2026 Week Ten Preview - Fresno State (4-4) @ Oregon State (6-2)
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: November 6th, 2026

The Oregon State Beavers welcome the Fresno State Bulldogs to Reser Stadium this weekend, putting their perfect conference record on the line as they look to notch their 7th win this season, which would equal the Beavers' total from the previous two seasons combined.

Fresno State is currently 4th in the Pac-12, despite holding the tie-breaker over the 3rd-place Colorado State Rams, and if they want any shot at reaching the Pac-12 championship game in their first season, it starts with a win in Corvallis this weekend. On the other hand, the Bulldogs have yet to win consecutive games this season, and after downing the Wazzou Cougars 41-7 last week, the odds are ever in the favor of the Beavers in this contest.

Let's digest how these two teams rank in their first conference clash before we get Coach Mando's thoughts in "Leon's Lowdown."

Leon's Lowdown

RM: "Before we get to the game preview, Coach Mando, let me congratulate you on another influx of commitments after the dominant performance against the Aggies. How many recruits do you anticipate signing this cycle?"

AL: "As many as we can, Ricky. laughs But honestly, it's a fluid situation. We've got twenty graduating seniors, so that's the baseline number we're trying to hit. We all know in today's day and age that the transfer portal is always looming. We may lose some guys to the portal too, despite a strong year so far, so you always want to leave some wiggle room. On the same token, we aren't going to just hand out scholarships. We're building a standard here and that means we need athletes who buy into the program, not guys just looking for a platform for their next move."

RM: "What do you say to pundits who claim with the new transfer portal structure, programs in the Group of Six category are always going to essentially be farm systems for the bigger, destination schools?"

AL: "I think that's a two-part equation. Can lower-level schools give fringe prospects an opportunity to prove themselves, before transferring to a higher-profile program? Absolutely. I also think there is value in those "lower" programs to take some fallen stars, so to speak, guys who were recruited highly, but for whatever circumstance didn't shine at the blue bloods. We offer a unique situation where they can rebuild their value.

"I want to add a third option there. Why is it considered outside the realm of possibility that other schools could elevate their profile to eventually be considered one of those schools? Indiana is the most recent example. But since joining the ACC in 1953, the Clemson Tigers were 2-4 in bowl games and only won 9 or more games twice before their National Championship in 1981. After that? Consecutive 10-win seasons from '87-'90, then nothing until Dabo's 3rd season. You look at their recent success since 2011 and you think of them as one of the premier programs in the country. But it wasn't that way for a long time. So I definitely think there is room for a program that is committed to winning and does it the right way, to turn from one of those "farm system" programs into a destination program with sustained success."

RM: "Great point, Coach. I think a lot of college football fans look at it from the outside in, thinking 'why not us?" But sometimes you've got to make your own luck and forge a new path. Let's talk Fresno State, real quick, they've got some talent offensively with Aidan Armenta and his trio of speed receivers. Is it going to be business as usual this weekend, or are you going to switch up the scheme to combat their explosiveness?"

AL: "We've stuck to our guns all season, with pretty solid results in my opinion. Obviously, there are situations in the game that you adjust for, but outside of real-time changes, I don't foresee a seismic shift in our plan."

•••

Hearing Coach Mando talk about programs changing their circumstance and forging a new path, I'm not going to lie, has got me fired up. Why can't Oregon State be the next Indiana or Ole Miss, leveraging the transfer portal to keep adding top-tier talent looking for a change of scenery, until their perception among high schoolers changes to start hauling in some big-time prospects.

It sounds like delusions of grandeur, but every journey starts with a step. Consider this season as the first step to a bigger goal.

But before we get to the future, we have to handle the present. Fresno State.

They've got speed, they've got a capable quarterback, and they've hung with just about every team they've faced.

Fresno State 21, Oregon State 24. McCreery saves the day again as Coach Mando's defense bends enough to make it closer than we like, but ultimately doesn't break under pressure.

