Packers block kick, return it for a touchdown and then make goal-line interception to advance to Super Bowl
January 20th, 2024 -- ManuLife Financial Field (Toronto, ON)
Green Bay Packers (12-6) at Toronto Huskies (14-3)
---------------------------
GB - 3 / 17 / 0 / 14 // 34
TOR - 7 / 10 / 7 / 3 // 27
---------------------------
Despite the best efforts of its future Hall of Fame quarterback, Green Bay appeared to be dead in the water as Chris Godwin's 16-yard catch put Toronto on the 10-yard line with two minutes left in the game and already up one point.
Chris Sanders' scoop and score from the ensuing blocked field goal would spring Green Bay out of the water and into the Super Bowl with a 34-27 win over the Huskies on Sunday night.
Tress Way bobbled the snap, allowing D.J. Reed Jr. to get around the edge and block the field goal which was picked up by Sanders and returned for a touchdown.
The two-point conversion gave them the seven point lead but they weren't out of the danger yet. Trevor Lawrence connected with Godwin for a gain of fifteen on the first play and two plays later, it went to Miles Boykin for a 35-yard gain to get it on the Green Bay 26-yard line with 1:03 left in the game.
Green Bay forced a fourth down but on fourth and six, Lawrence went back to Godwin on a deep in route for a 14-yard gain. Lawrence went to the well once too many as Jordan Fuller stepped in front of his intended pass to Godwin.
Godwin appeared to have been pull by Jaire Alexander but a flag wasn't called.

]Inside the Front Office with Assistant GM Stephon White
Salary Cap: $227M
Salaries: $138M
Penalties: $180K
Cap Space: $89.3M
Rookie Reserve: $10.7M
Quarterback
Under Contract: Trevor Lawrence [90 Ovr, $8.24M cap hit]
Expiring: Joshua Dobbs [65 Ovr]
Top FA Available: Jalen Hurts [71 Ovr] | Jake Fromm [70 Ovr] | Aaron Rodgers [69 Ovr] | Matthew Stafford [68 Ovr]
White's notes: The retirement of Cam Newton creates a need at the position, preferably drafting a development project as well as a veteran to backup Lawrence.
Running back
Under Contract: Angel McBride [83 Ovr, $2.8M] | Sherwin Florence [73 Ovr, $760k] | Kyree Sampson [69 Ovr, $1.1M]
Expiring: Travis Homer [67 Ovr] | Cade Carney [71 Ovr]
Top FA Available: Jonathan Taylor [81 Ovr] | De'Andre Swift [80 Ovr] | Zach Moss [78 Ovr] | Jordan Howard [78 Ovr] | J.K. Dobbins [78 Ovr]
White's notes: McBride provides some star power while Florence and Sampson provide some stability as both a goal-line option and receiving back, respectively. This position has been addressed in the past two draft classes, bringing back Carney is an option. Likely to only carry four running backs next season.
Wide receiver
Under Contract: Chris Godwin [93 Ovr, $16.3M] | Rondale Moore [83 Ovr, $3.17M] | Miles Boykin [77 Ovr, $4.63M] | Andy Isabella [76 Ovr, $2.06M] | Braxton Berrios [73 Ovr, $3.17M] | Richard Leonard [69 Ovr, $990k]
Expiring: Tyler Adams [66 Ovr]
Top FA Available: Auden Tate [80 Ovr] | K.J. Hamler [79 Ovr] | Robby Anderson [77 Ovr] | Justin Jefferson [77 Ovr] | Steven Sims [76 Ovr]
White's notes: Boykin was serviceable but still not a viable replacement for McLaurin. Moore and Godwin set to expire next season and therefore need to be mindful with spending at position. Berrios and Isabella, ideally, will be traded as neither lived up to their $2M+ cap hit from last season.
Tight end
Under Contract: Brycen Hopkins [74 Ovr, $3.82M] | Shawn Starr [74 Ovr, $810k]
Expiring: David Wells [69 Ovr]
Top FA Available: Austin Seferian-Jenkins [76 Ovr] | Hunter Bryant [75 Ovr] | Foster Moreau [74 Ovr]
White's notes: The perfect one-two punch in Hopkins, a versatile threat, and Starr, an in-line blocker. Position in no need to be addressed outside of depth.
