I wish ASU's non-conference slate wasn't already packed. Was hoping to get USC on there at some pointYaBoyRobRoy wrote: ↑11 Aug 2026, 02:26Looking forward to this season opener, nothing like jumping right into conference play. Beat the Cougs!
definitely going to need to hit the ground running against BYU tho!
we definitely got lucky with the schedule this year. No TTU, OK State, or KState is going to help. WVU is ranked, but we'll see how legit they are, and I beat TAMU last year in the Liberty Bowl with a less talented squad.
Double digit wins is a must this year

Arizona State Withstands Late BYU Rally To Open 2027 With A W
31 #24 BYU (0-1) @ Arizona State (1-0) 41 | Mountain America Stadium | Tempe, AZ.
By Emilio Suarez
September 4th, 2027
It came down to the wire, but the Arizona State Sun Devils opened the 2027 season in the best possible way, with a win. Arizona State built a seemingly commanding 27-10 lead early in the third quarter after Jessiah McGrew undercut a Bear Bachmeier crossing route and deposited the interception into the end zone.
Ultimately, BYU wasn't ready to bow into the night, scoring 21 straight points to take a stunning 31-27 lead after Brent Gordon Jr. secured his own pick-six to put an uncomfortable silence over the crowd at Mountain America Stadium.
With the whole stadium holding its collective breath, Austin Mack proved why he won the starting job. The former Alabama backup led a surgical 12-play drive that chewed up over six minutes of game time before calmly finding Kyson Brown in the flat for the go-ahead six-yard score.
Bear Bachmeier and the Cougars had one last gasp, but a 4th-down heave skipped harmlessly across the turf, allowing Kyson Brown to add an insurance touchdown in the waning moments of the game to seal the 41-31 victory.
"We did a lot of good out there," praised Charlie Weis Jr. after his first win as a head coach, "But we beat ourselves too many times out there. You aren't going to give up three touchdowns of 50 or more yards and win a game very often."
"We need to use this as a learning experience. We had our foot on their throats and let it off. I don't intend to be in that position again."
The positive, outside of the win, is that Arizona State's defense looked much improved sans the big plays. It was well-documented that the 2026 Sun Devils didn't snag their first interception until late in the season. This year, they made sure to get on the board early as they tallied four interceptions—two by FSU transfer JaBril Rawls—to make sure that narrative stays buried in the past.
Arizona State will remain at home next week for a tune-up contest against the Cal Poly Bears.

2027 Week Two Preview
Cal Poly Mustangs (0-0) @ Arizona State (1-0)
The Devil's Due Mailbag — Week Two Preview

Published: September 10rd, 2027
The Arizona State Sun Devils survived their first test of the season with an opening week win over the 24th-ranked BYU Cougars. Now, they get to feed off that momentum and hopefully iron out the kinks with FCS Cal Poly heading into the desert.
Pitchfork Points
Execute, without turnoversThe Sun Devils won. Austin Mack threw for 300+ yard and the go-ahead touchdown in the final minute. He also threw two interceptions and barely completed more than 50% of his passes. Let's focus on keeping the good and cutting the bad this week against Cal Poly to set the foundation for the rest of the season.
Where is everyone else?Kyson Brown was Kyson Brown. RVB exceeded 100 yards. And then, it was everyone else. Austin Carlisle scored a touchdown in the Wildcat and added 50 all-purpose yards. JBJ had a few nice catches. But, we need more, from everywhere. This offense can't lean on Kyson and RVB only. Let's see some guys get schemed up tomorrow to build confidence going forward.
More boom, less bust.It was clear that the Sun Devils defense didn't want a prolonged period of time without an interception after last season. They were biting on routes worse than a teething toddler. But that contributed to three HUGE plays that kept BYU in the game. More of the boom, without the bust, ha to be a goal tomorrow.

Arizona State Pummels Cal Poly
7 Cal Poly (0-1) @ Arizona State (2-0) 64 | Mountain America Stadium | Tempe, AZ.
By Emilio Suarez
September 11th, 2027
The Arizona State Sun Devils did what everyone expected them to do when the Cal Poly Mustangs galloped into Mountain America Stadium.
Dominated.
Arizona State jumped out to a 33-0 lead before the Mustangs had earned a first down and rode the early lead into the eventual 64-7 victory. All you need to know about this slaughtering is this:
Arizona State would have won without an offensive touchdown. Arizona State's defense recorded a pick six and a safety, meaning even without an offensive touchdown would have won the game 9-7.
That's called domination, folks.
Austin Carlisle showed off his dynamic ability with 81 rushing yards, 35 receiving yards, and two touchdowns while Kyson Brown continued to be the catalyst for the offense with 184 total yards and two touchdowns.
"Still need to clean up some of the decision making, and obviously can't be throwing interceptions. But overall, a marked improvement from last week," evaluated QB Austin Mack, who had 389 passing yards and four touchdowns with a red zone interception after the ball was tipped at the line.
Arizona State will take their 2-0 record on the road next week as they travel to Allegiant Stadium to face the UNLV Rebels.

gotta balance being aggressive better. We left six points on the board going for tuddies. But overall, you right. They were one of the three teams on the schedule I could see us losing too, so it was definitely a great start

2027 Week Three Preview
Arizona State (2-0) @ #25 UNLV (2-0)
The Devil's Due Mailbag — Week Three Preview
By: Emilio Suarez

Arizona State will hit the road for the first time in 2027 as they travel north to Las Vegas to face the 25th-ranked UNLV Rebels at Allegiant Stadium.
UNLV may be ranked, but after a statement win over Kenny Dillingham and the USC Trojans in Week One, cracks are starting to show. The Rebels needed a fourth-quarter rally to beat FCS Utah State 14-10 last week, begging the question if USC choked, or UNLV stole the day in Week One. How they handle the incoming Sun Devils will determine how their season goes from here on out.
Pitchfork Points
Who is going to step up offensively?Kyson Brown has electrified, RVB has filled in Omarion Miller's shoes seamlessly, and Austin Carlisle is the sparkplug. Who is going to step up outside of the trifecta? Mack has struggled with consistency to open the season, but it's hard to ignore the 10 drops the Sun Devils already have this season. Someone has to become the other weapon at wide receiver opposite of RVB, or we may be in trouble.
Keep hunting in the secondaryThe Sun Devils secondary has been revolutionary to open the season, snagging six interceptions through the first two contests. The ASU defense has been aggressive in zone coverage and breaking on the ball early, resulting in the interceptions. And the occasional deep ball. The lone touchdown by Cal Poly last week came after Zashon Rich tried to undercut a go-route and came up just short. Pat Surtain Sr. has the boys hunting for turnovers early and often, but they have to start choosing their spots if we aren't going to turn into toast by mid-season.
Is the offense 'too gimmicky'?This was already partially addressed previously, but it's worth noting again. RVB gets open, but everything else the Sun Devils have done this season seems manufactured. That's not entirely a bad thing, yet. But at some point, Austin Carlisle and Kyson Brown won't be the only gifted athletes on the field. Jerome Bettis Jr., Jaren Hamilton, Cam'Ron Lacy. Someone needs to become an option in the passing game to keep things rolling smoothly.
