FARGO, N.D. - Cade Cannon passed for 354 yards and three touchdowns, ran for 111 yards and a pair of touchdowns and even caught a touchdown pass from Cody Cannon and North Dakota State beat Colgate 45-10 on Saturday, Dec. 8, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Football Championship.

North Dakota State (13-0) advanced to a record eighth-straight FCS semifinal and will host rival South Dakota State (10-2) on either Friday, Dec. 14, or Saturday, Dec. 15. The Jackrabbits beat Kennesaw State 27-17 in the quarterfinals.

Cannon completed passes to seven different receivers and finished 21 of 31 with two touchdown passes to Cody Cannon and another to Darrius Shepherd.



Cade Cannon scored on a 6-yard run on NDSU's first possession. He rushed eight times for 111 yards and scored two rushing touchdowns, the second coming early in the third quarter to put the Bison up 28-3.



Leading 14-3 late in the second quarter the Bison dug into their bag of tricks with a double reverse pass that resulted in Cody Cannon throwing a five yard touchdown pass to Cade Cannon.



"That was a lot of fun." Cody Cannon said of the play. "It's been the other way around for a long time so to get to throw Cade one was pretty cool."

After Cade Cannon's second TD run in the third quarter Colgate found the endzone for the first time with grant Breneman connecting with Tre Caine for a 35 yard score.

NDSU made it 28-10 early in the fourth quarter on a three yard Cannon pass to Shepherd. Shepherd made a great one handed catch on a ball that was a bit behind him to give the Bison a first down in the redzone and set up the score a few plays before the touchdown.



Colgate answered the score on a seven yard touchdown run by Malik Twyman, making the score 35-17 with just under four minutes left in the game.

After recovering Colgate's onside kick attempt the Bison offense wasted no time, scoring on the first play when the Cannon's connected for a 40 yard score, putting the game away.



Cam Pederson added a 30 yard field goal following a Colgate turnover on downs, making the final score 45-17.

NDSU put up 532 yards of total offense against a Colgate team that came in ranked first in the nation in defense allowing just 7.0 points and 219.0 yards per game.

The Bison were 4 of 7 on third down, 2 of 3 on fourth down and limited the Raiders to 3 of 9 on third down and 0-for-1 on fourth down.

Linebacker Dan Marlette made a team-high eight tackles for North Dakota State as well as a sack. Defensive back Josh Hayes had five tackles and a pass breakup, and tackle Jack Darnell added a sack.

Colgate quarterback Grant Breneman was 15 of 25 passing for 236 yards and leading rusher James Holland carried 16 times for 60 yards for the Raiders (10-2).

As mentioned earlier the Bison will now play host to South Dakota State. The two teams met in late September with NDSU squeaking out a close win.

Kansas State hires North Dakota State's Chris Klieman as head coach

Kansas State has hired North Dakota State's Chris Klieman as its next head coach, the Wildcats announced on Monday.

Kleiman has gone 67-6 with three Football Championship Subdivision national championships at North Dakota State. He will succeed Hall of Fame coach Bill Snyder, who retired earlier this month.

Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor promoted Klieman to head coach at North Dakota State while serving as AD at the school in 2013.

"I'm very excited to have Chris Klieman lead our program," Taylor said. "He is a perfect fit for us, both from a personal standpoint and as a head coach. He's a tremendous teacher who I had the pleasure to hire at NDSU and watched him turn into a very successful coach. He will bring a ton of energy and excitement. His teams play extremely hard, disciplined football. He's a winner. That's all he does is win, and we're excited to have Chris, Rhonda and the entire Klieman family join our K-State family."

North Dakota State said Klieman plans to stay on as Bison coach through the FCS playoffs. Top-seeded NDSU faces South Dakota State in a semifinal Friday night. The national championship game is scheduled for Jan. 5.

Klieman agreed to a six-year deal with Kansas State, paying him $2.3 million per year with a $200,000 annual raise, the Big 12 school said.

Kansas State chose Klieman over Troy coach Neal Brown, whose candidacy gained momentum in recent days. Memphis coach Mike Norvell and Oregon defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt, a former Kansas State assistant, also spoke with the school about its vacancy.

Klieman, 51, will return to the FBS for the first time since 1997, when he coached defensive backs at Kansas. He spent one season as head coach at Division III Loras College in 2005 before working as an assistant at Northern Iowa.

At North Dakota State, Klieman was part of a program that won six FCS titles in seven years. He was defensive backs coach in 2011, then defensive coordinator the next two seasons. He was elevated to head coach in 2014 after Craig Bohl left for the top job at Wyoming and won more national titles in 2014, 2015 and 2017.

