Huskies move Ioannidis ahead of trade deadline, Godwin and Awuzie stay put after team entertains offers

The Toronto Huskies have traded away defensive end Matthew Ioannidis and two 2025 fifth round picks to the Chicago Bears for their 2025 first round pick.

Ioannidis, who is set to become a free agent in 2026, was the second longest tenured Toronto Husky on the roster and one of the few remaining players from the 2019 Washington Redskins roster. Punter Tress Way is now the last remaining player on the roster that was on the 2019 team.

Ioannidis wasn't the only Husky on the trade block. The team reportedly was in the midst of working on a deal to send potentially receiver Chris Godwin and corner Chidobe Awuzie to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for Jalen Ramsey but the Rams declined the trade. Another deal was also in the work for New England Patriot cornerback Stephon Gilmore but his injury and being unable to complete a physical killed the deal.

Replacing Ioannidis on the starting lineup will be rookie defensive end Greg O'Neal who has three sacks on the season. The former second overall pick has shown some flashes this season, drawing comparisons to Aaron Donald during the pre-draft process. Toronto also signed free agent defensive end Willis Powers to replace Ioannidis' roster spot.

Moore, Huskies agree on four year extension to keep former first round in Toronto

The Toronto Huskies and wide receiver Rondale Moore have agreed to a four year extension that is worth up to $50 million.

The deal comes weeks after the team re-signed quarterback Trevor Lawrence and also re-signed defensive end Chase Young earlier in the draft. The franchise views those three players, not wide receiver Chris Godwin, as the three franchise cornerstones.

The deal is friendly for both sides with $31 million of the $50 million being guaranteed but even at the peak of his deal, Moore's cap hit never goes over $13.6 million which is in 2028. This gives Toronto some flexibility and opens the door for the possibility of Godwin being on the roster next season.

The next player likely up for a new contract is linebacker Nolan Garrison, who is putting together a career season with nine sacks on the season already. The team has around $65 million in cap left to either re-sign Godwin, cornerback Chidobe Awuzie, safety Jalen Thompson and the aforementioned Garrison as they are the remaining starters that are set to be free agents. With corners Donovan Bigby and Ashley Konrad as well as offensive linemen Dominique Vernon and Drew Mackey set to be on their final year next season, Toronto will be prudent with their cap.

Bye Week Report: Super Bowl no longer speculation, expectation for Toronto

The Toronto Huskies are 7-1 with the second best record in the NFC and will get a chance coming out of the bye to face the Dallas Cowboys and start to create some separation between them and the 5-2 Dallas Cowboys. This great start and the improved defense has brought the expectations higher with the team now fully prepared for a run at the Lombardi.

Team MVP

This award will be shared between quarterback Trevor Lawrence and defensive end Chase Young. Lawrence leads the NFL in passing yards and is third in touchdowns. If it wasn't for his bit of an interception problem this season -- 8 in 8 games -- he'll have the award all to himself. Young hasn't been a slouch either, leading the league once more with fourteen sacks.

Best Unit

Toronto's front four -- and sometimes front five -- has been elite this season. Toronto has the 2nd best scoring defense in the league and lead the league in sacks with a ten sack difference between them and the second place team. The loss of Matthew Ioannidis will be felt, 4.5 sacks on 480 snaps, but his replacement is something to watch. In just 108 snaps, rookie defensive end Greg O'Neal has three sacks.

The increased workload could come with increased production for O'Neal but it starts and ends with the combination of Chase Young and Nolan Garrison, who are 1 and 2 in the league in sacks.

Surprise Player

WR Richard Leonard spent his rookie season routinely getting hurt and not being able to get on the field when he wasn't hurt. Leonard now has multiple games this season where he surpassed his nine catch total from 2023 and he finds himself leading the team with sixty catches for 712 yards and three touchdowns. He doesn't have the big play ability, yet, of Rondale Moore or even Chris Godwin but he's been a welcome addition to the receiving corps.

Most Disappointing Player

Chris Godwin is having a good season with eighteen catches for 368 yards and four touchdowns but good isn't what Godwin has been in his tenure in Toronto. He picked a bad year to have a down season with his contract due and Godwin looking for another big pay day. Toronto's been hesitant to bite and his production is showing why.

Player to Watch for Second Half of Season

It's been hinted at before but defensive end Greg O'Neal could see a huge spike in terms of production. Toronto has hit it big on a few second day players such as Nolan Garrison (third round), Richard Leonard (3rd round) and Donovan Bigby (2nd round). Could O'Neal be that next guy in line?

Biggest Weakness

Carolina showed that Toronto's defense still has ways to go when it comes to stopping mobile quarterbacks. Dallas has the top offense in the league with a mobile quarterback in Dak Prescott and the second best offense in the NFC, outside of Toronto, is New Orleans and mobile QB Justin Fields. You move to the AFC and you have Baltimore's Lamar Jackson.
