Oklahoma Cruises To 3-0 Despite Early Miscues
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: September 14th, 2031

There were a few more bumps along the way than expected, but in the end, the Oklahoma Sooners dispatched the South Carolina Gamecocks with relative ease in their SEC opener for the 2031 season. Despite only building a 21-10 halftime lead, with both Gamecock scores coming off Markelle Nickey interceptions, the Sooners buckled down in the second half, outscoring South Carolina 23-0 to close out the game.

Early on, it was the Isaac Adcock show as the running back scored two rushing touchdowns, then secured his third touchdown on an electric punt return to give Oklahoma a 21-7 lead. Attempting to drive for last-minute points, Nickey threw his second interception of the contest at midfield. South Carolina was unable to turn the mistake into more than a field goal in what would be their final scoring opportunity.

The injury to kicker Ty Dexter reared it's head early in the game as well, adding to the Sooners' first half miscues. A 35-yard field goal attempt in the first quarter went awry, forcing Nickey to throw a desperation ball on fourth-and-seven early in the second quarter, leading to his first interception and eventually, the Gamecocks' only touchdown in the contest.

In the end, Oklahoma's defense snuffed out any hope on the Gamecocks sideline, sacking quarterback Titus Fair eight times and holding the Gamecocks offense to a meager 201 yards in the contest by the time of the final whistle.

Question One - James McDavid (OU Daily): "Coach Leon, you said pre-game that while Marvin Honeycutt had kicking experience, you'd likely eschew any kicking opportunities unless they were necessary. Then, you went out and had him kick six extra points and attempt a field goal. Was the pregame talk more to keep the Gamecocks guessing, or were you unsure yourself how Honeycutt would do kicking in a live game?"

Armando Leon: "A little of both, James. Marvin hit some kicks in practice on Friday, but nothing definitive. I told him we'd give him a chance on PATs and field goals, if needed, before we completely nixed them from the game plan. The PATs weren't impressive, but they went through the uprights and that's all that matters. The field goal? Eh, different story and that's why you saw us not attempt another one. I wish we could have that interception stricken from Nick's stat line; it was more of an arm punt than anything. We aren't the only team to suffer an unfortunate injury and we won't be the last, you adjust and carry on."

Question Two - Meg Semental (SEC Network): "Dillon Slye has struggled running between the tackles as a primary back this season and in this contest we saw him line up in the slot a majority of the time. Is that a game-by-game adjustment, or should we expect to see more Isaac Adcock and Tyler Ryder in the backfield, with Dillon out wide?"

Armando Leon: "Part of what made Dill so explosive last year, when healthy, was his ability to do both at a high level. I think having him solely be a running back is underselling his value. We tried it, it didn't work. Good teams don't bash their head into a wall when something doesn't work, you adjust and keep moving. I'd expect to see a lot more Tyler Ryder and Isaac Adcock in the backfield, with Dill filling in a variety of ways, going forward."

Question Three - Lester Uphill (The Daily Gamecock): "Your defense has been smothering quarterbacks to start the season, already racking up 18 sacks in just three games. Who do you attribute that success to and more importantly, is it sustainable?"

Armando Leon: "Cole Leo, without a doubt. He's the one who gets everything moving. He can handle a double team with the best of them and still split it to push the pocket. Once he starts getting into the backfield, the quarterback gets jumpy, the line starts to wiggle, and everyone is firing through. He is hands down the biggest key to our pass rush."

I said last week I'd be happy if the offense met us in the middle, which is exactly what they did this week. Sans the interceptions, and Dillon's sudden inability to run the ball, I'm more than happy with what we put on paper.

The defense continues to suffocate, and occasionally give up the big play, while the offense and special teams are getting enough done to give them a comfortable lead. Like I said, if Nick can stop this sudden desire to throw interceptions, we're more than golden. I will say, the last two weeks haven't been against the stoutest opponents, but you can only play who they put in front of you.

Next week against Oregon will tell us just how talented this team really is. If we can keep the momentum going and generate another blowout victory, the gravy train will roll right back to Atlanta, Georgia.

