Pittsburgh, PA. - The Pittsburgh Steelers needed every bit of their 18-point cushion heading into the fourth quarter Sunday, and they still nearly gave it all back.

Pittsburgh survived with a hard-earned victory over the Minnesota Vikings, but the final score flatters a Steelers performance that was considerably messier than a 6-0 team ought to produce, particularly for Leonard Lawry, who faced his former team for the first time and looked every bit like a quarterback with something on his mind.

Lawry finished with 266 yards and two touchdowns but completed less than 50 percent of his attempts, a combination of four dropped passes from his receivers and more than a few misfires from a quarterback who typically does not miss. He was candid about the reasons afterward.

"Nerves and mechanics," Lawry said simply. "I'll get them cleaned up."

The Steelers built a commanding 31-13 advantage through three quarters and appeared to be cruising toward their most comfortable win of the young season. Then the fourth quarter arrived and everything unraveled at once. Two Pittsburgh fumbles gave Minnesota life, and Jordan Addison exploited the chaos with a pair of long touchdowns that had the Steelers sideline shifting uncomfortably. The more damaging of the two came late — J.J. McCarthy found Addison on a 77-yard go-route, the former Pitt receiver blazing past Joey Porter Jr. to pull Minnesota within striking distance and set up a frantic final sequence.

Porter Jr. was accountable in the postgame.

"J.J. started to move around and I cheated up thinking he was going to take off," he said. "Jordan made a good play, adjusted his route, and just got behind me. It's a mistake I won't make twice."

The onside kick that followed gave Pittsburgh one final opportunity to close the door, and Quinshon Judkins obliged — grinding out enough yards to drain the remaining clock and preserve the victory before Minnesota could manufacture one more opportunity.

The Steelers escape to 6-0 and travel to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium next week, where one streak will end regardless of the outcome. Either Pittsburgh extends its winning run to seven, or the Kansas City Chiefs, still searching for their first victory of the 2029 season, end their own skid at Pittsburgh's expense.
