LSU lands top transfer portal cornerback Thomas Gann as Stanford finishes second in his recruitment
Chris Wallace -- 247Sports Stanford Football Insider

The top ranked cornerback in the transfer portal and Stanford's top target this offseason has been Colorado's Thomas Gann who announced on Wednesday, the deadline for transfer portal players to sign, that he will be committing to LSU, picking the Tigers over Stanford and Notre Dame.

Gann was a major priority for the Cardinal and they felt really good about their chances to land Gann after he left Baton Rouge without signing but ultimately the chance to play at a school like LSU, known for their defensive backs, proved to be too much to overcome.

Stanford was able to sign a highly ranked corner in Kent State's Paul Garrison who had four interceptions last year and is looking to make the jump to the P4 level which is the biggest question mark surrounding Garrison. They added two more corners in Greg Dillard and Gordon Pratt with Dillard, who had two interceptions and five pass breakups at Minnesota, expected to compete for a starting spot.

The Cardinal also loaded up at the quarterback position, signing three quarterbacks in Logan Everett, Leon Shurmur and JaMichael Jackson who will be competing for the backup job and to be the quarterback in waiting, presumably.

They also added Maryland defensive end David Drake who they recruited out of high school and was teammates with current running back Malik Marshall in high school.

While the transfer portal class was ranked 39th, partly due to signing just eight players, many of which are depth pieces, Stanford's eleventh ranked high school class is the second highest in Mack's tenure at Stanford, bested only by the 2030 class which featured a five-star in Kentrell Marvin and the deepest class that Stanford has signed in the transfer portal era as there was a self-imposed transfer portal ban that year.

Rallied back pretty soundly. Looks like you clogged some holes despite swinging and missing on some of your bigger targets in the portal.

Won the natty and proceeded to struggle to bring in players. Bubba Mack just isn’t a good recruiter and can’t pitch his milquetoast culture.

gotdamn you bring in enough QBs? :dead:

SN - I love bringing in freshman transfers. 5* pedigree and if they have good dev traits they usually become 5* caliber after training

Stanford Spring Football Preview: Names to watch as Cardinal look to repeat as national champions

Stanford football opens spring practice next weekend as the coaching staff opted for a later start to accommodate for the long season and short off-season which saw Stanford play fifteen games and end their season halfway through January and will look to do it all over again.

The Cardinal are well placed for a title defense with them returning the bulk of their offensive productive, including quarterback Earl Nienhuis, the entire running back and receiver room and a few starters along the offensive line. They lose some key starters on defense, especially at corner, but bring back a lot of experience on that side as well, both from last year's team and some additions via the transfer portal.

While guys like Paul Garrison, the transfer cornerback from Kent State or Colt Mixon, the sophomore tight end who won the Mackey as a true freshman, might be obvious names to watch and players that will be highlighted, here are some players that need to have a really good spring practice to solidify their chances to start come fall and in some cases, secure a roster spot with the second transfer portal window looming after spring.

The backup quarterback job
Stanford brought in three transfer portal quarterbacks as well as a high school arm in Danny Roldan. It's an interesting bunch with Logan Everett, the transfer from Ole Miss, being the eldest as a redshirt sophomore but he has yet to play a single snap of college football. He's the closest to starter Earl Nienhuis in terms of playing style as someone that wants to operate from the pocket in rhythm and on time.

We just haven't seen Everett play at all so there's a lot of question marks but coming out of high school, the talent was always evident with Everett but he needed to show better consistency which will be something to watch in the spring.

Jamichael Jackson and Leon Shurmur offer something different with their ability to extend plays with their legs and making something happen. We could see a situation where a package could be built for them, especially in the redzone, to take advantage of that different skillset as we haven't seen the Cardinal with a true mobile quarterback since Tavien St. Clair. If Jackson or Shurmur can only that component of Stanford's offense, they could position themselves nicely to be the quarterback-in-waiting.

The receiver position is wide open
Stanford signed three highly touted receivers two seasons ago in Alfonso Bramble, Kyle Morrison and Brent Baker who all played prominent roles as true freshmen.

Last season, however, we saw a diminished role for Morrison and Baker as the year went on and they struggled to make an impact. Morrison's numbers remained about the same, catching 25 passes for 213 yards compared to 22 for 235 as a freshman but his last multi-catch game came in week eleven against Oregon.

For Baker, he finished the last three games of the season without a single catch and his only catch of over ten yards on the year came against LSU in garbage time.

Stanford added three high school receivers, notably four-star Damien Yeboah who will be fighting for a role and brought in speedster Shaquille Knight in the portal and return Timmy Neil who was more productive than both Baker and Morrison despite playing less snaps.

Does Juan Becht etch out a role for himself?
Stanford lost their two starting outside corners in J.T. Kipper and Chauncey Ankrah to graduation but one player that saw significant playing time at that position was Juan Becht.

Becht had an up and down season, being solid at times while also giving up some big plays while Ankrah was sidelined with an injury. Even when Ankrah returned, he continued to play a major role, notably playing 31 snaps in the national championship game.

Stanford went big game hunting in the portal at the position, landing Paul Garrison as one of the top corners in the portal and then added depth in Greg Dillard and Gordon Pratt. This does potentially leave Becht as the odd man out as Stanford clearly wanted to upgrade at the position.
