Preview

South Carolina is taking the show on the road for the first time this season and it's one of the biggest tests they'll face this season as the Crimson Tide welcome them to Tuscaloosa with Kalen DeBoer looking to finally make this the season that he makes Alabama fans believers after taking over from legendary head coach Nick Saban three years ago.

The Gamecocks are coming into the game off the back of a 36-23 win over Mississippi State in their SEC opener, a game in which their defense expertly dealt with the dual threat ability of Bulldogs quarterback KaMario Taylor. They'll need more of the same against the Tide as Bama has redshirt freshman star Keelon Russell at quarterback. At the same time, they'll need to find a way to be more consistent running the ball themselves as that was something that they've struggled with in recent weeks.

Alabama heads into the game with their closest win of the season—a 17-point victory over Florida State in Bryant-Denny. So far this season, the Tide have looked like one of Saban's teams but that's not saying a lot when you consider they've only played East Carolina, Kentucky and Florida State. The Gamecocks will be their first ranked opponent, but DeBoer will need to keep his team focused as they have a murderers' row of games coming up in October, including Georgia, Tennessee and Texas A&M.

Tide exposes South Carolina as they roll to 4-0
Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium — Tuscalooa, AL
Alabama showed South Carolina that there are levels to this game as the Crimson Tide's defense brutalized the Gamecocks, beating them pillar to post in Alabama's 30-6 victory in Tuscaloosa.

South Carolina actually began the game brightly, driving down the field and getting a field goal to take an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter. The Tide would match them two drives later with a field goal of their own, and it was all over from there.

Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers fell off a cliff after three standout performances to begin the season. The junior signal caller threw his first three interceptions of the season and also fumbled the ball. One of those bad throws resulted in a touchdown through a Bray Hubbard pick six. Hubbard forced the turnover when Sellers threw the ball to a receiver standing in the middle of the field and facing the quarterback.

It was the bow on a 17-0 second quarter that blew the game open.

Gamecocks head coach Julian Sneed said sometimes it's not about the game you call but the talent of the players who are on the field.

"Alabama, no matter who the coach is, is going to be able to recruit some of the best players in the country. That's no different when you look across this team and the players they are putting out on the field," Sneed said. "Kudos to them but the Jimmys and Joes are almost always going to win out against the Xs and the Os. That's where we fell short today."

South Carolina struggled their way to 61 yards on the ground and barely broke 200 yards through the air, putting up their worst offensive performance of the season so far. A large part of those struggles were caused by junior edge rusher Yhonzae Pierre, who finished the game with three sacks.

On the other side of the ball, Alabama didn't need much from their offense with how badly things were going for their opponents. One could almost argue that the Gamecocks played just as good of a game defensively as Alabama did, however, a sputtering offense is always going to make things difficult for their defense.

"If your players are out there for 20, 30 minutes then they are going to start feeling that and it's no surprise that we were giving up touchdowns when we did, despite holding them to barely more than 300 yards," Sneed said. "As the guy calling the plays on offense, you have to lay the blame at my feet for how we call this one."

South Carolina will seek to pick up the pieces next week against Kentucky.

Despite it being expected, that's seriously gotta hurt. 3 picks, including one going to the house? Yikes.
