For two quarters, No. 3 California looked every bit the College Football Playoff contender it had been all season. Then LSU turned the Fiesta Bowl into a nightmare.
The No. 11 Tigers erased an 18-point halftime deficit with a furious second-half rally, scoring 39 of the game's final 46 points to stun California 45-31 in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals Friday night.
It was a collapse of historic proportions for the Golden Bears, who led 24-6 at halftime and appeared to be cruising toward a spot in the national semifinal.
Instead, LSU will keep playing and California's dream season is over.
Quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele was spectacular early, carving up the LSU defense with his arm while repeatedly finding senior wide receiver Chase Hendricks.
Hendricks opened the scoring with a 16-yard touchdown reception, and after LSU answered with a 51-yard field goal, Cal struck again. Sagapolutele found Ian Strong for a 22-yard touchdown, giving the Golden Bears a 14-3 advantage after one quarter.
Cal's defense kept LSU from finding any rhythm, while Sagapolutele continued to distribute the ball. A 47-yard field goal from Towns McGough pushed the lead to 17-3 before Sagapolutele connected with Cooper Perry for a 7-yard touchdown.
Suddenly, Cal was up 24-3. LSU managed a field goal just before halftime, but the message seemed clear: California was in control.
However, the Tigers came out of halftime with an entirely different identity.
Quarterback Sam Leavitt stopped trying to win the game through the air and began leaning on LSU's rushing attack. Caden Durham immediately provided a spark, scoring on a 4-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 24-13.
Cal answered when Sagapolutele found Hendricks again, this time for a breathtaking 59-yard touchdown, restoring a 31-13 advantage. But that would be Cal's final points of the night.
LSU running back Harlem Berry answered with a 2-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter, and suddenly the Tigers were within striking distance at 31-20 entering the fourth.
Berry struck again, this time from 1 yard out, and the Tigers added a two-point conversion to make it 31-28. California's 18-point lead had been reduced to three.
The Golden Bears couldn't answer, then LSU kicker Thomas McGibbs drilled a 30-yard field goal with 5:13 remaining, tying the game at 31-31.
With just under two minutes remaining, Durham scored his second touchdown of the night on a 9-yard run, putting LSU ahead 38-31.
California suddenly needed a touchdown just to stay alive. Instead, LSU delivered the knockout punch.
Ty Benefield intercepted Sagapolutele and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown, sending the LSU sideline into a frenzy and turning a three-point game into a 45-31 Tigers victory.
From down 24-6 at halftime to winning by 14. From the brink of elimination to the national semifinals.
For much of the night, Sagapolutele played like a quarterback worthy of the playoff stage. The sophomore from Ewa Beach, Hawaii completed 37 of 53 passes for 425 yards and four touchdowns, finishing with a 158.3 passer rating.
He repeatedly attacked LSU downfield, including touchdown passes of 16, 22 and 59 yards. But the fourth quarter exposed the thin margin between brilliance and heartbreak in the College Football Playoff.
If California had won, Hendricks likely would have been at the center of the celebration. Instead, the senior wide receiver leaves the playoff with one of the best performances of his career. Hendricks caught 11 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns.
The Tigers ultimately finished with 531 total yards, including 200 rushing yards on 44 carries. Berry led the way with 99 yards and two touchdowns, breaking eight tackles along the way. Durham added 59 yards and two touchdowns.
The Fiesta Bowl was supposed to be the next step in California's championship journey. Instead, it became LSU's defining moment. The Tigers looked dead at halftime, walking into the locker room trailing by 18.
Now, LSU is one victory away from the national championship game. For California, there is only the painful reality of what might have been. The Golden Bears were 30 minutes away from the semifinal. Instead, LSU authored one of the wildest comebacks of the dynasty's postseason.
