Baltimore, MD. - The Pittsburgh Steelers exacted revenge on the rival Baltimore Ravens for their 42-34 loss at home in Week Eight, leaning on several former Ravens in the 28-18 Pittsburgh win. With Baltimore two games behind the Steelers in the standings, the desperation was real for the Ravens who are all but eliminated with a loss. That mentality was evident on the opening drive for the Ravens as they marched into the red zone, but facing 4th-and-2 from the 18 yard line, opted to attempt the 4th-down conversion, rather than take the field goal.
Instead of keeping the drive alive, former Raven Marlon Humphrey crashed from the slot and buried running back Kendre Miller for a loss and turnover on downs.
The Ravens ultimately struck first in the contest with a 46-yard catch and run by rookie tight end Benjamin Brahmer, who stiff armed Alohi Gilman on the reception before accelerating for the score. The Steelers would answer back with a pair of touchdowns by another former Raven, Keaton Mitchell, whose 24-yard scamper put the Steelers in the lead for good.
Midway through the 3rd quarter, trailing 14-10 after a Tyler Loop field goal before the half, Baltimore got aggressive again. On the Steelers 36 yard line, once again facing 4th-and-4, the Ravens went for the conversion. The play-action pass was read perfectly by yet another former Raven, Patrick Queen, who buried Jackson for the sack. To add insult to injury, the Steelers marched the turnover into the end zone after Richardson found Zachariah Branch on a tunnel screen for the 10-yard score and a 21-10 lead.
Baltimore would respond early in the 4th quarter with Jackson finally slashing through the Steelers defense for a 44-yard scamper, before doing the work himself with a 2-yard touchdown run. Suddenly, the commanding 21-10 lead the Steelers owned was cut to three after the two-point conversion by Baltimore.
But reigning MVP Anthony Richardson didn't panic, leading a calm and precise drive that chewed nearly six-minutes off the clock before he showed off his versatility with his own two-yard touchdown run.
Facing 4th down from midfield with the clock winding down, a desperation heave by Jackson was picked off before the Steelers ran out the clock.
It was a gritty win that is synonymous with the physical rivalry the Steelers and Ravens shared and after the game, coach Mike Tomlin didn't mince words.
"This is a game you go into every year knowing you're going to get the shit beat out of you, and it's just a matter of who has the fortitude to last 60 minutes. They got us earlier this year, we got them this time. I think it speaks to the culture we've built here that the key contributors this game, are all guys who used to be on the other side. That shows that despite the rivalry, we respect each other.
"But at the end of the day, those players in Baltimore know who runs the north now."
