RULING THE ROOST
Delaware holds on to top Coastal Carolina in home opener

Thursday September 3, 2026 | Delaware Stadium – Newark, Delaware | 7:30 PM

Newark, Delaware - Delaware cornerback Will Kendricks celebrated emphatically after knocking down a fourth down pass that Coastal Carolina quarterback Roquan Barber intended for wide receiver Ja'Marion Wayne with under two minutes to play in the game. Delaware's defense was tasked with protecting a four point lead on the late possession. Kendricks was able to jump with Wayne and break up the pass despite a height disadvantage.

“Just a heads up play at a time when we really needed one.” Defensive coordinator Manny Rojas said when asked about the play.

Delaware's offense was able to run out the clock and secure the win, improving their record to 2-0 to start the season.

The Blue Hens were able to lean on their running game, amassing 223 yards on the ground. Darrion Dupree, who struggled against Virginia last week, led the team with 97 yards on 21 carries. Luke Brown chipped in 71 yards and a score while QB Mason Kelsay ran for 55 yards on the day, including a 19 yard touchdown run in the third quarter that came on a third and long.

Kelsay threw for 211 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 20 of 27 passing. He was picked off twice.

“He's young and he's out there trying to make plays and, you know, as you mature as a player and as a quarterback you learn when to cut your losses and that's still something we're working on.” Offensive coordinator DJ Porter explained when asked about the turnovers. “We'll get that worked out and Mason's going to keep making plays for us.”

Kelsay's favorite target was once again senior receiver Thomas Amankwaa, who caught a team high seven passes for 80 yards and a score. Amankwaa's second quarter touchdown pass put the Hens up 7-0.

After Coastal Carolina answered that score with a 27 yard touchdown pass from Barber to Yakery Wiedner it was backup tight end/receiver Garrison Shead who was on the receiving end of Kelsay's second touchdown pass, scoring from 13 yards out on a crossing route.

“If you're open he's going to give you a chance to make a play.” Shead said of the connection.

Coastal Carolina added a field goal late in the first half then took the lead midway in the third quarter when Barber found Jeremiah Cobb for an 11 yard score. Kelsay's third down touchdown run put the Hens back on top at the end of the third quarter.

Scottre Humphrey's one yard run put the Chants back on top early in the fourth quarter before Luke Brown put Delaware back on top for good with a 20 yard touchdown run at the three minute mark.

Delaware's defense held Barber to just 150 yards passing but ave up a pair of touchdown passes. Runningback Jeremiah Cobb ran for 128 yards against the Hens' defense. Cobb also caught a pair of passes for 16 yards and a score.

“A couple things we'll need to look at the tape and see what we need to work on.” Rojas commented. “We gave up a couple runs of 20 plus yards so obviously we want to get that fixed. If you take those away the numbers start to look a bit better.”

Delaware will head to Tennessee to face Vanderbilt next week.

BLUE HEN REPORT
News and notes from Delaware's latest game
Delaware 28 – Coastal Carolina 24

Trending Up
RB Darrion Dupree | Dupree struggled against Virginia but put up nearly 100 yards against Coastal.
RB Luke Brown | Brown contributed a bit lass in the passing game this week but still contributed 86 total yards and found the endzone again.
WR Thomas Amankwaa | Led the team in receptions and yards again and hauled in a great deep ball touchdown.
OLB Collin Gill | Recorded five tackles, including one for loss, and a sack.
K Skyler Sholder | Expected to be a weak spot for the Hens this offseason, Sholder has made all of his kicks thus far.
Trending Down
WR Yannick Smith | Improved on the drops with only one this game. Caught four passes but for only 26 yards. Not seeing the speed and explosiveness we had expected from him so far.
OLB Julius Puryear | With just one tackle in this game and three so far this season we have not seen Puryear be the defensive force that the coaching staff felt he would be, though he has played just 38 snaps. Gill, a converted safety, has out-shined him at the position.
Quotables
OC DJ Porter | “He's young and he's out there trying to make plays and, you know, as you mature as a player and as a quarterback you learn when to cut your losses and that's still something we're working on.” Offensive coordinator DJ Porter explained when asked about QB Mason Kelsay's interceptions. “We'll get that worked out and Mason's going to keep making plays for us.”
Injury Notes
CB Kahlil Ali | Ali left the game against Coastal Carolina with a shoulder injury. It has now been determined that the injury is a broken collarbone. Ali is expected to miss 6-10 weeks. Depth at CB is decent, Kshawn Cox Jr and Nyair Domnie are expected to fill in behind Hasson Manning Jr and Will Kendricks.
The Offensive Line | Several members of the OL missed time in the win over Coastal. All of them have been cleared medically and the starters are expected to be available for the next game.
Next Up
Delaware (2-0) travels to face Vanderbilt (1-0).

