Atlanta, GA. - The Pittsburgh Steelers are once again alone atop the NFL’s championship mountain. With a 37–3 dismantling of the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl LXI, Pittsburgh claimed its seventh Lombardi Trophy and stepped past the New England Patriots for the most titles in league history.

And in a matchup billed as an offensive showcase between the NFL’s No. 1 and No. 3 scoring offenses, the newly crowned MVP in Anthony Richardson, and two creative play-callers, it was the Steelers’ defense that seized the spotlight. Led by Super Bowl MVP T.J. Watt, who turned in two sacks, a forced fumble, and one of the most memorable defensive touchdowns in recent championship history, Pittsburgh held Green Bay without a touchdown and under 150 total yards.

The night began with the Steelers threatening to blow the roof off the place early. Richardson sliced through the Packers’ secondary on the opening drive, but three straight incompletions stalled the early surge and forced a field goal. That initial spark, however, quickly reignited. Pittsburgh forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and took over at the Green Bay 7-yard line, setting up an opportunity to take immediate command.

Instead, the first big twist arrived. Facing 4th-and-1 at the goal line, Pittsburgh spread out and dialed up a pass. Richardson barely took a step before NFC Defensive Player of the Year Rashan Gary vaulted over guard Mason McCormick and swallowed the quarterback for a momentum swinging sack.

But that momentum didn’t last long. Jordan Love and the Packers offense went three-and-out in what would become an alarming pattern, gifting Pittsburgh another short field. The Steelers added another field goal, then finally cracked the end zone midway through the second quarter when Kaleb Johnson darted in from seven yards out — the first of his three touchdowns on the night.

Green Bay briefly steadied itself before halftime, piecing together its most functional drive of the evening behind clutch grabs from Markus Golden and Jayden Reed. But as the Packers pushed into scoring position, a deep shot to Romeo Doubs was expertly broken up by veteran corner Jalen Ramsey, forcing a 42-yard field goal. It would be the Packers’ only points of the night.

Down 13–3 at the break, Matt LaFleur expressed belief in his team’s ability to claw back. “We’ve held the MVP without a real impact play,” he said. “If we come out with energy and chip away, we’ll be in it.”

But the hope lasted exactly one snap.

TJ Watt detonated Green Bay’s first play of the second half, bull rushing Zach Tom and crushing Love from his blind side. The ball popped loose, and Watt scooped it up, raced into the end zone, rocked the baby, then stunned everyone in Mercedes-Benz Stadium by unleashing a cartwheel into a backflip.

“I didn’t know he could move like that at his age,” linebacker Payton Wilson said, laughing afterward. “I still don’t believe it even though I saw it.”

The play broke whatever remained of Green Bay’s resolve. The Packers managed just 65 yards the rest of the way as Pittsburgh’s defense squeezed the life out of every snap.

Richardson didn’t need to be Superman, and Johnson’s continued dominance, tying a Super Bowl record with three rushing touchdowns, gave Pittsburgh a cushion most quarterbacks dream of. Yet the moment belonged to the defense, to Watt, and ultimately, to the coach who’d been waiting 15 long years for this final piece of redemption.

“It may be different coaches, different players,” Mike Tomlin said on the podium, Lombardi in hand, “but it’s the same organization that kept us from claiming #7 fifteen years ago. Payback is a bitch.”

The victory punctuated one of the most cathartic seasons in franchise history. The Steelers snapped a postseason drought dating back to 2017, shed the national narrative that Tomlin could no longer win in January, and marched through the AFC with a revived swagger anchored by a quarterback who had once been an afterthought in Indianapolis.

As confetti drifted down from the rafters, Tomlin and Richardson found each other amid the chaos, a brief embrace between two men who had reshaped each other’s careers.

For Richardson, the weight of the moment hit immediately. “It was just clarity,” he said. “He took a chance on me when I didn’t know what my future was. And in return… maybe I helped turn the narrative around for him, too. He went from people saying he’d been stuck in neutral to winning his second Super Bowl.”

Then he smiled.

“Now it’s about stacking trophies. Because I sure as hell ain’t done and I doubt Coach T is either.”
