Stanford pulls away from Oklahoma to win first national championship since 1940
Stanford punter D.J. Ball took the field with five minutes left in the game for his first punt of the game. Stanford has already scored 56 points. Oklahoma's backups had been in for the last two drives. Perhaps most fittingly, the ensuing drive resulted in a quick three and out by the Sooners offense as their season ended with a whimper in Glendale, unable to keep pace with Stanford's offense after a torrid start to fall to the Cardinal 56-35 in a lopsided victory for Stanford as they claimed their first national championship in nearly a century.

Stanford running back Anthony Masifilo was the star of the night with a career high 230 yards rushing and three touchdowns, including a 47-yard touchdown in the third quarter that led to Oklahoma waving the white flag and pulling their starters.

The first quarter action was electric with both teams scoring on their first two drives before Stanford's came up with a stop on third and thirteen early in the second quarter while leading 21-14. After an early completion on the drive, Stanford would run the ball eleven straight times to punch it in from the one-yard line and take the two score lead and never look back.

Heisman winner Sean Cheeseman would respond to that drive with a touchdown only for Masifilo to break off a 46-yard run on the second play of the next drive to set up the scrambling touchdown run by Earl Nienhuis at the two-minute mark to make it a two possession game.

Stanford would extend their lead heading into the half after forcing a three and out from Oklahoma's offense and then Rodney Cookus had his second touchdown of the day on a forty yard catch and run across the heart of Oklahoma's defense to begin the rout.

That second quarter was the difference. Put the game away early there. Earl with more touchdowns than incompletions is something for a championship game.

Looks like Mendoza out there getting the win.