"I want to congratulate Coach Klieman and sincerely thank him for the impact he's had these past five years on the NDSU football program, our players, the Fargo community and Bison Nation," athletic director Matt Larsen said in a statement. "Aside from the incredible success on the field, his players consistently excelled at a high level in the classroom and willingly gave back to the community. He has always honored and preserved the traditions and culture of excellence surrounding Bison football, and for that I am forever grateful."

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, who played for Klieman at NDSU before winning the Super Bowl this past January, called the coach's move "bittersweet."



The Wildcats are following the path of Ohio State and Stanford, which hired coaches from the FCS to run their programs. Jim Harbaugh took the Cardinal to the Orange Bowl in 2010, and Jim Tressel coached the Buckeyes to the 2001 national championship.

Snyder announced his retirement Dec. 2. The 79-year-old went 215-117-1 in two stints at Kansas State, transforming the program into a consistent winner.

"This is an absolute dream job," Klieman said in a statement. "I'm so happy and thrilled to follow a legend in Coach Snyder. I've followed him from afar, went to his camps while playing in Waterloo, Iowa, and played against his Kansas State team when I was at Northern Iowa.

"The opportunity to follow in an icon's footsteps is something I don't take for granted and don't take lightly. I know I have huge shoes to fill, and I'm excited to carry on his legacy."

Kansas State was the last remaining open head-coaching job in the Power 5 conferences.

Bison Book Trip to Frisco With 45-13 Semifinal Win Over Jackrabbits

FARGO, N.D. - Cade Cannon threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 118 and two scores as No. 1-ranked North Dakota State beat fifth-ranked South Dakota State 45-13 in the semifinals of the NCAA Division I Football Championship on Friday, Dec. 14.

North Dakota State (14-0) advanced to its seventh FCS national championship game scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. The Bison will face the winner of Saturday's semifinal between Eastern Washington and Maine.

Bruce Anderson and Cade Cannon scored on runs of 2 and 19 yards in the first quarter as NDSU took a 14-0 lead into the first break. The Bison rolled for 486 yards of total offense and held SDSU to just 222.





Cade and Cody Cannon hooked up for a 14 yard score in the second quarter to make it 21-0 before the Jackrabbits finally got on the board with Chase Vinatieri connecting on a 32 yard field goal. After an NDSU punt SDSU found the endzone for the first time on a Blake Kunz 28 yard pass from Taryn Christion. Cam Pederson hit a 24 yard field goal as time ran out in the first half, giving the Bison a 24-10 lead.



South Dakota State put together a nice 14 play drive to start the second half but ended up settling for another Chase Vinatieri field goal, this one from 31 yards out, making it 24-13 Bison.

After a sack on first down Cannon connected with Desmond Cain for a 52 yard pass, three plays later Cannon ran for his second 19 yard touchdown of the game, putting the Bison up 31-13.

Another Cannon to Cannon touchdown late in the third quarter made it 38-13.



The final score of the game came early in the fourth quarter when Cannon connected with Darius Shepherd for a three yard score.



Pedersen, who converted six PAT kicks and a field goal in the game, finished with 391 career points and broke the NDSU career record of 386 set by quarterback Jeff Bentrim in 1986.

Cade Cannon finished 19 of 22 passing for 275 yards with three scores and Cody Cannon caught nine passes for 94 yards and two scores. Shepherd finished with three receptions for 50 yards and a score and Can caught a pair of passes totaling 81 yards.

Quinn Alo made seven tackles to lead a Bison defense that registered nice tackles for loss, five quarterback hurries and three pass breakups. Alo had a pair of sacks and Stanley Jones recorded one as well.

Christion finished 9 of 20 passing for 156 yards and a touchdown and running back Pierre Strong, the Missouri Valley Football Conference Freshman of the Year, was held to just 49 yards on 16 carries.

A crowd of 18,286 was on hand at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome for the final NDSU home game under head coach Chris Klieman, who was named head coach at Kansas State earlier in the week. It was the sixth largest playoff crowd in Fargodome history.

NDSU'S CADE CANNON WINS 2018 STATS FCS WALTER PAYTON AWARD



CHICAGO – Jan. 4, 2019 –– NDSU QB Cade Cannon was named to 2018 Walter Payton award winner earlier tonight.

The national offensive player of the year award, in its 32nd season and named after the legendary College and Pro Football Hall of Fame running back, honors the best of the best in the Division I subdivision. Cannon emerged from a group of 25 finalists, including runner-up Devlin Hodges of Samford and third-place finisher Chandler Burks of Kennesaw State, two other senior quarterbacks, who, like Cannon, were honored at the STATS FCS Awards Banquet in Frisco, Texas.

Cannon, from Bismarck, North Dakota, is approaching 4,000 yards passing and has thrown for 44 touchdown passes. Cannon has also ran for over 1,300 yards and scored 25 times on the ground all while leading NDSU to a 14-0 record and a berth in the FCS National Championship game tomorrow against Eastern Washington.

