Porter Poised for OC Role: Where Will the Rising Offensive Mind Land?
December 2, 2024 07:26 AM EST
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rumors are swirling around veteran assistant coach DJ Porter, who is widely expected to step into an offensive coordinator role after his impressive work developing quarterbacks and helping coordinate Sam Houston’s varied offensive attacks in recent seasons. According to multiple sources, Porter’s next move could hinge on which relationships and opportunities he values most.
Officially listed as a quarterback coach and passing game coordinator Porter has worked closely with a number of different offensive coordinators during his time as a coach and has a firm grasp of the ins and outs of a passing offense as well as a running game. He performed a number of duties for head coach K.C. Keeler during his time at Sam Houston.
One intriguing possibility is a reunion with former Sam Houston head coach K.C. Keeler, who was recently hired as head coach at Temple. Keeler’s teams have long leaned on Porter’s ability to mold quarterbacks and developing passing schemes—making him a natural candidate to follow Keeler to Philadelphia and install an offense that can compete immediately in the AAC.
“Coach Porter is one of the best offensive minds I’ve worked with,” Keeler said when asked about the speculation. “He’s got a unique ability to adapt to his personnel, and any program would be lucky to have him.”
Another potential landing spot is Delaware, where Porter could reunite with Blue Hens head coach Ryan Carty. The two have a deep history working together, and Delaware’s recent move to FBS competition make them a prime candidate for an experienced and multi-faceted play-caller to facilitate the program's move up.
“Porter knows what it takes to win,” said a Delaware staffer who asked to remain anonymous. “He brings a level of detail and creativity that can get us over the hump.”
Closer to home, some insiders speculate that Porter could return to his roots in Maine, either at the University of Maine—where he spent time early in his coaching career—or even with legendary former Black Bears coach Jack Cosgrove, who is now leading Colby College’s program. While Colby represents a step down to Division III, Cosgrove’s relationship with Porter and the appeal of coming home could outweigh the drop in profile.
“I’ve always admired his passion for the game and the way he connects with young men,” Cosgrove told local reporters. “If he wants to come back to Maine, we’d welcome him with open arms.”
Lastly, Porter is rumored to be on the short list of new Sam Houston head coach Phil Longo, a well-known offensive innovator who may look to keep Porter in Huntsville to maintain continuity. Longo and Porter were quite successful when they worked together from 2014-2017 at Sam Houston.
“We’re exploring all our options,” Longo said in a statement. “Coach Porter has done great work here, and I’d love to have him stay and help build something special.”
Wherever he lands, one thing is certain: Porter’s next chapter will shape not only his own career but also the future of whichever offense he’s entrusted to lead.

Can’t go wrong with either selection. Delaware would be the tougher rebuild for sure