Coach Porter's Notes
A tough SEC opponent on the road, we will need to play mistake free football in this one.
Good players at all three levels on this defense.
Defensive line is pretty solid across the board. No game breakers. Weakness is the right end.
Linebackers are solid as well. Mike and Will are fast.
Secondary is the strength of the defense with two above average corners and a good box safety. Free safety is the weakness in this unit.
Overall this is one of the better defenses we will see and despite being one of the lower teams in the SEC they still have that SEC talent sprinkled across the roster.

BUSINESS TRIP
Delaware takes down Vandy on the road despite offensive struggles

Saturday September 12, 2026 | FirstBank Stadium – Nashville, Tennessee | 12:00 PM

Nashville, Tennessee - “Definitely not our finest performance.” Delaware offensive coordinator DJ Porter said after Delaware's 23-10 win over Vanderbilt.

“When you go into hostile territory in SEC country and come away with a win you've got to feel good about it.” Porter continued. “But it's not going to be a great film review session for us.”

Delaware's offense struggled on third and fourth downs, converting just 5 of 18 third down attempts and 3 out of 9 on fourth down.

“We kept getting ourselves in those third and longs, not getting the push we need up front, and those guys knew we had to throw and just pinned their ears back and forced us to get the ball out early.”

Fortunately for the Hens their defense played lights out, holding the Commodores to under 100 yards of total offense and taking the ball away three times.

Vanderbilt's third down performance was even worse as they were only able to convert on 3 out of 13 attempts. They failed on their only fourth down attempt.

Delaware cashed in on their first possession when Mason Kelsay connected with Nick Tyree for a six yard touchdown.

The Hens held a 7-0 lead until Vanderbilt's AJ Newberry ran in for a score from two yards out late in the second quarter. They would go up 10-7 when Brock Taylor hit a 51 yard field goal before halftime.

Delaware tied the game up with three minutes left in the third quarter when Skyler Sholder hit a 47 yard field goal.

Darrion Dupree's one yard TD run early in the fourth quarter gave Delaware the lead for good and Sholder added two more field goals for insurance, securing a 23-10 win.

Kelsay threw for 167 yards on 20 of 32 passing with a touchdown and an interception, he led the team with 62 yards rushing on six attempts.

Dupree ran for 61 yards and a score on 19 carries while Luke Brown picked up 33 yards on 12 carries.

Top receivers were Thomas Amankwaa with 59 yards on five receptions and Yannick Smith who caught four passes for 37 yards.

Nate Spak and Francis Brewu led the team with five tackles each. Brewu recorded 2 sacks. Dom Philbin picked off a pair of passes and Will Kendricks picked one off as well.

Vanderbilt QB Holden Geriner threw for just 77 yards on 9 of 32 passing and was picked off three times. Newberry ran for 29 yards but Geriner lost 19, giving Vandy a net of just ten yards on the ground.

BLUE HEN REPORT
News and notes from Delaware's latest game
Delaware 23 – Vanderbilt 10

Trending Up
QB Mason Kelsay's Legs | Kelsay set the tone with a 37 yard run early against Vanderbilt, helping to set up Delaware's first possession score. If Kelsay can be a consistent runner that will help open things up for the Hen's offense.
WR Thomas Amankwaa | Hard to say Amankwaa is still trending up since he is clearly the team's top receiver after leading the team in receptions and yards in each of the first three games. “He just knows how to get open and when he's targeted he always seems to come down with it.” OC DJ Porter said when asked about him.
CB Will Kendricks | Kendricks moved into the starting lineup and responded with four tackles, an interception and a pair of PBUs.
FS Dom Philbin | With CB Kahlil Ali out Philbin saw an uptick in playing time against Vanderbilt and he made the most of it, picking off two passes in the win.
Trending Down
TEs Jake Bredell and Riley Williams | There was a lot of hype around the position during the offseason with Williams and Bredell expected to make TE a strength for the team. So far they have only combined for six receptions for 59 yards, 32 of which came on Bredell's lone reception.
Quotables
OC DJ Porter | “We kept getting ourselves in those third and longs, not getting the push we need up front, and those guys knew we had to throw and just pinned their ears back and forced us to get the ball out early.”
Injury Notes
QB Mason Kelsay | Kelsay was injured at one point against Vanderbilt but returned. He was removed late when the game was in hand. The coaching staff did not elaborate on the injury but said he is 100% and will start against Middle Tennessee.
News
CB Will Kendricks | Kendricks was named the CUSA Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the win over Vanderbilt.
Next Up
Delaware (3-0) plays at Middle Tennessee (2-0). They will spend the week in Tennessee, practicing at a nearby high school facility.
