Nashville, Tennessee - Arkansas had Vanderbilt exactly where it wanted it.

After falling behind by 10 points, the Razorbacks had seized control of the game, shut down the Commodores' rushing attack and carried a 21-20 lead into the fourth quarter. But one explosive play changed everything, and Arkansas' final opportunity ended with the football being knocked away in the end zone as Vanderbilt escaped with a 26-21 victory.

It was a frustrating finish to a game in which Arkansas controlled possession, ran 30 more offensive plays and nearly doubled Vanderbilt in first downs. The Razorbacks finished with a 25-11 advantage in first downs and outgained the Commodores 334-270, but two interceptions, a costly special teams penalty and Vanderbilt's ability to generate explosive plays through the air ultimately outweighed those advantages.

Vanderbilt struck first when Sedrick Alexander scored from a yard out midway through the opening quarter. Arkansas answered with a two-yard touchdown run from Braylen Russell, but the tie lasted less than a minute. Blaze Berlowitz found Ja'Cory Thomas for a 51-yard touchdown with 1:55 remaining in the quarter to put the Commodores back in front, 14-7.

A 28-yard Brock Taylor field goal extended Vanderbilt's advantage to 17-7 in the second quarter before Arkansas began working its way back into the game.

The Razorbacks leaned heavily on their ground attack, with Russell providing the foundation. The sophomore eventually finished with 107 yards on 17 carries, and Arkansas piled up 183 rushing yards while Vanderbilt managed just 20.

Arkansas finally cashed in just before halftime. Sutton Smith powered across the goal line from a yard out with five seconds remaining, cutting Vanderbilt's lead to 17-14 and sending the Razorbacks into the locker room with momentum.

That momentum carried into an eventful third quarter.

Arkansas' defense came up with a huge play when defensive end Charlie Collins blocked a Vanderbilt field goal, giving the offense an opportunity to take its first lead of the afternoon. A few moments later, KJ Jackson delivered it himself. The quarterback broke free for a 10-yard touchdown run, and Max Gilbert's extra point put Arkansas ahead 21-17 with 4:26 remaining in the third.

But what appeared to be another defensive stop later in the quarter instead became one of the game's pivotal moments.

Arkansas got off the field on third down, only to watch the special teams unit be flagged for roughing the kicker on the ensuing punt. The penalty handed Vanderbilt a fresh set of downs and kept the Commodores' drive alive. Vanderbilt eventually turned the second chance into points, with Taylor's field goal cutting the Arkansas advantage to 21-20 as the game moved into the fourth quarter.

The Razorbacks still had the lead, but their margin for error was gone.

Arkansas' first possession of the fourth stalled, giving Vanderbilt another opportunity. This time the Commodores found the explosive play they needed.

Berlowitz connected with Junior Sherrill for 56 yards, flipping the field in one play and putting Vanderbilt in position to reclaim the lead. A few minutes later, Berlowitz found Thomas again, this time for an 11-yard touchdown with 3:42 remaining.

Thomas' second touchdown reception gave Vanderbilt a 26-21 advantage. Arkansas kept it a five-point game by stopping the ensuing two-point conversion, leaving the Razorbacks with an opportunity to win with a touchdown.

The offense couldn't capitalize on its first chance.

Arkansas moved the ball but was stopped on fourth down, turning possession back over to Vanderbilt with the Commodores needing only to drain the remaining clock.

The Razorback defense responded.

Arkansas forced a quick three-and-out, getting Jackson and the offense one final opportunity with 94 seconds remaining.

Jackson kept the Razorbacks alive with plays through the air and with his feet as Arkansas scrambled downfield. Despite struggling through a 20-of-38 passing performance that included two interceptions, the quarterback gave his team one final shot at stealing the game.

With the clock expiring, Jackson launched a desperation pass into the Vanderbilt end zone.

For a moment, Arkansas had a chance.

Then the ball was knocked away.

The incompletion ended the game and sealed a 26-21 Vanderbilt victory, leaving Arkansas to lament a game in which the Razorbacks had numerous opportunities to take control.

Arkansas' defense largely did its job. Vanderbilt averaged just 1.0 yard per rush, converted only two of 10 third downs and produced only 11 first downs. Jaheim Johnson and Carter Stoutmire led the Razorbacks with six tackles apiece, while Ja'Quavion Smith and Quincy Rhodes Jr. each recorded a sack.

The difference was Vanderbilt's passing game. Berlowitz completed 15 of 25 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 10 yards per attempt. The 51-yard touchdown to Thomas in the first quarter and 56-yard connection with Sherrill in the fourth accounted for 107 of those yards and directly contributed to two Vanderbilt touchdowns.

Arkansas, meanwhile, had to manufacture nearly everything methodically. The Razorbacks ran 75 plays to Vanderbilt's 45 and held the ball longer, but averaged only 4.5 yards per snap. Jackson threw for just 151 yards, and Vanderbilt intercepted him twice without committing a turnover of its own.

That minus-two turnover margin proved especially damaging in a five-point game.

Russell was Arkansas' most consistent offensive weapon, surpassing 100 yards and scoring his first-quarter touchdown. Jackson added 53 yards and a score on nine carries as the Razorbacks rushed for all three of their touchdowns.

But after Jackson's third-quarter score gave Arkansas a 21-17 lead, the Razorbacks never scored again.

A blocked field goal gave them momentum. A roughing-the-kicker penalty helped give it back. One 56-yard completion put Vanderbilt in position to take the lead, and one final pass breakup kept Arkansas from taking it back.

In a game decided by five points, those few moments were enough.
