Huskies finally put up a fight, but slide continues, fall to Rice 28-21
EAST HARTFORD, CT — With under a minute left in the game, UConn had the ball in striking distance. Nick Evers took the snap, dropped back, and floated the ball to receiver TJ Sheffield on a curl route in the end zone, only to watch the Rice defender jump in front of his receiver for the game-sealing interception as the Huskies drop to 1-7 on the season.
"We were right there," said coach Jim Mora. "Our offense played much better this week, and I think it's something we can build on moving forward. I'm proud of our guys."
Evers threw two interceptions, but also connected for two touchdowns as well. He also ran for 45 yards, although coughed up another fumble this week.
The team had it's best success running the ball all season with 147 yards on 28 team carries, and a touchdown, scored by Victor Rosa.

For Rice, it was EJ Warner who found his receivers all game long to the tune of 334 yards. Although most of those yards came via Jet Touch passes to Kobie Campbell, who was able to scoot to the outside, untouched even, most of the time. The slight-framed Campbell torched the Huskies and was a main driver for Rice's victory.
Overall, it was a promising showing for the Huskies, who were in the fight all the way up to the final seconds.
Next week, UConn finishes up the six-game home stand with a game against Georgia State.
