After a dominant victory over the winless Hawaii Rainbow Warriors last week, the Arizona State Sun Devils marched to Galaxy Stadium to face the 8th-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders with renewed confidence. They quickly learned that there was a massive gap in talent between Hawaii and Texas Tech, who bludgeoned the Sun Devils to the tune of 48-14 on the back of another monstrous performance by Cutter Boley.

Early in the second quarter the Sun Devils still had a glimmer of hope. Boley had tossed a red zone interception on the previous drive, which turned into the Red Raiders first touchdown of the game after marching 94 yards, but he'd answered right back with a touchdown drive of his own.

Then, Hammond led another march. Arizona State missed a field goal. Hammond answered with a 66-yard strike to Malcolm Simmons immediately after. Boley answered with another interception. Then another as the Red Raiders turned three turnovers into 17 points and took a commanding 31-7 lead into the half.

Still, Boley exited the tunnel to lead the Sun Devils out in the second half.

"Cutter was doing some good things with the football. He'd lead us to an opportunity at the end of the half, so we felt like he could build on that out of the break," explained OC Marcus Arroyo after the game.

Boley had led a final, last-gasp effort after his third interception, but the 47-yard attempt fell short and the Sun Devils were left with nothing. Boley didn't do himself any favors to start the second half, airmailing his first pass attempt into the arms of Malik Esquerra. His fourth interception of the game finally earned him a trip to the showers.

Mikey Keene at least sparked some offense in the second half, tossing a touchdown, though he was also plagued by turnovers, fumbling twice and throwing his own interception on a Hail Mary to end the game.

"Frustrating," sighed a visibly frustrated Kenny Dillingham after the game. "You need consistency out there to win games. Even more so against a National Championship hopeful like Texas Tech. And we didn't execute on that front. I apologize to all the Sun Devils fans back home, you deserve better than what we put on the field today."

"I promise, we'll get there."

Dillingham declined to comment on who would line up under center when the undefeated Kansas State Wildcats stalked into Mountain America Stadium next week.

Maurice Stewart locks in commitment to Tempe, but the Sun Devils miss out on a bigger fish

Arizona State may still be reeling from a disastrous trip to Lubbock, Texas, but Sun Devil fans can at least take solace that Dillingham is continuing to win recruits out on the trail.

After reportedly trailing the Cal Golden Bears for much of the season, the Sun Devils finally broke through, securing a commitment from Maurice Stewart at the last possible minute for the 201st-ranked WR in this year's cycle.

"Stewart is a sneaky-burner," described Anthony Peerman of On3 when reached for comment, "He doesn't have that straight line speed, nor do his measurables pop out during work-outs. Yet, you watch the tape and he's gliding by defenders on deep balls, or leaving them grasping at air as he makes a calculated cut to gain five more yards."

"His problem is going to be adjusting to the pro game. He utilized his sneaky-speed exclusively in high school, and there it worked. It won't in the Big XII. He has to become more than one-trick pony if he wants to have an impact."

While Stewart finally put pen to paper, another commitment made the opposite move. Darrius Witherspoon had ASU ranked #1 according to many close to the Bronx, NY native for most of the season.

"Arizona State was the first school to scout him, first to offer him, and first to give him a competitive NIL package. Then, when Pittsburgh finally came around and showed interest, ASU raised their NIL offer," revealed Darrius' father Rafer.

"We didn't influence him, but ultimately, Darrius wanted to stay close to home."

Despite the constant courting by the Sun Devils, the idea of playing so close to his home, and sick mother Ilya, finally swayed the 391st-rated corner, and the 38th-overall at his position, to make the decision to go to nearby Pittsburgh.

"You want these kids to do what is best for them, best for their families, but losing a kid with his talent this late in the game? It hurts," admitted recruiting coordinator Zek Williams after the news broke.

While the late loss to Pittsburgh hurts, the Arizona State Sun Devils recruiting class is still in a solid position at the midway point of the season. With seven total prospects locked in, they sit comfortably at 39th nationally despite having only signed three-star recruits to this point. With three more prospects—T Leo Merrick, DE Tahj Cheeseman, and TE Vernon Toone—reportedly preparing to officially make a verbal commitment soon, Arizona State should hit double-digit recruits before they hit November.