Offensive Line
Under Contract: T Dominique Vernon [84 Ovr, $5.68M] | G Netane Muti [80 Ovr, $5.96M] | G/T Drew Mackey [81 Ovr,$3.54M] | G Cole Allman [66 Ovr, $680k] | T Zach Olson [63 Ovr, $260]
Expiring: T Mitchell Schwartz [81 Ovr] | C J.C. Tretter [76 Ovr] | T Isaiah Prince [67 Ovr] | G Josh Knipfel [70 Ovr]
Top FA Available: G David Decastro [86 Ovr] | C Ryan Jensen [79 Ovr] | T Taylor Lewan [78 Ovr] | T Jake Matthews [76 Ovr] | G Calvin Throckmorton [75 Ovr]
White's notes: Schwartz surprised many by returning for another season but the veteran tackle is getting up there in age. The plan is to kick out Mackey to tackle from guard, maybe even left tackle, and draft a replacement for Schwartz in tackle-rich draft. Ideally, also replace Tretter.
Defensive Line
Under Contract: DE Matthew Ioannidis [85 Ovr, $12.4M] | DT Da'Ron Payne [86 Ovr, $8.21M] | DE Charles Bell [70 Ovr, $780k] | DT Stewart Roberts [69 Ovr, $410k] | DE Willis Power [69 Ovr, $980k] | DE Joe Jackson [67 Ovr, $940k]
Expiring: DE Chase Young [94 Ovr] | DE Christian Wilkins [77 Ovr] | DT Dontari Poe [66 Ovr]
Top FA Available: DE Frank Clark [80 Ovr] | DE Dee Ford [79 Ovr] | DE Shaq Lawson [77 Ovr]
White's notes: Young getting classified as a defensive end will raise his tag price to $20M, a steep price which will only get steeper once the extension is signed. There are talks of a potential hold out but remains to be seen. Team played well when Young was at three-technique instead of OLB, will continue to do so which fills the void for three-technique opposite of Ioannidis. Wilkins price tag too high for his production.
Linebacker
Under Contract: OLB Nolan Garrison [79 Ovr, $900k] | ILB Cole Holcomb [78 Ovr, $7.31M] | OLB Montez Sweat [80 Ovr, $9.43 M] | ILB Josh Harris [67 Ovr, $350k] | ILB Michael Pinckney [66 Ovr, $870k]
Expiring: Dont'a Hightower [75 Ovr] | Reuben Foster [75 Ovr] | Trent Harris [64 Ovr]
Top FA Available: OLB Khalid Kareem [79 Ovr] | OLB Terrell Lewis [78 Ovr] | OLB Kyle Van Noy [78 Ovr]
White's notes: Foster, 30, is far from the player he once was and Holcomb is leaning that way as well, especially with that price tag. Sweat also likely to be moved, given his high cap hit in 2024.
Secondary
Under Contract: CB Ashley Konrad [87 Ovr, $2.88M] | S Jalen Thompson [78 Ovr, $3.03M] | CB Donovan Bigby [77 Ovr, $1.54M] | S Charlie Pelfrey [72 Ovr, $2.68M] | S Javelin Guidry [72 Ovr, $850k] | S Jeremy Saxton [71 Ovr, $670k] | S Troy Apke [70 Ovr, $730k]
Expiring: CB Chidobe Awuzie [84 Ovr] | CB Patrick Peterson [71 Ovr] | CB Josiah Scott [69 Ovr]
Top FA Available: CB Cameron Dantzler [78 Ovr] | S J.R. Reed [78 Ovr] | S Antoine Brooks Jr. [77 Ovr] | CB Tavon Young [77 Ovr]
White's notes: Would like to bring Awuzie back, best defensive lineup was nickel look with Konrad, Bigby and Awuzie once he was healthy. This will depend on price as well as FA class. Likely to draft another corner even if Awuzie re-signed given his age, 29. Neal a potential mover as well due to $12.5 million cap hit.
Special Teams
Under Contract: K Aldrick Rosas [82 Ovr, $4.59M]
Expiring: P Tress Way [80 Ovr]
White's notes: Championship game blunder aside, it might be time to move on from Rosas and Way. Both all-pro at position, price getting up there and they might be nearing their cliff.
