BULLS ON PARADE
USF leans on ground game and defense to move to 11-0, clinch spot in American Championship

Saturday November 11, 2028 | 3:00 PM | Raymond James Stadium | Tampa, Florida | Tampa, Florida

Tampa, Florida - What was billed as a measuring-stick showdown turned into a clinic in control, adaptability, and defense as No. 10 USF methodically dismantled Memphis, 31–6, Saturday afternoon at Raymond James Stadium.

From the opening series, it was clear Memphis arrived with a singular mission: take away Jordyn Bridgewater and Jeremiah Stoneburner, USF's dangerous senior WR duo. The Tigers rolled coverage, bracketed routes, and dared USF to win a different way. The Bulls accepted the challenge and answered with a steady run game, opportunistic defense, and ruthless efficiency in the red zone.

USF struck first late in the opening quarter when Connor Suggs powered in from two yards out, capping an 11-play drive that set the tone physically. From there, the Bulls leaned into balance rather than force-feed their stars. Steven Snead added an 8-yard scoring run early in the second quarter, and quarterback Locklan Hewlett capitalized on short fields created by the defense, tossing red-zone touchdown passes to Gerald Camarda and Lyle Dragos in a decisive four-minute span.

By halftime, USF held a commanding 28–3 lead, having converted all four red-zone trips into touchdowns while Memphis struggled to sustain anything against a disciplined Bulls defense.

That defense became the defining storyline. Memphis quarterback Rashaun Coleman was harassed throughout the afternoon, throwing three interceptions and managing just one third-down conversion on eight attempts. Gavin Jenkins delivered the backbreaker late in the first half, stepping in front of a throw and returning the interception 17 yards to flip momentum yet again. The Tigers finished with just 46 rushing yards and failed to score a touchdown, settling for two long field goals from Derek Tomczak.

USF’s offense slowed in the third quarter after Hewlett suffered an elbow injury midway through the period. The senior briefly exited after taking contact on a throw, returned to finish the quarter, and helped set up Dom Bragg’s 44-yard field goal. With the outcome no longer in doubt, the coaching staff wisely turned the game over to Joshua Brantley in the fourth quarter, allowing Hewlett to rest while preserving rhythm and control.

Though the stat sheet didn’t sparkle through the air (Hewlett finished 19-of-28 for 123 yards) the Bulls never lost command. Snead and Suggs combined for 138 rushing yards, and USF converted 75 percent of its fourth downs, keeping drives alive and draining the clock. Special teams quietly tilted the field as well, with Ethan York racking up 62 punt return yards, repeatedly giving the offense favorable starting position.

In total, USF forced three turnovers, committed just one penalty, and went a perfect 4-for-4 in the red zone, a blueprint win built on patience rather than fireworks.

Memphis may have limited Bridgewater to three catches and kept Stoneburner off the stat sheet entirely, but in doing so, they exposed themselves elsewhere. USF’s willingness to pivot, trust its depth, and let its defense dictate terms turned a hyped matchup into a one-sided statement.

The Bulls didn’t chase style points. They didn’t force the script. They simply imposed it and walked off the field having proven they can win however a game demands.

USF now holds a 97-15 scoring advantage over their last two and a half games.

USF POSTGAME REPORT
USF 31 – Memphis 6
Image

Offense
–USF leaned on patience and balance Saturday afternoon, dispatching Memphis 31–6 at Raymond James Stadium in a game that required adaptability rather than fireworks.
–Memphis sold out defensively to limit Jordyn Bridgewater and Jeremiah Stoneburner, rolling coverage and bracketing routes, forcing the Bulls to adjust their approach early.
–USF responded by committing to the ground game and controlling tempo, finishing with 160 rushing yards and repeatedly winning situational downs.
–Connor Suggs opened the scoring with a two-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter and later led the team with five receptions, punishing Memphis for overcommitting to the perimeter.
–Steven Snead added an eight-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, continuing to provide physicality between the tackles as USF steadily pulled away.
–Quarterback Locklan Hewlett threw two red-zone touchdown passes in the second quarter, connecting with Gerald Camarda and Lyle Dragos to help USF build a 28–3 halftime lead.
–Hewlett suffered an elbow injury in the third quarter and briefly exited before returning to finish the period. With the game firmly in hand, Joshua Brantley took over in the fourth quarter as a precaution.
–USF converted four red-zone trips into touchdowns and went 3-for-4 on fourth down, consistently extending drives and bleeding the clock.
Defense
–USF’s defense delivered another authoritative performance, holding Memphis to just six points and forcing three interceptions in a complete shutdown effort.
–Memphis quarterback Rashaun Coleman threw three interceptions and was under constant pressure, as the Tigers failed to generate consistency on third down, converting just once in eight attempts.
–The Bulls limited Memphis to 46 rushing yards and repeatedly won at the line of scrimmage, eliminating any chance of balance for the Tigers’ offense.
–Gavin Jenkins highlighted the afternoon with an interception return that flipped field position late in the first half, while Kevin Wynn added a sack to cap a disruptive showing up front.
–USF allowed just 10 first downs and never permitted a touchdown, forcing Memphis to settle for two long field goals.
Special Teams
–Dom Bragg connected on a 44-yard field goal in the third quarter after missing from 50+ earlier in the game and was perfect on extra points, continuing a steady season.
–Ethan York provided a spark in the return game, totaling 62 punt return yards and repeatedly setting up favorable field position.
–Punter Donovan McSurdy delivered a booming 62-yard punt in limited action, pinning Memphis deep and complementing the defensive effort.
Quotables
They took away some things we like to do, but that’s when you find out what kind of team you are. We stayed patient and trusted the run game,” – DJ Porter
Defense won this game. When they force turnovers and give us short fields, it changes everything,” – Locklan Hewlett
We didn’t blink. We just kept leaning on them,” – Steven Snead
That’s what a complete team looks like,” – Connor Suggs
News
–USF improved to 10–0 on the season and remained unbeaten in American Conference play.
–The Bulls held an opponent without a touchdown for the second time in two weeks.
–USF extended its winning streak behind a defense that has now forced multiple turnovers in five straight games.
Injury Notes
–Locklan Hewlett sustained an elbow injury in the third quarter but returned briefly before yielding to Joshua Brantley once the game was decided. His status will be monitored this week.
Next Up
–USF wraps up the regular season at ECU (3-7|2-4). They have clinched the top seed in the conference and will host the conference championship game in December.
