Big win but fortunate. Missing points with bad clock management and then almost blowing it in the 4th. I’ve been on the Stanford train but you’re giving me doubts.

The Victory Lap: Did Stanford just clinch a playoff spot, Big Game Colt and Richard Caussin teaches us a lesson

Published Nov. 10, 2031, 09:56 a.m.
Stanford's 31-24 win over No. 8 Oregon gives them their fifth win over a ranked opponent, not including their wins over Florida and TCU who were ranked at one point this season.
The one-loss Cardinal probably won't be able to leapfrog Oklahoma whose undefeated with just one ranked win but it does give them some much needed buffer over the other one-loss teams such as Miami, Clemson and Missouri whose resumes aren't as impressive.
Two-loss Notre Dame is currently No. 9 and the Cardinal play them to end the season after this week's bye and California after that. Obviously, the goal is to beat Notre Dame, and Cal, and have a first-round bye but in case that doesn't happen, Stanford is still in pretty good shape even with a loss.
They likely won't fall below No. 9 with a loss to Notre Dame which should keep them in the playoffs.
Colt Mixon named a semi-finalist for the Mackey
The true freshman tight end has been named a semi-finalist for the John Mackey Award, presented to the best tight end of the season. Mixon has 61 catches for 525 yards and a team leading twelve touchdowns with most of them coming in the Cardinal's marquee matchups.
He scored four touchdowns against Florida in the game that established Stanford as a real player this season and then had six catches in the win over Ohio State, scored a touchdown against Georgia and had two touchdowns against both USC and Oregon.
He's been a constant in the offense with the second most receptions and yards behind only Rodney Cookus.
Richard Caussin saved the best for last
A lot of people, understandably so, wanted Stanford to go out and spend at the linebacker position in order to replace Isaiah Lanovoi and Manu Toomer, their two best players on defense.
Stanford instead relied on their returning players and its paid off with Caussin having his best season with fifty tackles, seven tackles for loss and four interceptions and had a key tackle on third down against Oregon.
While the portal is exciting and the prospect of new players and a high ranking can be alluring, it's Caussin, an homegrown talent, that's been the backbone of this defense. He was a three-star prospect that got better every year, took advantage of his limited opportunities as a backup in previous seasons and is making the most of his chances this year.

Former Stanford target quarterback George Ogbonnaya commits to Texas
Chris Wallace -- 247Sports Stanford Football Insider
Five-star quarterback George Ogbonnaya, who visited Stanford earlier this season, has committed to the University of Texas, joining the Longhorns' top-20 recruiting class.
Ogbonnaya chose Texas over Texas A&M and Stanford, who he was widely linked to following the summer and into the fall when he visited all three programs. Stanford made a big push for the second-ranked quarterback in the country but ultimately, the pull of playing for one of Texas' top in-state programs proved to be too much.
Stanford did land a commitment over the weekend from three-star linebacker Stephen Flott out of Burton, Texas. Flott is a top 50 player in the state of Texas and projects to be an inside linebacker within the Cardinal's defensive scheme. The staff is high on his athleticism and natural coverage ability and are impressed by his play strength with the frame (six-foot-three, 219 pounds) to be an every down player once he physically matures.

Stanford adds to their trenches with commitments from OT Cole Schlesinger and DE Willie Rudolph
Chris Wallace -- 247Sports Stanford Football Insider
Stanford's recruiting class has jumped into the top five with commitments from four-star defensive end Willie Rudolph, four-star offensive tackle Cole Schlesinger and three-star linebacker Joey Ahlers.
The Cardinal beat out rival Notre Dame for Rudolph who fits perfectly as a five-technique in Stanford's base defense with the ability to kick inside as a pass rushing defensive tackle at six-foot-three and 292 pounds.
The coaching staff loves the power element that Rudolph brings along with plus athleticism for his size as he becomes the highest ranked player in Stanford's class as a top sixty ranked player in the country.
Schlesinger is another highly ranked player, just outside the top 247, albeit more of a project than Rudolph. He has the size at six-foot-six and 321 pounds and is internally viewed as a potential left tackle of the future but he'll need some seasoning to improve his play strength. He struggles at time to get movement in the running game, a key component in Stanford's rushing offense which is more of a vertical run game that leans on their offensive line to re-establish the line of scrimmage.
He joins an impressive offensive line class that features another offensive tackle in Ashton Bayless and two interior four-stars in Alex DiMarco and Emari Cashman.
Ahlers is the lowest ranked player in the class but has drawn comparisons internally to Colt Mixon in last year's class who was the lowest ranked player and yet has had the most impact as a true freshman. Similar to Mixon but on the defensive side, Ahlers' physical traits are elite and why Stanford is so high on him. They believe that with experience, as Ahlers has only played football for two seasons, he could develop into a high level player for them, whether at linebacker, EDGE or even a box safety.