2031 Week Four Preview - #24 Oregon (2-0) @ #1 Oklahoma (3-0)
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: September 19th, 2031

Oklahoma and Oregon will face off for the third consecutive season in what has become a statement-making game for Armando Leon since his arrival in Norman. For those that don't remember, Lanning was the consensus first choice—I'll eat crow here, I was in the majority—to replace Brent Venables and the hiring of Leon was met with some skepticism by the fan base. The back-and-forth between fans of the program ushered in an agreement between the organizations on a four-year home-and-home series to put the two coaches, whose careers will likely be intertwined for some time, against each other.

In the past two seasons, Leon has made sure to prove who was ultimately the better choice, sporting a 2-0 record against Oregon and outscoring Lanning's crew 96-28 in the process. We'll get with Leon, after the graphic of course, to see how he intends to make it 3-0 against Lanning along with the mounting injuries in the latest "Schooner Scoop."

Schooner Scoop

BT: "Two years and two dominating wins. Do you still carry a chip on your shoulder against Lanning about the drama surrounding your hiring?"

AL: "Not at all, Boone. And lucky for you, I don't hold it against anyone else either. Lanning did what was best for him, no harm there. I'm just committed to continuing to reward the faith Roger Denny had in me by proving each and every week why, in the long run, I was without a doubt, the best option for this proud program."

BT: "That sounds an awful lot like a chip, Armando, but I'll take your word for it. Nickey came back to earth a little bit against South Carolina this week, but what's more troubling to me is the sudden rash of interceptions. What have you and Coach Riley talked about to rein him in a bit?"

AL: "Let me be clear, there is no reigning in. Nick has free rein to fire away. We trust his decision making, as a team, and on the off-chance he misfires, the defense is ready to pick him up. That's how this works. We want him being aggressive and pushing the ball. If we turn into a dink-and-dunk offense, it just makes us easier to defend. You don't love interceptions, but you understand they're a necessary evil to push the ball downfield."

BT: "Last question, injuries are starting to pile up. We saw them affect the kicking game last week, but now Isaac Adcock is on the shelf as well, one game after he electrified the Palace with a trio of touchdowns. You said after last week's game you view Dillon Slye as more of a situational back. Does that plan change with Adcock on the shelf?"

AL: "Tyler Ryder was recruited for a reason, Boone. He's that Terrance Butcher type of gash them up the middle and wear them down type of back. He'll be getting the start tomorrow, because he's earned it. Dill has his role and will continue to provide a necessary spark in a variety of ways. But Ty is going to be the bell cow going forward."

You don't love to see a guy get hurt, but I'll be honest—I'm excited to see this offense with Tyler Ryder getting a full run. We've been missing that this season, a dude that can just barrel inside and get chunks of yardage. Dillon is slippery, Isaac can wow you with the big play. But just as many times, they get dragged down for no-gain, or a loss, and you wonder what happened.

I'm optimistically hopeful Tyler Ryder can turn that around.

But, even if he doesn't, I think Leon has enough of a chip on his shoulder—even if he doesn't want to admit it—that he doesn't let the Sooners lose this game.

Oregon Stuns Oklahoma Behind Nickey's Three Interceptions
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: September 20th, 2031

For the first time in nearly two years, the Oklahoma Sooners have lost. And they have only themselves to blame.

Three first half turnovers helped the Oregon Ducks overcome an early 14-0 deficit, as they rattled off 24 straight points before Markelle Nickey shook off his first two interceptions to throw a second touchdown pass to JaMichael Buggs as the first half wound to a close.

After getting gashed for nearly 300 yards in the first half, albeit snagging a late interception that set up Nickey's last-second touchdown, the Oklahoma secondary stiffened in the third quarter. Oregon was able to march the length of the field to open up the second half, but after taking a 31-21 lead, Pat Maijeh threw back-to-back interceptions to freshman sensation Quincy Enagbare that allowed Oklahoma to take a surprising 35-31 lead prior to the fourth quarter.

It appeared that Oklahoma would survive another messy performance, that is until Markelle Nickey severely under threw a go-route to Dillon Booker—who had two steps on his man—causing the speedy receiver to slow down and allow Zach Schell to snag his second interception.

With a final gift, Pat Maijeh made it count, hitting tight end Tye Golladay on a three yard touchdown pass to take the lead for good.

Oklahoma would have one last opportunity, but three straight incompletions by Nickey spelled the end of any comeback hopes as the Sooners win streak died with a whimper.