The Collin Klein era in Manhattan has started with a bang as the former K-State alum has the Wildcats off to a sparkling 6-0 start. The Sun Devils are hoping to fully embrace their new role of spoiler, and put the first mark in the loss column for Klein when the Wildcats make the trip to Tempe to face off against the reeling Sun Devils.

With three losses, and two of them being in conference, the Sun Devils hopes of crashing the College Football Playoff again are up in flames and their Big 12 championship aspirations won't be far behind with another loss, making this a must-win for ASU.

Image Mikey Keene is presumably taking over, but should he?
Before I get my inbox flooded with hate mail. I am not saying Cutter Boley should be returning to the starting line up. He has promise, but the poise isn't there. Once he gets rattled, he stays rattled. No, instead I'm suggesting that maybe Keene isn't the guy who should be relieving him. Keene was solid last week, but there was no pressure since the game was already out of hand. We've seen what Keene can do at four different stops. He isn't going to be here next year. Let's give the reps to Fette. He's young, he's hungry, and unless we find something better through the portal, he's likely the future. Kenny Dillingham hasn't announced the starter yet, but I for one am praying that Fette takes the snap. Let the youngin get his feet wet, Kenny. C'mon.

Image The defense needs to figure something out.
Pick one. Be a terrible secondary that gets after the quarterback. Get shredded through the air, but hold steadfast on the ground. At least be good at one thing. The Sun Devils have done that in their wins this season. Their losses? Not so much. I understand the turnovers put them in a precarious spot, but one sack? Still no interceptions? Eight yards a carry? We could have no turnovers and still lose with that effort. We need to at least pick one thing to excel at and really get after it. I for one hope the pass rush finds its groove with the return of Emar'rion Winston.

Image The run game needs more consistency against top-tier opponents.
The Sun Devils have been pounding the rock this season with the 7th most rushing yards per game nationally. The problem in our losses, like against Texas Tech last week, was if we didn't get the big run, we didn't get anything at all. Kyson Brown has been dynamic, but only averaged 3 yards per carry against Texas Tech. Not to absolve Boley, but it's hard to succeed against a stout defense like TTU when you're facing 3rd-and-7 all game. We have to get more than just the chunk plays to keep the chains moving, the play action game working, and the RPO firing on all cylinders.

Wildcats Get Torched In Tempe

Everyone expected veteran Mikey Keene to take the field for the Arizona State Sun Devils on a sweltering afternoon in Tempe, Arizona. Kenny Dillingham instead trotted out true freshman Jake Fette. The Sun Devils trusted the process.

When Fette went three-and-out on his opening drive, nobody panicked. When Avery Johnson and Joe Jackson exchanged methodical runs that brought the K-State offense into the red zone, they trusted the process.

Lyrick Rawls leveled a vicious hit on Joe Jackson, rattling the ball free on the four-yard line, turning what everyone seated in Mountain America Stadium assumed to be a touchdown into a turnover.

Two plays later, Jake Fette found Jalen Moss on a streak route for a 90-yard touchdown.

Every time the Wildcats mounted a drive, the Sun Devils patiently waited for their opportunity to thwart their progress.

Kansas State reached the red zone four times in the contest, but they would not reach the end zone. After some fireworks before the half led to a pair of field goals for each side, ASU went into the half with a slim 13-6 lead. But, after the debacle in Lubbock a week ago, no one was complaining. A lead was a lead.

Then, the Wildcats fumbled the opening kickoff of the second half, Fette turned it into a touchdown, and the Sun Devils were sharpening their pitchforks.

It wasn't all sunshine. Fette threw an interception midway through the third quarter, but instead of panicking, the Sun Devils steeled themselves, holding Avery Johnson and the Wildcats to their final field goal of the game.

"He went up to each and every member of the defense and apologized, then thanked them for keeping the Wildcats out of the end zone," marveled Kenny Dillingham after the game. "I haven't seen many veteran quarterbacks do that, let alone a true freshman making his first start."

"He was everything we needed this afternoon to right the ship."

It's only one game, but after the disaster in Lubbock a week ago, the 34-9 win will do for now.
