Nineteen runs, twenty-three hits, three errors and one absolutely absurd pitching line — the Angels lost a slugfest in Miami on Friday, falling 10-9 in a game that was decided long before it was over and somehow stayed within reach the whole way.

Los Angeles struck first when Ben Williamson took Nick Nardi 432 feet to center in the opening inning. Miami answered with four in the bottom half against Reid Detmers, chasing him with a barrage: Connor Norby doubled home Kyle Stowers, Owen Caissie singled Norby in, and Griffin Conine doubled to right to plate two more.

The Angels punched back with three in the second — O'Hoppe doubled and scored on a Josh Lowe single, then Ke'Bryan Hayes launched a 413-foot two-run shot to center. But the Marlins, working a bullpen game of their own, matched it immediately. Stowers homered to right, and Heriberto Hernandez followed with a three-run blast to left off Ryan Zeferjahn for an 8-4 lead.

Then Ronny Henriquez came in and refused to leave. The right-hander threw 164 pitches across 6.1 innings, walking six and allowing six hits and five runs, but kept getting outs when Los Angeles had him on the ropes. The Angels loaded the bases in the fifth on four walks, scored twice on a Lowe sacrifice fly, and stranded three. They put runners on in the sixth, the seventh, the eighth — and kept coming up empty.

Trout doubled home a run in the fourth. O'Hoppe homered 436 feet to left in the seventh. Trout went 432 feet to left in the eighth to make it 9-9. Each time, Miami had an answer, and the last one came in the bottom of the eighth against Drew Pomeranz, who allowed a Stowers single, wild-pitched pinch-runner Esteury Ruiz to third, walked Norby, and watched Ruiz score on an Agustín Ramírez fielder's choice.

That was the game. Trailing by one in the ninth, the Angels went down in order on 14 pitches.

Hernandez took Player of the Game honors at 3-for-5 with the homer, a double and four RBI. Henriquez earned the win despite the five earned runs and the pitch count. Pomeranz took the loss.

For Los Angeles: Trout 2-for-4 with a homer, double and two RBI. O'Hoppe 2-for-4 with a homer and double. Williamson 3-for-5. Eleven hits, nine runs, two errors — and one more loss.

"We should've won this game." - Los Angeles Angels manager Kurt Suzuki
