DELAWARE STRUGGLES WITH RUTGERS, PUTS THEM AWAY LATE
Kelsay finds Amankwaa late in the fourth quarter to secure 10th win

Newark, Delaware - On a cold Halloween afternoon at Delaware Stadium, the Blue Hens overcame turnovers, a 14-point second-half deficit, and a stingy Rutgers defense to notch their 10th win of the season in thrilling fashion. Quarterback Mason Kelsay connected with Thomas Amankwaa on a 22-yard touchdown pass with 1:13 remaining, lifting Delaware to a 38–35 comeback victory over the visiting Scarlet Knights.
After being held scoreless through much of the second half and trailing by 11 in the fourth quarter, Delaware's offense caught fire when it mattered most. Junior running back Darrion Dupree carried the offense with three rushing touchdowns, including two in the final frame, to claw the Blue Hens back into contention.
“It was gutsy,” said head coach Tony Sanchez. “We made some mistakes, but this team just doesn’t blink. They trust each other.”
Delaware found itself in trouble early. Rutgers quarterback Ethan Schultz tossed three touchdown passes, highlighted by a 47-yard strike to Corri Milliner, and Kaj Sanders added a 24-yard pick-six on a tipped ball to give the Scarlet Knights a 28–17 lead entering the fourth quarter. Delaware had moved the ball well all afternoon, but a pair of interceptions from Kelsay threatened to undo their advantage in time of possession and total yards.
But the Blue Hens, outgaining Rutgers 437–321 in total offense and converting 10-of-16 third downs, stayed composed. Dupree capped an 11-play drive with a bruising score from a yard out to pull Delaware within five, though a failed two-point attempt kept the pressure on.
Just minutes later, Dupree finished off a short drive with his third score of the day, a physical 9-yard burst up the middle, and then added a successful two-point conversion to put the Blue Hens ahead 31–28.
The celebration was short-lived.
Rutgers responded in a flash, with Peyton Jones breaking through arm tackles for a stunning 32-yard touchdown run to reclaim the lead. Delaware’s defense, which had been stressed all game, gave up its biggest play of the day at the worst time.
Down 35–32 with under three minutes to go, the Blue Hens mounted their final drive. Kelsay, shaking off earlier miscues, found Amankwaa on a tight-window dart while rolling to his right for the game-winning 22-yard score down the middle.
“I knew I had a mismatch,” said Amankwaa, who finished with 9 receptions for 109 yards. “Mason put it exactly where it needed to be.”
Kelsay finished the day with 277 passing yards on 25-of-39 attempts with one touchdown and two interceptions, while also rushing for a score.
Dupree was a workhorse, rushing 18 times for 93 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore Yannick Smith added 58 yards on four grabs.
Defensively, KT Seay and safety Kingsley Royal led the team in tackles, while Ted Krumholz notched a crucial sack.
For Rutgers, Schultz was efficient and aggressive, throwing for 235 yards and three touchdowns. Their defense was led by Calhoun and Ofurie, who combined for 26 tackles, and Sanders' pick-six nearly stole the game.
With the win, Delaware improves to 10–0 on the season, continuing its best campaign in school history. The Blue Hens controlled tempo, dominated first downs (27–12), and converted every fourth-down attempt. The two interceptions hurt, but when it counted most, they delivered.
As November looms, so too does the national conversation.
“We’re not done,” said Kelsay. “We’re just getting started.”