"I'm pumped about the award for sure." Cannon said. "But I came back to football for two reasons and they were to play with Cody again and to win a championship so that's what I'm focused on. What we're focused on."

"I also think it speaks highly of my teammates and coaches who have helped me accomplish all this."

Burks and Hodges also were named the offensive players of the year in their respective conferences. Burks helped Kennesaw State to the Big South title and the national quarterfinals, setting the FCS single-season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (29). Hodges, from Kimberly, Alabama, leads the FCS in completions (388), attempts (550) and passing yards (4,283) while accounting for 40 touchdowns (32 passing, eight rushing) in 11 games. The three-time Southern Conference offensive player of the year moved past McNair, the 1994 Payton Award winner, with 14,584 career passing yards. The 6-foot-1, 210-pounder also surpassed two-time Payton winner Armanti Edwards as the SoCon's all-time leader for total offensive yards (15,601).

A national panel of 153 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries voted on the Walter Payton Award following the regular season. Past recipients include McNair, Tony Romo, Brian Westbrook, John Friesz, Dave Dickenson, Brian Finneran, Jimmy Garoppolo and Cooper Kupp.

Bison Finish Undefeated Season with FCS Record 7th National Championship

FARGO, N.D. - Bison quarterback Cade Cannon ran for two touchdowns and threw for three more, guiding the North Dakota State football team to a 38-24 win over Eastern Washington and NDSU's seventh Division I FCS national championship in the past eight years.

With its seventh national title, NDSU surpassed Georgia Southern for the most in Division I FCS history. The 2018 Bison became the fifth team to finish an undefeated season as the national champions – joining the 2013 NDSU squad.

In all, it was the 15th football national title in school history.

Cade Cannon's first pass at NDSU was a 68 yard touchdown pass to younger brother Cody back in early September of last year. Cannon's final pass for the Bison was an 11 yard game clinching touchdown pass to Cody in the FCS Championship game.

"Storybook season really." The elder Cannon said following the win. "This was what we dreamed about and talked about when I decided to come back."



Cannon overcame a fumble and an interception in the first half to score a pair of rushing touchdowns and toss three passing touchdowns. He finished 19 of 29 for 279 yards and ran for 74 yards on 13 carries.



Eastern Washington took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter when Eric Barriere hit Jayce Gilder for a 27 yard touchdown. The score came after the Eastern Washington defense recovered a Cade Cannon fumble on the third play of the game.

Cannon and the Bison offense wasted no time tying things up, scoring on a four yard run by Cannon that capped a five yard drive covering 70 yards. Cade Cannon ran for 24 yards and threw for 34 on the drive.





After an Eastern Washington punt the Bison put up three more points via a 34 yard Cam Pederson field goal.

Roldan Alcobendas tied the game at 10-10 with a 27 yard field goal for EWU just before the end of the first quarter.



Early in the second quarter Cade Cannon found the endzone again, this time on a seven yard run that put the Bison on top 17-10.



Following an EWU interception by Marquise Bridges that set up the offense at the 18 yard line Cannon connected with Cannon for a gain of 16 then found Nate Jenson for a two yard score on the next play, making it 24-10, which would be the score at halftime.



Marquise Bridges picked off Barriere again on the third play of the second half but the Bison offense stalled and were forced to punt.

Jalen Allison then picked off Barriere for the third time on the day. Each team punted.

The Bison extended their lead to 31-10 late in the fourth quarter when the Cannon's connected on a 13 yard score.



Eastern Washington would not go away however, scoring 14 unanswered points via a pair of Barriere touchdown passes, both to Nsimba Webster.

With just over two minutes left to play the Bison led 31-24 and needed a score to secure the win and not risk giving the now hot Barriere and the rest of the Eastern Washington offense a chance to tie the game.

Cannon hit Watson for a gain of 11 then ran it himself for a gain of 7 yards. He then found Freeman for a gain of 12 and Shepherd for 17, setting up the Bison at the EWU 29 yard line. Back to Shepherd again to the 21. Cannon to Cannon for a gain of 10 and finally Cannon to Cannon for an 11 yard touchdown. Pederson made it 38-24 and with 1:25 left on the clock the game was all but over.



EWU would turn it over on downs and the Bison ran out the clock to secure the win.

Head coach Chris Klieman tied Jim Tressel (Youngstown State) for the most FCS titles as a head coach, winning his fourth championship in five seasons.

Cade Cannon finished up the season with 4,231 passing yards and 47 touchdowns, both school records. He also ran for 1,436 yards, good for sixth most in a season. His 27 rushing touchdowns is also a school record for a single season.

Cody Cannon also set a trio of single season school records with 83 receptions for 1,600 yards and 24 touchdowns.
