2026 Week Nine Preview
Arizona State (4-3) @ BYU (4-3)
The Devil's Due Mailbag — Week Nine Preview Image By: Emilio Suarez

In a bit of irony, the ASU Sun Devils will find themselves in Provo, Utah on Halloween night when they prepare to face the BYU Cougars. Get it? That's okay if you don't.

The scarier part for both of these teams was when the schedules were announced a mere months ago, many felt that one of these two programs would be on track to reach their respective conference championship game this season.

ASU has had an up-and-down season as they adjust to their youth movement, and life without Heisman hopeful Sam Leavitt, while BYU sprinted out of the starting blocks and are now starting down the barrel of a potential three-game skid.

Pitchfork Points

Image How healthy is Kyson Brown?
The versatile back only touched the ball four times last week, and actually accounted for negative yardage, in the win over Kansas State. Dillingham said his star back is healthy, but you have to question how much Brown can give this Sun Devils team. He was the catalyst early in the season and if he is limited, someone else in the backfield has to step up to keep the pressure off the young Fette.

Image Can ASU replicate what UCF did last week?
No one in Tempe is talking themselves into a potential defensive stand. We tried that a few weeks ago when he trudged into Lubbock and it blew up in our faces. What UCF did wasn't shut down the BYU offense, they forced them to be pass first, and controlled the clock. BYU was outscored 30-7 in the second half as UCF controlled the ball with 284 rushing yards. That's a formula the Sun Devils can, and should, exectute.

Image When is CJ Fite going to show up?
Fite is supposed to be the man in the middle. The one who eats blocks and demolishes double teams. Yet, he just recorded his first sack last week and only has one other TFL outside of that. He's been eating up double-teams, but not doing anything with them. Opponents are still respecting his game-wrecking ability, but with over half the season gone and little results, should they?

Sun Devils' Defense Wins the Day In Provo
21 Arizona State (5-3) @ BYU (4-4) 20 | LaVell Edwards Stadium | Provo, UT.
By Emilio Suarez Image October 31st, 2026
It was a scary night to be a quarterback on Halloween night in Provo, Utah. In a game that featured a pair of offenses that ranked in the top 20 of scoring, it was the defense's time to shine.

And it was apparent from the first play of the game.

Arizona State's defense has been much maligned, particularly its secondary that entered the Week Nine contest as the only Power 4 team without an interception. One play into the game, and that stat was no more as Lyrick Rawls jumped an RPO bubble screen and raced 21 yards for the pick-six.

A quick three-and-out by BYU gave the Sun Devils a short field to work with and Fette took advantage with a 1-yard strike to Kamari Anderson. The Sun Devils were up 14-0 and feeling good.

BYU wasn't going to bow quietly into the night and slowly started rallying. First, Bear Bachmeier led the first scoring drive for the BYU Cougars. Then Fette tossed an ill-advised interception that turned into a field goal. Another Fette interception—a throw he referred to as 'beyond stupid' in the postgame—led to the Cougars first lead of the game when Bear Bachmeier found TE Walker Lyons shortly before the two minute warning.

BYU entered the half boasting a 17-14 lead, but it wouldn't last long. In the best throw of the afternoon, Fette laced a bullet that turned into a shoestring catch by halfback Demarcius Robinson, who then outraced the Cougars for a 60-yard touchdown, putting the Sun Devils up for good.

BYU would have its opportunities, but could never fully capitalize on them. A red zone interception by Bear, his third of the game after only throwing four all season, kept BYU from capitalizing early in the fourth. LJ Martin was stuffed on a direct snap midway through the fourth, the second consecutive red zone trip without points for BYU. The Cougars would finally learn their lesson, kicking the 40-yard field goal just above the two minute warning to put the pressure on true freshman Jake Fette.

It almost worked.

After a pair of first downs, the ASU offense was in trouble. A failed screen pass was followed by a blown up run play, and with BYU using their timeouts, the Sun Devils were on the verge of punting the ball back to the Cougars with enough time to win the game.

Jake Fette went to his favorite target so far, Raiden Vines-Bright. The defender had him blanketed, nearly attached at the hip, but the young QB trusted his favorite receiver. Instead of playing the ball, BYU corner Jayven Williams shoved Vines-Bright once the pass was in the air. The flag flew and it was first down Arizona State.

BYU possessed no more timeouts and had to simply watch the seconds slip away as they fell to 4-4 after the penalty snatched away their final chance at orchestrating the comeback.

SS Lyrik Rawls
