Todd Gurley and Garrison Smith invited to College Football Awards

While several players were nominated as semi-finalists, only two Georgia players have been selected as a finalist and invited to the College Football Awards. This award ceremony will honor the best players in college football the day before the Heisman is handed out in New York City. Two Georgia players, Todd Gurley and Garrison Smith, will attend the College Football Awards.

Sophomore running back Todd Gurley will attend as a finalist for the Doak Walker trophy. Gurley has 1662 yards on 316 carries and 10 touchdowns. The other finalists are Darius Staten of Navy, 1435 yards on 247 rush with 19 touchdowns, and Amir Carlisle of Notre Dame, 1191 yards on 224 carries with 10 touchdowns. Darius Staten is the favorite to win the award.

Senior defensive end Garrison Smith is a finalist for the Lombardi trophy, which is handed out to the best defensive lineman or linebacker in college football. Smith has 28 tackles, 17 tackles for loss and 14 sacks on the year. Eric Braswell from Houston is another finalist with 86 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 8 sacks, 3 forced fumbles and an interception. The favorite is Shawn Underwood from North Carolina. Underwood has 64 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.

Georgia gets one more commitment before recruiting season dies down

As recruiting season dies down Georgia is still in several heated battles. However, one battle has seemed to die down as Malcom Jones committed to the Bulldogs last week. The 6'1" 204 pound cornerback hails from Jacksonville, Florida. He is the #115 CB and ran a 4.54 40 yard dash. Jones isn't expected to make an immediate impact and will need some time to work on his technique before he hits the field.

Controversy as Georgia selected to play in Cotton Bowl
After turning around a poor start Georgia has some serious qualms with the BCS Bowl selections. Georgia is ranked #4 by the BCS system but with the restrictions of teams from a certain conference in BCS bowls they are left on the outside and playing #16 Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl. The at-large teams that got in instead of them were #6 Fresno State, #8 Notre Dame, #10 Florida State, and #3 Alabama. Alabama is really the only team to get in ahead of Georgia that should have gotten in.

There are already talks of there being a 4 team playoff for the championship and this conversation with Georgia might finally push the NCAA to act.

Georgia players receive honors
Georgia failed to have a player win an award this year but that didn't stop them from having several players selected for the All-American and All-SEC teams. Garrison Smith was the only Georgia player selected as a first team All-American. Josh Harvey-Clemons and Amarlo Herrera were the only other Georgia players selected to an All-American team and they were second team All-Americans.

Georgia had several players name to the All-SEC team. On the first team was Todd Gurley, Garrison Smith, Jordan Jenkins, and Amarlo Herrera. Second team All-SEC was Josh Harvey-Clemons, and kicker Marshall Morgan.

Both Georgia and Oklahoma will enter the Cotton Bowl with healthy teams. This means that Georgia will have first team All-American Garrison Smith back. Smith was on the fast track to winning several different awards before an injury sidelined him for the last three games. However, he will be back to play against Oklahoma and look for him to put major pressure on Oklahoma quarterback Blake Bell.
