Payton Wilson, Alex Highsmith To Be On Snap Counts After Pair Of Injuries In Detroit

Image

Pittsburgh, PA. - Outside of Jalen Ramsey's early-season collarbone break and a trio of nagging injuries along the offensive line, the Pittsburgh Steelers have stayed relatively injury-free as they look to defend their 2026 Super Bowl championship.

That all changed Sunday in Detroit.

Alex Highsmith, Payton Wilson, and Troy Fautanu all missed significant time during the eventual 37-21 victory. While all three avoided serious injuries and are expected to suit up for this week's home matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, head coach Mike Tomlin cautioned that all three would be on "significant" snap counts for the contest.

"These are all injuries that they can play through. Payton, Alex, and Troy are all grinders, and they put their bodies on the line each and every week," Tomlin said in his 21st season as Steelers head coach. "But these are also injuries that if aggravated, could signal long-term problems. We have a singular goal here: championships. By any means necessary. If that means KT, Perk, or B have to get more run in the games, so be it."

Kayvon Thibodeaux, Harold Perkins Jr., and Broderick Jones all came in relief of Highsmith, Wilson, and Fautanu, respectively. While they won't be starting, insiders expect they'll see a large chunk of snaps this weekend.

Pittsburgh, PA. - The Pittsburgh Steelers dismantled the Seattle Seahawks 49-17 at Acrisure Stadium on Sunday to notch their 12th win of the season, but all anyone wanted to talk about afterward was Kenneth Walker III's late-game altercation with Jalen Ramsey — and the Steelers' emphatic response. Walker put the Seahawks on the board late in the third quarter with a 78-yard run. But it was his 54-yard touchdown scamper with just 22 seconds remaining that drew the ire of Pittsburgh's defense.

After scoring to cut the deficit to 42-17, Walker celebrated in the end zone and appeared to direct words at Ramsey. The two exchanged heated words in a tense confrontation before being separated by officials and teammates.

The Steelers got the last laugh.

On the very next play from scrimmage, Anthony Richardson dropped back and launched an 80-yard bomb to DK Metcalf. The veteran receiver mossed Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon at the 5-yard line, added a stiff-arm for good measure, and trotted into the end zone.

Final score: 49-17.

When asked about the altercation after the game, Walker declined to comment. Ramsey, however, did not take the high road.

"He told me to hurry my bitch ass up while he was dancing in the end zone," Ramsey said. "I told him if he wasn't worried about his next TikTok dance, maybe his team wouldn't be grabbing their ankles."

Richardson revealed after the game that he approached Ramsey before taking the field for that final offensive snap.

"I told him, 'I got you five,'" Richardson said, referencing the jersey number Ramsey wears.

Head coach Mike Tomlin wouldn't confirm whether Richardson or offensive coordinator Brian Daboll had approached him about the deep shot, but he brushed off any controversy surrounding the play call.

"They're paid professionals," Tomlin said. "You didn't see us crying about them scoring with 22 seconds left. It wasn't until he got disrespectful that it became a problem. If they don't like us hanging 49 on them, stop us."

Walker's pair of late touchdowns provided the only offensive highlights for a Seattle team that struggled mightily all afternoon. Quarterback Sam Darnold completed just 9 of 22 passes for 76 yards with an interception and also fumbled once — a turnover that was returned for a touchdown by Pittsburgh's TJ Watt.

Outside of Walker's two explosive runs, the Seahawks generated little on the ground or through the air.

Even in a lopsided victory, Pittsburgh had its own turnover issues. Richardson threw an early interception but remained clean afterward. However, both Kaleb Johnson and Keaton Mitchell fumbled in the fourth quarter as the Steelers attempted to grind out the clock.

Pittsburgh will head to M&T Bank Stadium next week to face the 9-3 Baltimore Ravens in a game that will clinch the AFC North crown for the second straight season with a Steelers victory. A win would also complete a season sweep of their bitter rivals and solidify Pittsburgh's hold on the AFC's top seed heading down the stretch.
