BERKELEY, CA • California's early-season momentum continued Saturday afternoon, as the Golden Bears overwhelmed Wagner (FCS) 41-0 to improve to 3-0.
While the offense once again showcased its firepower, this game belonged to Adam Mohammed and a relentless California defense that spent the afternoon living in the Wagner backfield.
Mohammed earned Player of the Game honors after delivering his best performance of the season, rushing for 140 yards on just 10 carries while scoring three total touchdowns. The explosive junior averaged an eye-popping 14.0 yards per carry, highlighted by a breathtaking 78-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that brought the California Memorial Stadium crowd to its feet.
He opened the scoring with a 12-yard touchdown run in the first quarter before later hauling in a 3-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele. By the time his 78-yard sprint found the end zone, the outcome had long been decided.
Sagapolutele continued his impressive start to the season, completing 26 of 39 passes for 354 yards and three touchdowns, spreading the ball around while keeping the offense moving all afternoon.
But the biggest story wasn't the offense.
It was California's defense.
The Golden Bears completely overwhelmed Wagner from the opening kickoff, holding the Seahawks to just 108 total yards while recording a staggering eight sacks. Wagner managed only six first downs, averaged 2.3 yards per play, and finished with negative-72 rushing yards after the constant pressure from Cal's defensive front.
Every time Wagner attempted to establish a rhythm, another Golden Bear defender crashed into the backfield.
Quarterbacks rarely had time to set their feet.
Running lanes disappeared before they developed.
The result was one of the most dominant defensive performances of the young season.
California's defense also forced a turnover and never allowed Wagner to reach the red zone, pitching the program's first shutout of the year in convincing fashion.
