FROM THIRD STRING TO HERO
Injury Forces Change at Quarterback as Hawaii Rallies Behind Freshman John Tejada
San Marcos, Texas — Hawaii’s game Saturday took a sudden and sobering turn early, when backup quarterback Dermaricus Davis was forced to leave with an injury, but what followed was a poised and impressive response led by true freshman John Tejada.
Davis, who had stepped into the lineup as Hawai‘i’s backup after Heisman contender Micah Alejada injured his back a week ago, went down after absorbing contact on a passing play. He was eventually helped off the field and did not return, leaving the Rainbow Warriors to turn to an untested option under center, their last option.
Enter Tejada.
Thrust into action with little warning, the freshman showed immediate composure. Rather than shrinking in the moment, Tejada settled the offense, completing a quick screen on third down to lead Hawaii to its first touchdown of the afternoon — a catch-and-run score by running back Darrelle Dimke.
From there, Tejada’s confidence only grew. He guided the Warriors making smart reads against pressure, and consistently delivered the ball on time. Hawai‘i leaned on him in critical situations, including multiple third-and-long scenarios, and Tejada answered with accurate throws that extended drives and flipped field position.
The freshman’s calm presence was especially evident as the game wore on. While Texas State struggled with turnovers and stalled drives, Tejada took care of the football, avoiding mistakes and capitalizing when defenses overcommitted. Hawai‘i turned an interception into a quick touchdown and later added points off sustained, methodical drives that kept the Bobcats on their heels.
Even as pressure mounted — the Bobcats’ defense registering several sacks of its own — Tejada remained unfazed. On one second-half scoring play, he stood in the pocket and delivered a beautiful strike in the corner of the end zone to Jackson Harris to put Hawaii up by 28.
By the final whistle, the storyline was clear. While Davis’ injury cast an early shadow over the game, Tejada’s performance transformed it into a statement of depth and preparation for the Rainbow Warriors. The freshman quarterback guided Hawaii with maturity beyond his years, leading the offense up and down the field and helping secure a convincing road victory.
Hawaii will await further word on Davis’ status, but if Saturday was any indication, the Rainbow Warriors may have found something valuable in their young signal-caller.
