Delaware overcomes late turnover, Sholder's kick secures the win

Saturday August 29, 2026 | Scott Stadium – Charlottesville, Virginia | 12:00 PM

Charlotesville, Virginia - Delaware offensive coordinator DJ Porter could be seen on the sideline encouraging quarterback Mason Kelsay to keep his head up after a late interception gave Virginia tech the ball back with under two minutes left in a 17-17 game.

“I just felt like we would get a chance and we needed Mason to be ready to deliver. We did get the ball back and Mason got it done for us.”

Delaware's defense held strong and forced a Virginia three and out. Kelsay then completed passes of 23 and 12 yards to Luke Brown and Ja'Carree Kelly to set up Skyler Sholder's 27 yard field goal, which split the uprights.

Kelsay battled a strong pass rush and a number of dropped passes on the day, completing 28 of 44 pass attempts for 257 yards along with a touchdown and an interception.

“We've got to do better up front and we've got to secure those catchable balls.” Porter said when talking about the offensive performance.

Senior Thomas Amankwaa, who's strong spring and fall camp performances earned him a starting role, led the team with 105 yards on 11 receptions. He also secured a touchdown on a diving catch in the third quarter.

Darrion Dupree ran for 49 yards on 13 attempts and Luke Brown, the sophmore wide receiver turned runningback, ran eight times for 40 yards while also catching five passes for 56 yards. Dupree struggled to find space to run for much of the game, picking up 20 of his 49 yards on the game's final drive. He also lost a fumble.

Virginia's last second heave down the sideline was batted down by Kahlil Ali, securing the Hens' win.

KT Seay led the team with nine tackles and assisted Collins Acheampong with a sack. Acheampong finished with four tackles, 1.5 sacks and two tackles for loss. Linebacker Collin Gill forced and recovered a pair of fumbles.

Coach Porter's Notes
One of our main goals for this game will be to get the running game going. We're not looking to be slinging the ball 40 plus times like we did last week.
Their defensive line is vulnerable so we will need our guys up front to set the tone and make holes I could run through.
They have some solid inside linebackers so we will need to make sure we're getting to that second level and getting a hat on those guys.
Decent corners, including a former NC State guy, safeties don't worry me too much.
