did you figure out how you were going to manage the goat sim defense, or just make it extremely difficult for you offensively again? Cause depending on that will change how the season will go. Another 11 win season is def do-able but not if you've got to overcompensate the offensive difficult.
I don't want to make my offense as bad as it was at the end of the last season so I will try to find ways to handicap the defense some when it's appropriate. aside from that we're just going to say Manny Rojas is the goat DC

SPRING FOOTBALL SERIES – WEEK ONE - OFFENSE

In part one of a four part series I have attended the first week of spring football and made some observations on the offensive side of the ball. Next week I will do the same for the defensive side of the ball. In week three I will cover special teams and any other noteworthy developments before wrapping the series with coverage of the annual blue and white game.
KELSAY AND BROWN BATTLING FOR QB1 SPOT
As expected coming into spring ball the top two quarterbacks have been transfer Mason Kelsay and senior Blake Brown. Brown has shown a bit more velocity on his passes and seems to be able to put more touch on deep passes. Kelsay shines whenever athleticism is called upon. Kelsay's accuracy shortcomings are less apparent on medium throws while he does miss a few shorter timing routes that Brown does not.
“They each bring a bit different style to the table.” Offensive coordinator DJ Porter said when asked about the battle. “We're not in a rush to name a starter. We're going to let this play out for as long as we need to make a decision.”
Behind Kelsay and Blake the rest of the position group, which is made up of sophomore Tre Lloyd and freshmen Larry Azur and Alfonso Arora, it has been more of the same with each of the three bringing different skill sets.
LUKE BROWN HAS APPARENTLY MOVED FROM WR TO HB
Luke Brown, a redshirt sophomore who was listed on the roster as a wide receiver last season, has been working exclusively with the runningbacks so far. He has been getting a good number of reps along with transfer Darrion Dupree and returning players Daniel McConomy and Oliver Redd. Brown shifts over from a crowded WR room to a RB room with question marks surrounding depth. Brown has shown a good burst and the best hands of the group but he did fumble once in a live drill.
THE OFFENSIVE LINE HAS BEEN A WORK IN PROGRESS
The Hens will roll out an entirely different starting offensive line from who they had in 2025. With 11 new players coming in via high school recruiting and the transfer portal DJ Porter and Offensive Line coach Chris Rogers have been getting a look at multiple players in several different positions. One move that seems to have stuck so far is Sam Secrest, a transfer who most recently played at Louisville, has been working primarily with the tackles despite taking most of his snaps at center and guard last season. Secrest is listed at 6'6” and does seem to do well in pass blocking reps.
RILEY WILLIAMS AND JAKE BREDELL SPLITTING TE REPS, SHEAD WORKING WITH GROUP
Incoming transfer TE Riley Williams and returning part time starter Jake Bredell have received a nearly even number of snaps at tight end so far in camp. Bredell looks to worked on his hands and agility while the 277 pound Williams moves exceptionally well for his size. Bredell, who has switched from #81 to #18, does seem to have a bit more burst off the line than Williams.
JUCO transfer Garrison Shead, recruited as a WR, has been with the TE group all week. He is on par as far as height goes but the size difference between him and even Bredell, who is listed as the lightest TE on the roster at 242 pounds, is extremely noticable.

