3-Star Dual-Threat QB Miles Shuts the Door as Rutgers Opens the Season Strong

Rutgers celebrates a Week 2 victory over Miami (OH), but top QB target Vernon Miles cuts the program from his final three just days after his visit.

PISCATAWAY, NJ -- Week 2 of the college football season delivered a strong showing for Rutgers as the Scarlet Knights secured a win over Miami (OH) in front of a pumped-up home crowd. But while the energy at SHI Stadium was electric, the program may have taken a hit in the recruiting race for one of its top quarterback targets.

Vernon Miles, a 3-star dual-threat signal caller from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Baltimore, visited Piscataway over the weekend to experience Rutgers' game-day atmosphere and meet with head coach Greg Schiano. The 6-foot-3, 173-pound playmaker is ranked among the best in the Northeast for the 2026 class.

“The spread offense really suits my game,” Miles said. “Coach Schiano laid out how I’d fit into their system. The fans were amazing—it felt like real football energy.”

Despite the positive visit, Rutgers didn’t make the final cut. Shortly after his weekend in Jersey, Miles trimmed his list to his top three schools (UNC, Vandy, Maryland), and the Scarlet Knights were left off.

Still, the recruiting cycle is young, and Rutgers remains active in pursuing other standout talents in the 2026 class. With plenty of upside and momentum on the field, the program is far from done making waves this season.

Other Notable Recruiting Targets

Antonio Page, QB
:fourstar:
6'4", 211 lbs Dual-Threat QB from Buffalo, NY — Ranked as the nation's 23rd best quarterback. Rutgers is battling Penn State and NC State for his commitment.

Mohammed Ejiofor, LB
:fourstar:
6'0", 219 lbs LB from Jersey City, NJ — High-motor MIKE linebacker. Ranked 5th in the state and No. 126 overall in the nation.

Jason Konrad, LB
:fourstar:
5'11", 239 lbs LB from Hillsdale, NJ — No. 76 ranked recruit in the nation. Another local MIKE linebacker.

David Okanlawon, LB
:threestar:
6'3", 210 lbs LB from Trenton, NJ — Rangy SAM linebacker with impressive size and speed. Potential gem. Currently has Rutgers ranked first on his list.

Jeremy Grupe, WR
:threestar:
5'6", 160 lbs WR from Bronx, NY — Shifty route artist with gadget-type abilities. Has Rutgers listed ahead of Virginia in a close race.

Willie Mixon, WR
:threestar:
6'5", 194 lbs WR from Red Bank, NJ — Local kid with elite size who attacks the ball at it's highest point. Speed is a concern—may want to think about a switch to tight end.

Amani Wilds, CB
:threestar:
6'2", 181 lbs CB from West Bloomfield, MI — Long cover corner who thrives in press-man schemes. Rutgers remains in his top five.

Davante Madison, OL
:threestar:
6'7", 278 lbs OL from Rochester, NY — Physical exterior lineman with impressive athleticism, especially for his size. Coaches see him as a possible anchor in future trenches.

With momentum building and more visits scheduled this fall, the Scarlet Knights are staying aggressive in building a strong foundation for their 2026 recruiting class.

Really going big game hunting in your initial class. Too bad you didn't make the cut for that QB.

going after the three 4-star kids, but theyre all local and had initial interest. could really use Page (the qb) and one of those LBs. the rest are all 3-star and 2-stars, but again mostly all local who initially had me in their top 3 or 4 during preseason. these are my top 8ish or so tho. the ones who can add some personality to the squad.

Losing Miles won't hurt too bad if you get Page to commit, but that seems like an uphill battle at this point. Like you said, a combo of Page and one of those in-state MIKE LBs would be a great start to recruiting in Piscataway.

Battling the big boys in recruiting early. If you can swing him it'll set up the next few years nicely

i was shocked Miles left me off the list after a win during his visit tbh. Page has been my number 1 target from the jump. think im currently 2nd or 3rd on his list. not sure if ill get another shot at a 4-star qb that has his tools and physical gifts, so im trying to throw everything at him lol

:yep: hoping he can anchor down the offense for the next few years. would allow me to build something around him. can really focus on the transfer window to pull in nice complementary pieces.