Bulldogs Hand Beavers 1st Conference Loss Behind 21 2nd-Half Points
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: November 7th, 2026

You can't win 'em all, so they say, but this game feels like one the Beavers let get away. Despite holding the Fresno State offense to three field goals in the 1st half, despite two of their scoring drives starting in plus territory, the Beavers' defense finally bowed as the Bulldogs scored on three of their final four drives to leave Reser Stadium with a 30-24 victory.

When the opposing team starts four possessions already at, or past, midfield, you're going to have a rough day. Yet, the Beavers' defense consistently did just enough to keep the Bulldogs from breaking through. Their own offense, however, didn't pick up its slack. By halftime, the Bulldogs had outgained the Beavers 173-53 offensively, but held a slim 9-3 lead.

When Kallen Gutridge threw an interception midway through the 3rd quarter that set up the Bulldogs at the Oregon State 35, the momentum finally shifted. Facing 4th and 4, HC Matthew Entz opted to go for the conversion, rather than take the points. CB Noble Thomas Jr slipped in coverage and Jordan Mala'ulu slipped free for the 30-yard touchdown.

Once the dam finally broke, the Bulldogs poured through. The Beavers' own offense finally woke up facing a 16-3 deficit, but they could only match the Bulldogs score for score, never having an opportunity to take the lead. With just over three minutes left in the 4th quarter, the Beavers had a chance to make a stand and give their own offense one more shot at redemption.

Instead, WR Harold Duvall caught a crossing route, stiff-armed Kodi DeCambra and galloped 57 yards before Kyle Chen finally dragged him down. Two plays later and Mala'ulu slipped another tackle before accelerating for the 13-yard score and the Beavers were officially in desperation mode.

To his credit, Gutridge would march the Beavers down the field to pull within a score once again, but with 20 seconds on the clock, it was merely a formality.

At his post-game press conference, DC Armando Leon refused to make excuses for his defense or blame the rainy conditions.

•••

Question One: Olivia LeRusso (Oregonlive): "Coach, of the 30 points surrendered by your defense tonight, only two of those scoring drives saw the Fresno State offense have to march the length of the field. How difficult is it for a defense to hold up when you feel they have to play perfectly?"

Armando Leon: "Well, Olivia, of those two drives that marched the length of the field, one of them was their final drive that stretched the lead back to double digits. We had a chance there to get a stop and give Kallen and the boys one more shot. Instead, we tackled poorly and let two different Bulldogs pick up extra yardage. That's what lost this game, period."

Question Two: Lance Vickers (The Collegian): "Coach, it looked like you once again stuck to your guns defensively and stayed with your scheme. And the Bulldogs completed 83% of their passes, with Jordan Mala'ulu hauling in three touchdowns. At any point did you and head coach Jonathan Smith discuss changing tactics, especially when the game was still within reach midway through the 3rd quarter?"

Armando Leon: "If you run the tape back, Lance, you'll see we did mix up our coverages, like we always do. We ran doubles on Jordan at times, but those don't show up on the stat sheet since he didn't have the ball thrown his way. It's easy in hindsight to say we should have done "x", but we make the adjustments in the game as we see fit. If we really break down the tape, a lot of their larger gains were directly attributed to poor tackling, not being out of position. We work on tackling drills at the beginning and end of every practice, but judging by the performance we put out there today? Maybe we need a whole week dedicated to tackling in the rain, 'cause quite frankly some of our guys acted like they were scared to get a 'lil mud on their jersey."

Question Three: Chip Swarley (CW Sports): "With today's loss, the Beavers are now 2-3 at home on the year. What do you say to the fans that have come out to support your program and have been treated to lackluster results at times, despite strong performances on the road?"

