Steelers Throttle Browns To Clinch #1 Seed

It was a sack party in Cleveland as the Steelers tallied 7 sacks, eventually knocking Shedeur out of the game in the 3rd Q.

Cleveland, OH. - A year ago, the Pittsburgh Steelers stood one win away from securing both the AFC North and the conference’s No. 1 seed, only to watch the Baltimore Ravens storm into Acrisure Stadium and deliver a 42–20 gut punch that flipped the division, altered the playoff bracket, and ultimately sent Pittsburgh on the road to Buffalo for a wild card loss.
“I wasn’t here last year, but you could feel that doubt when you talked to fans,” Anthony Richardson said after Sunday’s statement win. “We had to show that, respectfully, we’re different this year.”
And the Steelers did just that, erasing any lingering ghosts of last week’s collapse against Kansas City, or last year’s Week 18 meltdown, with a ruthless, wire to wire domination in Cleveland.
Richardson jump started the afternoon with a crisp opening march capped by the first of DK Metcalf’s three touchdowns. From there, the Steelers defense turned the Browns’ afternoon into a nightmare.
On Cleveland’s first snap, defensive tackle Derrick Harmon sacked Shedeur Sanders, the first of seven Pittsburgh sacks on the day. One play later, linebacker Payton Wilson ripped the ball away from David Njoku, setting up another quick Steelers touchdown. After a three and out, Richardson uncorked a 63 yard bomb to Metcalf, pushing the lead to 21–0 before the first quarter had even expired.
Cleveland briefly flickered to life when Njoku broke multiple tackles on a 52 yard catch and run to the end zone. But Pittsburgh smothered the momentum instantly. T.J. Watt blocked the extra point and nearly returned it for two the other way before being dragged down at the two.
“It was a lot of running for nothing,” Watt joked after recording three tackles for loss in the victory.
The Browns threatened late in the half, but Sanders’ attempt at a momentum swinging drive ended when he found Steelers safety DeShon Elliott instead of a receiver. Sanders returned after halftime only long enough to deliver a 23 yard strike to Njoku, who accounted for 100 of Cleveland’s 179 receiving yards, before exiting with an injury. The Browns settled for a field goal on the drive, their final points of the afternoon.
Even Pittsburgh’s mistakes turned golden. Protecting a massive fourth-quarter lead, Richardson scrambled for a first down but lost the ball as he dove forward. Rookie guard Cayden Green scooped it cleanly and rumbled into the end zone for an improbable touchdown to cap the scoring.
“He’s going to be working on late game situational drills this week,” Mike Tomlin deadpanned. “He should’ve just gone down and kept that clock rolling.”
With the win, Pittsburgh closes the regular season at 14–3 and secures the AFC’s No. 1 seed, and a well-earned bye as the 2026 playoffs begin.
