ROJAS EDGES PORTER FOR BROYLES AWARD IN HISTORIC ALL-DELAWARE FINALISTS SHOWDOWN
ONE VOTE SEPARATES HENS ASSISTANTS
Image

In just their second season at the FBS level, the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens made history once again, this time off the field, as defensive coordinator Manny Rojas was awarded the prestigious Broyles Award, honoring the nation’s top assistant coach. Rojas narrowly edged out his colleague and offensive coordinator DJ Porter by a single vote, marking the first time in the award’s history that both top finalists hailed from the same program.

The ceremony, held at the Downtown Rotary Club in Little Rock, Arkansas, saw Rojas take home the solid bronze trophy, which features legendary Arkansas coach Frank Broyles and assistant Wilson Matthews overlooking a game in progress. The moment capped a whirlwind two-day celebration of the five national finalists, but the spotlight was firmly on the Delaware duo whose fingerprints are all over the Blue Hens' 13–0 start and Conference USA title.

“It’s surreal,” said Rojas, holding the 45-pound trophy. “To be up here next to DJ, knowing how much we’ve built together, it doesn’t feel like I ‘won’ something over him. This is a Delaware win. This is for every assistant coach out there grinding tape in the dark and believing in something bigger than themselves.”

Rojas’ defense was nothing short of dominant in 2026. The Blue Hens led the nation in scoring defense and shut down several opponents en route to the C-USA Championship. Known for his aggressive, press-man schemes and creative linebacker blitz packages, Rojas’ group consistently gave Delaware’s offense short fields to work with, and they made the most of it.

Which brings us to Porter.

The former Delaware quarterback-turned-coordinator guided one of the most explosive and balanced offenses in the country. Under his leadership, transfer quarterback Mason Kelsay blossomed into a versatile dual-threat weapon, while the run game flourished behind a physical, well-coached offensive line.

“If someone else had to win it, I’m glad it was my brother,” Porter said with a smile. “I told Manny before we even left for Little Rock, either way, Delaware’s taking that trophy home. We push each other, we challenge each other, and we celebrate each other. That’s the culture Coach Carty built, and we’ve carried it forward.”

The competition was intense, and sources close to the selection committee confirmed the final vote came down to a razor-thin margin, just one tally separating the two Delaware assistants. Committee members include coaching legends like Lou Holtz, Urban Meyer, and Steve Spurrier, alongside prominent broadcast figures such as Maria Taylor and Desmond Howard.

“We’ve never seen anything like this,” said selection committee member Frank Beamer. “To have two assistants from the same Group of Five school as finalists, and then to be that close in voting? That speaks volumes about the job they’ve done in Newark.”

Rojas now joins an elite fraternity of past Broyles winners, 18 of whom have gone on to become head coaches. Whether a promotion lies in his future or not, Rojas isn’t thinking that far ahead.

“Right now, all I care about is helping this team win one more game,” he said. “That’s what matters. Everything else can wait.”

With a playoff battle against Duke looming and national attention firmly on the Blue Hens, the legacy of this season, and this coaching staff, is still being written.

But one thing is certain: no matter how the postseason unfolds, Delaware just made college football history.

Blue Hens Dominate C-USA All-Conference Selections
Delaware puts ten on All-Conference lists
Image

The Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens left no doubt they belong among college football’s elite by claiming a staggering [10 All-Conference USA selections across the First Team, Second Team, and Freshman squads.

Delaware was well represented on the First Team, with QB Mason Kelsay leading the way. The dual-threat earned both First Team and Freshman Team honors. Joining him were key offensive linemen Anthony Caccese, Noah Rosahac, and Jevony Jackson, anchoring one of the nation’s top offensive fronts.

On the outside, Thomas Amankwaa brought veteran leadership and production to the receiving corps, while on defense, DT Francis Brewu and CB Will Kendricks were disruptive forces all season long.

Skyler Sholder also got the nod at kicker, rounding out Delaware's dominant First-Team contingent.

Among the Second-Team honorees were HB Darrion Dupree, who provided balance to Delaware's high-octane offense, LG Josh Janowski, and RE Collins Acheampong, a consistent pass-rushing presence off the edge. LB Collin Gill earned recognition at the WILL linebacker spot with his high football IQ and sideline-to-sideline impact.

Ted Krumholz joined Kelsay on the Freshman All-CUSA team, staking his claim as a future star on the defensive line after an impressive debut campaign.

The future is bright in Newark, and these All-CUSA selections reflect a Delaware program rising faster than anyone could’ve predicted. With a blend of youthful promise and veteran leadership, the Hens squad looks poised to remain a C-USA powerhouse for years to come.
