Cody Cannon puts up solid numbers at combine

Cody Cannon shined on the field for the Bison over the past three seasons, catching 141 passes for 2,566 yards and 36 touchdowns in his three seasons at NDSU.

Yesterday he got his chance to shine amongst his peers at the NFL combine.

Cannon elected to participate in most of the drills, skipping the broad jump and the three cone drill.

Cannon ran a 4.44 40 yard dash, good for 12th best amongst the 48 wide receivers on hand.

In the bench press Cannon was able to put up 19 reps, tying him for sixth best.

Cannon's vertical was 36.5", tying him for 20th.

Cannon excelled in the position drills portion of the event, catching all of the required passes and showing off great hands.

"It's trickier with the FCS guys sometimes." One NFC scout said. "You don't get to see them against elite competition very often so it's good to see the numbers from the measureables and then the position drills are really important."

"We had him as a round four or five guy and I think he showed us enough that we're probably comfortable looking at him in the third. He maybe didn't jump out during the speed and strength stuff put together a really nice performance in the position workout." Another scout added.

The NFL Draft begins on April 25th.

Cade Cannon assigned to Altoona as Pirates wrap up spring training

The Pirates announced their opening day roster on Thursday and one of their most exciting players from spring training was not on it.

Cade Cannon, who played in 16 games and stole eight bases, has been assigned to AA Altoona of the Eastern League where he is expected to lead off and start in center field for the majority of the Curves' games.

"We definitely saw a lot of things we liked." Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said of Cannon. "We're excited to see him develop and see what he can bring to the club."

Pittsburgh opens their season tonight and Altoona gets things started on April 4th.

Player Bio
Cannon elected to stay at home and play for NDSU despite some FBS offers. In high school he was an all state selection as a junior and a senior, he led the state in receiving yards and touchdowns as a senior. In three seasons at NDSU Cannon caught 141 passes for 2,566 yards and 36 touchdowns, including an 83/1,600/24 season last year. Cody's older brother Cade was the starting QB at NDSU last season and is now with the Pittsburgh Pirates as an outfielder. Cannon helped NDSU win the FCS championship each of the past two seasons.

Draft Projection: Rounds 3-4

Overview
Produced elite numbers against a lower level of competition. He is as natural a pass catcher as you will find with desired competitive drive on each snap. Plays hard on every snap, even as a run blocker. His transition to NFL-level cornerbacks will take time, but he has the ability to become an early No. 3 receiver and eventual starter.

Strengths
-Elite level of production for any level of football
-Set school records for receptions, yards and touchdowns in a season
-Two time champion in college
-Big, natural and strong hands
-No dropped passes last season
-Willing run blocker
-Beats press coverage

Weaknesses
-A bit of an upright runner
-Fast but not overly quick
-Sometimes lazy on cuts, won't get separation against better CBs
-Benefitted greatly from being on a team far better than their opponents in most games in college

Should the Pirates call up Cade Cannon?

Is Cade Cannon MLB ready? Probably not, but I still would love to see him in the outfield at PNC like yesterday.

Cannon has played in 63 games for the Altoona Curve, the Pirates AA affiliate. Cannon is hitting .247 with seven triples, two home runs, 24 RBI and 12 stolen bases. The 23 year old speedy outfielder has shown improvements at the plate and is an absolute weapon on the base paths.

Yesterday the Pirates traded outfielder Corey Dickerson to the Phillies for essentially nothing. Starling Marte and Melky Cabrera are almost guaranteed to be gone after this season. Brian Reynolds is doing well in Pittsburgh and quite frankly the team isn't very good, sitting at 47-61 and having just recently lost nine straight games.

So, why not get Cannon up in Pittsburgh and let him and Reynolds play together and give us something to be excited about?