SPRING FOOTBALL SERIES – WEEK TWO - DEFENSE

In part two of a four part series I have attended the first two weeks of spring football and made some observations on the defensive side of the ball. In week three I will cover special teams and any other noteworthy developments before wrapping the series with coverage of the annual blue and white game.
CB1 APPEARS TO BE HASSON MANNING JR
With 2025's top CB Keontae Jenkins graduating after last season the pressure was on to find his replacement early in camp. Enter Hasson Manning Jr. Manning, who was a starter at safety last year, was all for the move.
“We had a lot of talent on the back end (at safety) and they was talking about maybe making some moves to try to keep me and Kingsley (Royal) and KT (Seay) all on the field and get Collin (Gill) in the mix too. I just told 'em like whatever you need me to do I'm down.”
Manning has settled into the new role nicely, clearly much more comfortable there after a couple weeks of adjustment.
Opposite Manning it has been a mix of Kahlil Ali and transfer Will Kendricks. Kshawn Cox, Nyair Domnie and Azir Lee all figure into the rotation as well.
JENKINS AND BREWU ARE TOUGH
Two key incoming transfers for the defense are defensive tackles Bryce Jenkins and Francis Brewu. Both have proven to be a challenge for the offensive line, making it difficult to open up space in the middle for the run game. Jenkins, listed at 317 pounds, has regularly stonewalled interior offensive linesmen while still fighting to make contact with runningbacks. Brewu, while not quite as much of an immovable object, has shown a quick first step and the ability to fight through blocks.
“We always say it starts up front and with those two in the middle it's really going to free up the linebackers to go do what they need to do and hopefully set us up with some nice third and long situations by stuffing the run game.” Defensive line coach Kyre Hawkins said when we chatted after Tuesday's practice.
THE LINEBACKERS HAVE BEEN MOVED AROUND SIGNIFICANTLY
While it's safe to say nothing has been set in stone as far as a depth chart goes it does appear that Manny Rojas and Rocco DiMeco have been busy adjusting positions for the linebackers. Sophomore Julius Puryear, one of the returning players at the position, has been taking most of his reps at SAM. Last season he played the WILL position on 87% of his snaps. Gavin Moul returns as the top MIKE linebacker and he has been joined by sophomores Colin Gallagher and Alexander Cobbs. After bouncing around a bit early it appears that freshman Phil East has also settled in at MIKE. At WILL there has been a bit of a surprise with transfer Collin Gill, previously a safety at Charlotte, taking a number of reps at the position. Meikhi Cuttino and Mekhi Carmon have worked there as well.
“We talked all offseason about getting these talented safeties on the field as much as possible.” Explained Head Coach Tony Sanchez when I asked about the moves for Gill and Manning Jr. “It was actually Coach Porter's idea to start getting those guys some reps at different positions early on here and seeing what would stick. It's been a good move so far and they're picking up the nuances of the new positions pretty quickly.”
SAFETY IS STILL A POSITION OF STRENGTH
Despite Hasson Manning and Collin Gill moving to other positions the cupboard is far from bare on the back end. Kingsley Royal and KT Seay are the projected starters with Seay expected to play closer to the line of scrimmage while Royal handles centerfield. Behind them is a more than capable group with seniors Dillon Worley and Nate Spak looking much improved from last season. Underclassmen AJ Graham and Alex Adebayo could both be contributors as well. Hawaii transfer Dom Philbin has also seen meaningful reps with the group.

SPRING FOOTBALL SERIES – WEEK THREE – SPECIAL TEAMS AND SPRING PRACTICE WRAP-UP

In part three of a four part series I have assembled some notes about special teams and a few other developments after attending three weeks of Delaware's spring practice. Next week I will be wrapping up the series with coverage of the annual blue and white game.
WR THOMAS AMANKWAA HAS EARNED HIMSELF A STARTING POSITION
Thomas Amankwaa, a senior wide receiver who did not appear in a game in 2025, has shot up the depth chart during spring practice, all but cementing himself as one of the three starting receivers. Amankwaa has displayed great hands, arguably the best on the team, and the ability to win contested catches. Listed at 212 pounds he is one of the stronger receivers on the roster and his route running is among the best on the team.
“It's very clear that Thomas has worked extremely hard in the offseason and he has made great strides both in his route running and his catching abilities. At this point I wouldn't hesitate to say he is one of our top receivers and we are all extremely proud of the improvement he has shown and we're excited to see him be a contributor this season.” Passing game coordinator Sean Goldrich said of Amankwaa.
KICKER SKYLER SHOLDER HAS IMPROVED, PUNTER BROCK GLASS HAS BEEN INCONSISTENT
Last season's kicking duo of Nate Reed and Jake Cupitt left a lot to be desired. Despite them both moving on the team did not add recruits at either position during the 2026 recruiting cycle.
“We're comfortable with Skyler and Brock going into the season.” Special teams coordinator Rocco DiMeco said. “We had a lot of needs in recruiting and that was one area we felt alright about.”
Despire DiMeco's vote of confidence it was Sholder and Brock who were not able to push Reed and Cupitt for reps last season. Sholder allegedly got close late in the season but the team decided to stick with Reed's experience. Sholder has shown promise during spring ball with a reasonably powerful leg and good accuracy. The story has not been the same for Glass who has struggled with accuracy, power and hangtime throughout the session.
DONOVAN LEWIS IS THE PRIMARY RETURN MAN
The coaching staff held a form of open tryouts for both kick and punt return duties and the name that appears to be at the top of both lists is Donovan Lewis. Lewis, a senior receiver, split the kick return duties with Ja'Carree Kelly last season, returning five kicks for 127 yards. Kelly, now the team's top WR, was excluded from return duty tryouts. Jake Thaw handled the punt returns last season, averaging 10.7 yards per return. DiMeco is hoping for a bit more of a spark from the unit this season.
