Tennessee Titans draft safety Darnell Brazill out of TCU in the second round
The Tennessee Titans added speed and versatility to the back end of their defense Friday night, selecting TCU safety Darnell Brazill with the 26th pick of the second round. Widely viewed as a top-60 prospect, Brazill gives Tennessee a twitchy, athletic defensive back with clear upside although there are some durability questions with Brazill.
Brazill turned heads during the pre-draft process with his movement skills. He clocked a 4.59-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, then improved that time to 4.54 at his pro day, reinforcing the idea that his game speed matches the film. His acceleration shows up most clearly in short areas, highlighted by a 4.16-second 20-yard shuttle, the best mark among safeties in this class.
That short-area quickness translates well on tape. Brazill displays great agility and change of direction, allowing him to stay connected in man coverage and close throwing windows in zone. He accelerates smoothly out of breaks, takes efficient angles to the ball, and has enough burst to recover when slightly out of position. His jumping ability and overall athletic profile make him competitive at the catch point, even against bigger receivers.
A well rounded defensive back, the biggest question mark around Brazill is his medical history, having yet to play a full season at the college level. The lack of top end speed does project him to be a box safety type, perhaps taking on the role of the departed Isaiah Simmons as well as being a big nickel option for the Titans.
