jayhawks to an improbable comeback victory.

Kansas' opening possession was a microcosm of the game as Isaiah Marshall was picked off by Quentavius Scandrett at midfield. Ball State took six plays to go 50 yards, scoring on a T.J. Horton seven yard run to take a 7-0 lead.

Kansas answered right back with a seven play, 80 yard drive capped off by a Dylan Edwards four yard touchdown run. Isaiah Marshall completed a huge ten yard pass to Nik McMillan on third and seven from the Ball State 14 yard line that kept the drive alive.

On the Jayhawks next possession, they took over at midfield after a 32 yard punt return from Dylan Edwards. They drove the ball down to the Cardinals 24 yard line, but Marshall was picked off again, this time by Willizhuan Yates in the endzone.

After another Ball State punt, Tate Nagy returned the punt 30 yards to midield. The Jayhawks moved the ball down to the Ball State seven yard line, but Isaiah Marshall took a sack on third down, leading to a 32 yard Martin Connington field goal that put Kansas up 10-7 early in the second quarter.

Kansas was driving again on their next possession. On fourth and four from the Ball State 43, the Jayhawks decided to go for it. Isaiah Marshall was sacked, fumbled and Ameir Glenn jumped on the loose ball at the Kansas 44 yard line. Two plays later, Jalen Bonds ran it 42 yards untouched for a score to put the Cardinals up 14-10.

Ball State forced a Kansas punt, taking over at their own 35 with 1:54 left until halftime. Keldric Luster completed passes of 12 yards to T.J. Horton, 29 yards to Sean Ward, and three yards to Donovan Hamilton, moving the ball down to the Kansas 22 yard line. On second down, Luster stepped up to his right and just before crossing the line of scrimmage, hit Jabari Smith Jr coming open across the middle for a 22 ayrd score to put Ball State up 21-10.

Kansas then committed their fourth turnover of the first half as Isaiah Marshall was picked off by Gavin Forsha, returning it to the Kansas 34 yard line with 31 seconds left until halftime. Ball State moved it to the Kansas 18, but after using their final timeout, Donovan Hamilton got tackled in bounds to end the half. That mistake proved to be critical as Ball State went into halftime only up 11 at 21-10.

The Jayhawks defense forced a three-and-out to open the third quarter, then put together a 13-play drive. But it ended in another Martin Donnington field goal, this time from 23 yards out, as Kansas cut the lead to 21-13.

After forcing another three-and-out, Dylan Edwards then had another huge punt return for Kansas, returning it 43 yards to the Ball State 24. Four plays later, Edwards ran it in from ten yards out, cutting it to 21-19. The two point conversion failed as Marshall got sacked.

Ball State put together what looked like a back breaking drive on their next possession, going 82 yards in eight plays with Keldric Luster hitting CJ Nelson for a 22 yard score and the Cardinals went up 28-19 late in the third quarter.

Early in the fourth, linebacker Trey Lathan made a game changing play. Down 28-19, Lathan picked off Keldric Luster, returning it nine yards down to the Ball State 15 yard line. Ball State's defense held Kansas to a 20 yard Martin Donnington field goal, but Kansas was within six at 28-22.

On the Jayhawks next possession, Jailen Butler was stuffed on a fourth and one run at the Ball State 36 yard line with 6:30 left. Kansas defense forced another three-and-out, giving the ball back to its offense at their own 30 with 5:33 left.

Kansas went back to its bread and butter, the running game. Grinding out the yardage and the clock, moving the ball down to the Ball State three yard line with five seconds left, facing a fourth and goal, Kansas dialed up a mesh play with Nic McMillan coming up underneath and Isaiah Marshall hitting him in stride. McMillan had to run through a defender at the goalline, but fell into the end zone for the score, tying the game at 28-28 with the extra point pending. Martin Connington made the point after to give Kansas a 29-28 lead with two seconds left.

The Jayhawks pooched the kickoff, and made the tackle to end the game.

Kansas rolled up 448 yards of offense with Isaiaha Marshall throwing for 275 with a touchdown and three interceptions. Nik McMillan caught ten passes for 83 yards, and scored the game winning touchdown. Dylan Edwards ran for 97 yards and caught seven passes for 55 yards.

Quentavius Scandrett was a menace on defense for the Cardinals, making ten tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, an interception and two pass break ups.

The win moves Kansas to (3-1, 2-0) on the season, and Ball State drops to (0-4, 0-3). The Jayhawks will step up in class next week as they travel to Bloomington to take on the defending National Champion and third-ranked Indiana Hoosiers (4-1, 3-1).

10/3/26
Bloomington, IN (AP) – There isn't much to say about this one, as #3 Indiana ran out to a 33-0 lead at halftime, and cruised to a 67-0 victory, their second consecutive shutout. This was a wake up call for a Kansas squad that was starting to dream big after barely getting by a couple of Big Ten bottom feeders in Northern Illinois and Ball State.

Kansas was competetive in the opening quarter, holding Indiana to field goal attempts on their first two drives, with Nico Radicic making one from 37 yards, and missing from 53 yards. But late in the opening quarter, Isaiah Marshall got sacked on a third and ten play, losing the ball, with Mario Landino picking it up and returning it 36 yards for a score to put Indiana up 10-0.