Armando Leon: "I would say that if we don't finish the year with a win on senior night, I'll personally reimburse every season ticket holder. We hold ourselves to a standard here and that starts with showing out for those that support us the most. So go ahead and quote that, slap it on the front page of The Daily Barometer. Defensive coordinator Armando Leon will personally reimburse every single season ticket holder if we lose to Boise State on November 21st, while we celebrate senior night."

•••

It's hard to put blame on either side of the ball in this one, but you have to wonder how different this game turns out if the Beavers' offense doesn't wait until they're trailing 16-3 to finally wake up. To that point, they'd had less than 75 yards of offense and had hung their defense out to dry with short fields more times than not. If they can even generate enough yardage that the Bulldogs offense isn't starting at practically midfield, this game is different.

It's hard to expect the defense to go out there and play mistake-free and yet, they did for two and a half quarters. But it felt like the stadium let out a collective sigh when Jordan Mala'ulu hauled in the 30-yard touchdown on 4th-and-4 and the Bulldogs smelled blood. Hats off to them, they came in here and took care of business.

The Beavers will hit the road to face the Colorado State Rams next week, now needing a win to keep their slim lead in the Pac-12 standings, before the boys return home for a senior night contest against the Broncos that suddenly got a lot more interesting, and potentially expensive for Coach Mando.

I will say, 13 of their 30 points came on short fields. But the final two drives were on us. Terrible tackling in the weather.

2026 Week Eleven Preview - Oregon State (6-3) @ Colorado State (5-4)
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: November 13th, 2026

Our beloved Oregon State Beavers will hit the road this week looking to get back on track after a disappointing 30-24 defeat at home to the Fresno State Bulldogs. The Rams have been on a tear since a 1-3 start to the season, winning four of their last five games. Their only loss? To the same Bulldogs that just beat the Beavers, making this game even more crucial for both squads. Oregon State, Boise State, Colorado State, and Fresno State are all tied atop the Pac-12 conference with a 3-1 record. Oregon State will have to keep the pressure on those other three teams with a win in Fort Collins, otherwise their conference championship aspirations are going up in smoke.

Here is a quick preview of how the two conference foes matchup, before Coach Leon breaks down the keys to a Beavers win.

Leon's Lowdown

RM: "Welcome back to another edition of 'Leon's Lowdown' with none other than Coach Armando 'Mando' Leon. Coach, what does the team need to accomplish to get back on track after that letdown against Fresno State last week?"

AL: "It starts with sound, mistake-free football, Ricky. Too often we missed routine tackles going for the big hit, period. Colorado State is another team on a hot streak at the moment, so we can't just overlook them and focus on Boise State next week. 'Cause if we do? We don't have a shot at making the championship game."

RM: "Colorado State has rattled off some impressive wins lately. What do you see on tape that will need to be addressed if the Beavs are going to prevail?"

AL: "It all starts with Darius Curry. He's probably the most complete dual-threat quarterback we've faced this year and it's going to present some matchup problems for sure. He's got the arm to make every throw, and the legs to escape pressure and burn the defense. Playing soundly is going to be more crucial than ever, because the first time he catches us out of position, he's going to make us pay. He doesn't have 338 rushing yards and four touchdowns by accident, Ricky."

RM: "Last question, Coach. I know you don't want to look ahead to Boise State-"

AL: "And we're not, Ricky. We'll talk about my Boise State guarantee next week, when we're preparing for the game. Only thing on my mind right now is getting back in the win column in Fort Collins."

You heard him, folks. He isn't worried about his guarantee right now, 'cause he's worried about the next game. And I'll be frank, if we don't win this game, next week doesn't matter. It would give both Fresno State and Colorado State an edge in the conference with tie-breakers, and then we're hoping for a miracle.

I don't believe in miracles. But I do believe in the Beavers.

Oregon State 35, Colorado State 21.

Prove me right, Beavers.

Just how much is Coach Leon making at OSU cause that's alot of Cheddar he will be dishing out when Boise State cuts off the Beavers tail on Senior Day.
