Stanford hands Notre Dame their fourth loss of the season, likely clinch playoff spot
After rushing for a combined six yards in their last three drives, Stanford coach Bubba Mack challenged his offensive line midway through the third quarter, leading Notre Dame by only a touchdown. Stanford responded with a twelve play drive, all but one of them being runs, and converted fourth and goal from the one-yard line to extend their lead and never look back as they took care of Notre Dame 35-17 in the regular season finale.

Notre Dame's Nick Nelson led a couple of quick scoring drives after initially trailing 14-0 in the second quarter but the Irish offense ran out of juice in the second half, only scoring a field goal. They started the second half with back-to-back three and outs and after the Cardinal's long scoring drive which ate up most of the third quarter, Notre Dame was forced to settle for a field goal after getting the ball to the Stanford 33-yard line.

Stanford then responded with a three play scoring drive that started with a 30-yard completion to Timmy Neil and ended with a 37-yard touchdown run by Anthony Masifilo. Stanford quarterback Earl Nienhuis finished the game with 247 yards and two touchdowns with an interception on an Hail Mary attempt. Nienhuis threw his 39th touchdown of the season, breaking a school record.

The Irish would get the ball across the 50-yard line on the next drive but on third and one, Nelson would be stopped on an option play and his fourth down heave into the endzone would be knocked down with three minutes left in the game.

The Victory Lap: A first round bye awaits Stanford, the Cardinal rooting guide and running game concerns

The top seven of the College Football Rankings held serve with Stanford beating No. 14 Notre Dame 35-17 to end their season on an eight game winning streak, including wins over USC, TCU, Oregon, Cal and Notre Dame who were all ranked at one point.

USC and TCU's terrible end to the season as well as Notre Dame looking at an unranked finished hurts Stanford's strength of record but its still an impressive resume, especially with earlier wins against Ohio State and LSU looking better in the light.

Stanford's only loss of the season was by a touchdown to Georgia who will likely make the playoffs and on the road. This should guaranteed the Cardinal not only a playoff spot but likely a playoff bye as well.

Who to root for next week?
Stanford needs to finish in the top four to earn a playoff bye and enter conference championship week as the No. 2 team in the country. They're behind Missouri and ahead of Clemson, who match up in the SEC Championship Game and considering they have the same record as both teams, Stanford should be ahead of the loser of that game and behind the winner, especially if Missouri wins.

If Clemson wins, there is a possibility that Missouri drops just one spot to No. 2 and kicks Stanford down to No. 3 but that's unlikely to happen since, at some points this season, the committee has put Stanford above Missouri already.

The other school to watch is Miami as they play Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game. Could Miami jump all the way from No. 9 into the top four with a win over No. 7 Ohio State? Possibly but they wouldn't bump Stanford out as Stanford has already beaten Ohio State.

The biggest threat would be a close win for Clemson, which might keep Missouri in the top four, and for Miami to blowout Ohio State and for Pittsburgh to beat No. 18 North Carolina in a convincing fashion which would make Clemson, Missouri, Miami and North Carolina all have claims to be a top four team and the committee to "punish" Stanford for not being in a conference but with their tough schedule this season and to finish 11-1, it's hard to see a scenario where Stanford isn't a top four team.

Stanford ends the season without a 1,000-yard rusher
For the first time in Stanford coach Bubba Mack's tenure at Stanford, the Cardinal don't have a 1,000-yard rusher after having multiple each season in the previous four seasons.

Sophomore running back Rashawn Crouse could reach that mark in the postseason, needing 174 more yards but the running game has taken a big step back with the loss of Trumaine Lasike. They still lead the country in rushing with 3,004 yards as a team but there's been long spells in games, especially contested ones, where Stanford has been unable to run the ball when they want to and when the opponent is expecting it which is the true sign of an elite running attack.

They'll need to find their form in the playoffs as Earl Nienhuis has four interceptions in the last four games with six fumbles and will be making his playoff debut as a first-year starter.