Josh Hoover threw three second quarter touchdowns and the Indiana defense added a safety to go up 33-0 at the half. Indiana outgained Kansas 289 to 77 in the first half.

Lee Beebe Jr scored from eight yards out in the third quarter, and the Hoosiers added a field goal to go up 43-0 after three quarters. In the fourth, the Hoosiers would add another defensive score as they put up 24 additional points to finish off the Jayhawks 67-0.

An embarassing loss all around for Kansas. The third-ranked Hoosiers outgained the Jayhawks 460 to 112, with Kansas turning the ball over five times, all in their own territory, leading to 35 Indiana points. Josh Hoover went 23 of 31 for 283 yards with three touchdowns and an interception, in the first half. Lee Beebe Jr ran it 24 times for 121 yards and a score. Charlie Becker caught six passes for 115 yards with a touchdown. Tight end Brock Schott caught six passes for 82 yards and two touchdowns.

Isaiah Marshall was pulled after halftime. He went 8 for 19 for 66 yards with a fumble. Chase Jenkins had a nightmare appearance, going 2 for 5 for nine yards with three interceptions. Star halfback Dylan Edwards was held to 25 yards on seven attempts. Nik McMillan caught four balls for 18 yards.

Kansas (3-2, 2-1) returns home next week as they will host Minnesota (2-2, 1-1). #3 Indiana (5-1, 4-1) will host Ball State (1-4, 0-3).

#2 Ohio State beat up on Northwestern 38-14 in the Horseshoe. #18 Iowa took care of Louisiana Tech and Nebraska blew out Iowa State. #6 Notre Dame barely escaped what would have been a devastating upset, as they held off a furious fourth quarter comeback to beat lowly Missouri State 31-26. GOLDEN GOPHERS DOMINATE
Minnesota Starts Slow, Finished Strong in 44-14 Victory

10/10/26
Lawrence, KS (AP) – For a second consecutive week, the Kansas Jayhawks were dominated. On Saturday afternoon, the Jayhawks lost 44-14 to Minnesota for their second straight loss, after winning three straight.

It did not start out bad for the Jayhawks. After forcing a punt on the Golden Gophers opening possession, Kansas drove down to the Minnesota 28 yard line, but Jalen Dupree got tripped up on a fourth and one run to end the drive.

The Kansas defense then forced a turnover on the next drive with Jahlil Hurley recovering a fumble at the Jayhawks 34 yard line. After forcing another Minnesota punt, Dylan Edwards returned the punt 30 yards down to the Minesota 41 yard line. The Jayhawks converted two fourth downs, and then scored as Isaiah Marshall ran an option keeper in untouched for a two yard score to put Kansas up 7-0.

Midway through the second quarter, the golden Gophers finally got on the scoreboard as Kyle Mount knocked a 40 yard field goal through, cutting the Kansas lead to 7-3. The Golden Gophers forced a three-and-out, then disaster struck for the Jayhawks. Donielle Hayes returned the punt 40 yards for a touchdown to give Minnesota a 10-7 lead.

On the Jayhawks next play, John Nestor picked off Isaiah Marshall at the midfield. But once again, the Kansas defense came up big with Jahlil Hurley picking off Drake Lindsay at the goal line to end the threat.

Kansas was able to move the ball out to their 40, but punted it back to Minnesota with a minute and a half left until halftime. Drake Lindsay quickly moved the Gophers down the field, finding a wide open Perry Thompson for a back breaking touchdown from 29 yards out to put Minnesota up 17-7 at the break. The Gophers outgained Kansas 214 to 133 in the opening half, but their two turnovers kept the game close.

Minnesota added a couple of field goals in the third quarter to stretch their lead to 23-7. Kansas defense was playing well enough to give them a chance, but the offense just could not get things going.

Early in the fourth, the Golden Gophers put the Jayhawks away. Darius Taylor scored from four yards out to make it 30-7. The key play on the drive was a third and 13 completion to Javon Tracy for 42 yards.

John Nestor then picked off Isaiah Marshall again, setting up the Gophers at the Kansas 20 yard line. Five plays later, Drake Lindsay scored on an option keeper, 37-7 Gophers.

Kansas' offense finally showed some life, driving 82 yards in six plays with Isaiah Marshall hitting Nahzae Cox for a four yard score on a jet sweep, but it was too little, too late.

Minnesota outgained Kansas 441 to 328, with Kansas rolling up a bunch of yards in garbage time in the fourth quarter. Darius Taylor was the star for Minnesota, running it 35 times for 157 yards and a score. Javon Tracy caught nine balls for 123 yards. Star corner John Nestor had two interceptions in the victory.

Isaiah Marshall had another tough game, going 23 of 46 for 180 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions. Dylan Edwards ran for 95 yards on 14 carries, and Nik McMillan caught eight passes for 69 yards. Jahlil Hurley had an interception and fumble recovery in one of the few defensive bright spots for Kansas.

The Jayhawks (3-3, 2-2) will next travel to Kansas State for the Sunflower Showdown next Saturday night. This is a very important game for Coach BigJ as he can meet two of his AD's goals with a win in Manhattan, beating rival Kansas State, and winning three conference games.
