The Victory Lap: Rashawn Crouse's emergence, the Curious Case of Zach Yelk and Recruiting News

Stanford running back Rashawn Crouse had never gone west of Augusta, Georgia until his freshman season of high school. He never had a reason to. Crouse's father lived in Greensboro, North Carolina where he would visit during the summer. His older brother, Deshawn, was stationed at Fort Gordon in Augusta. Those were the only cities Crouse had ever stepped foot in until he was invited to a football camp at Kennesaw State as a rising sophomore.

The five hour car ride across the Peach State was about as far away from home that he had ever been. Nowadays, Crouse's home is 2,700 miles away from Savannah and the eighteen year old's gamble to follow Bubba Mack from Kennesaw to Palo Alto paid off on Saturday night when he introduced himself to the college football world.

The true freshman rushed for 150 yards against Notre Dame in primetime and had the defining play that helped spur the Cardinal's comeback effort in the 28-27 win over the Fighting Irish.

"I've been hearing about this kid since he was in the eight grade," Mack, who is from the Atlanta area and coached at Kennesaw State prior to his arrival at Stanford, "Whenever you get one of these kids that's from one of the more rural areas, you always wonder how they'll far against better competition but it was clear as day that he had the talent and the mentality to be a great player and he's shown that."

Crouse has made the most of his opportunities behind two veterans in star running back Trumaine Lasike and Anthony Masifilo with Masifilo having a breakout season in own right, averaging eight yards per carry but even Mack said after the game that the freshman has earned more carries.

"We like our rotation so we're going to continue to get guys involved but when you come out and play like that, you definitely make coaches more willing to put you out there or keep you in for one more play."

Another 0-fer for former star recruit Zach Yelk
Rodney Cookus had a really tough day against the Irish, failing to register a catch for the first time this season and had two drops, including a back-breaking one on third down when Stanford was trying to ice the game in the fourth.

With Tyrone Nicks banged up in that game, Alex Rowe didn't have a lot of experience out there at receiver with true freshmen Alfonso Bramble, Brent Baker and Kyle Morrison being the top receivers in the rotation that game.

Their leading returning receiver, Zach Yelk, was nowhere to be found. Yelk played just eight snaps and finished with zero catches for the third time this season after seemingly starting to put it together with 35 receptions for 404 yards and two touchdowns last year.

Yelk was a major recruiting win for Mack during his transition class but since the opener, where Yelk played seventeen snaps, he's had more than fifteen snaps just once and it came in the blowout against SMU where he had zero catches as well in twenty-two snaps.

He appears to have been supplanted by Baker and Morrison who have combined for nineteen receptions for 258 yards between them.

Is it time to worry about recruiting?
The Cardinal are coming off two successful seasons under Mack, including winning two playoff games last year, and seemed poised to turn the corner as a sleeper program into one of the best in the ACC and in the country.

Recruiting is the lifeline of all of this and after having a really good class last year, it just doesn't seem that the momentum has carried onto this season. Top quarterback target JaMichael Jackson recently announced his commitment to Notre Dame, giving the Irish a consolation prize over Stanford.

In the last three weeks, Stanford has missed out on five-star cornerback Tyler Fine (Oklahoma), four-star receiver Lyle Willingham (Clemson), four-star offensive lineman Jamar Dacus (Clemson), four-star cornerback Sergio Fraboni (Texas A&M), four-star linebacker David Matungulu (Michigan) and four-star linebacker Najee Berryman (USC).

Stanford has shown a willingness to go national and go head to head with top programs and while this has netted them guys like Crouse and five-star cornerback Kentrell Marvin in last year's class who came up big against Notre Dame, you do wonder if the Cardinal are perhaps taking too big of swings.

Image HB Nick Bragg (Junior) Broken Tailbone (Out)
Image LT Manny Manzo (Sophomore) Dislocated Ankle (Out)
Image C Earl Thomas (Freshman) Broken Tailbone (Out)

Players to Watch
Image HB Jaron Dennis (R-Sr) | 6′1", 213LBS | 84 OVR, 87 SPD, 91 ACC, 95 COD, 82 CAR, 84 JKM
Nick Bragg is a huge loss for the Orange but Syracuse did go out and get a solid backup in the portal in Dennis who had six rushing touchdowns for Maryland last year. He struggled against Clemson in his first start but did have 112 yards in the season opener, albeit against FCS, and averaged nearly nine yards per carry against Penn State. He's already caught ten passes this season and the Stanford defense has been susceptible in the flats so this could be a breakout game for Dennis.

Image C Larry Searcy (Fr) | 6′4", 306LBS | 59 OVR, 78 STR, 62 PBK, 68 RBK
This was already an area of concern for the Orange with a true freshman starting at center in Earl Thomas. Since taking over for the injured Thomas, Searcy has allowed a sack in all but one game (Ohio) and could be in for a long day on Saturday as Stanford will surely try to get him in one-to-one matchups.

Image CB Brian Willett (R-Sr) | 6′2″, 176LBS | 82 OVR, 87 SPD, 90 ACC, 99 COD, 89 MCV, 81 ZCV, 82 PRESS
The Cardinal are going to try to get Rodney Cookus involved early and often after being shutout last week and he'll likely be matched up against Willet. The six-foot-two corner has been on quite a journey going from James Madison to Colorado State to South Carolina before landing at Syracuse. He got cooked against Duke, surrendering five catches and then gave up four catches against Pitt and three against Clemson.

Mack losing his touch on the recruiting trail now that he’s not doing shady shit

Is that a 59 overall starter…? :boyplease:

Stanford to cover, over. Also, is this going by most “wins” or winning percentage?