Armando Leon and Dan Lanning met at midfield and talked at length before heading to the locker room. Sooners head coach Armando Leon declined to attend the teams post-game press conference, a move that many expect to draw a hefty fine from the SEC.

Markelle Nickey, who did meet with reporters, said he "has to be better" for this team to reach their goals. "Three interceptions just won't get it done," said the sophomore quarterback bluntly.

2031 Week Four Preview - #8 Auburn (4-1) @ #7 Oklahoma (3-1)
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: October 3rd, 2031

It's been a long time since the Oklahoma Sooners took the field preparing to avoid losing a second-consecutive game, but that's exactly where the two-time defending National Champions find themselves after their surprising 38-35 loss in Norman to the Oregon Ducks two weeks ago.

The Sooners will not get to rest on their laurels, however, as the eighth-ranked Auburn Tigers invade The Palace on the Prairie as the calendar turns to October.

We will catch up with Coach Armando Leon after the break to find out exactly where he was after the loss to Oregon, how Markelle Nickey needs to refocus, and the tall task facing his defense in the latest "Schooner Scoop."

Schooner Scoop

BT: "Alright, Coach. I think we were all a little shocked at the loss to Oregon. I mean, the streak had to end eventually, but even with the early turnovers, once Q grabbed back-to-back interceptions it seemed like we would find a way once again. However, the more puzzling part was your sudden Invisible Man act after the game, eschewing the post-game press conference. Was it simple frustration at the loss, a prior commitment, or something else that prompted the sudden departure?"

AL: "Like you said, Boone, the streak had to end eventually. Not to discredit Dan, but I think it was a bit of "high on our own supply." We had survived scares and sloppy games, so we all felt like once Q stepped up we were going to cruise to the finish. Then we didn't. And I'll own that, front and center. There were some fundamental changes I could have made during that fourth quarter that I simply thought we wouldn't need. I spent a considerable amount of time talking to Dan on the field after, but I didn't want to make the loss about me. I knew how the post-game questions would go, how my answers would seem in the moment. I'm not naive to the narrative that I'm a sore loser, or winner most of the time, so rather than take the attention away from the game, I opted to pay the fine, stew on it for a few weeks, and come back refocused and ready to put it behind us."

BT: "Speaking of adjustments, what changes do you want to see from the offense? Because, two weeks in a row now Markelle Nickey has been bitten by the interception bug. Surely, the offense needs to find an antidote for that in order to avoid a repeat of that performance."

AL: "Better execution, period. And that goes for the entire offense. Receivers need to run better routes, Nick needs to make better throws, the offensive line needs to hold up in protection better. But most importantly, play calling has to improve. I know we're running the Air Raid, and I signed up for that, but when it's not working, let's lean on the talent we do have performing. Tyler Ryder had a great game in his first start, yet in the fourth quarter we only gave him the ball three times. Isaac is still hurt, but Dill and Ty are more than capable of providing sparks themselves. If we can do a better job of putting ourselves in positive positions on second and third down, we'll be a lot better off. But facing third-and-long for 85% of our attempts? That's asking for trouble."

BT: "Last one, Coach. It was an up-and-down game for the secondary against Oregon. On one hand, three interceptions. On the other? They gave up 425 passing yards and a pair of long touchdowns. What has to happen against one of the best quarterbacks in the SEC to keep from the newest streak being a losing one?"

AL: "Not to sound like a broken record, but execution. We lulled ourselves to sleep thinking we could just turn it on whenever we wanted. Q nabbed a few picks, the defense started firing off the ball different. All looked right. Then Pat Maijeh scrambled for 15 yards and the defense lost all its swagger. That can't happen. We can't think we have the game in the bag, then fold the minute we face some adversity. We've got a lot of young players in key positions, and that is part of that. But we simply have to do better. I don't care if we're up by 1 or 100, I want to see the same intensity from the first snap to the last. Or they'll be finding themselves watching the game in a hurry."

Listen, I know the loss to Oregon was a bit of a surprise. And Coach Leon vacating the premises before the post-game felt off. On top of that, we've had two weeks to stew in it. But let's put this in perspective, ladies and gentlemen.

This is the SECOND loss of Leon's career at Oklahoma. He's lost as many games as he's won championships, folks. What are we even talking about here.

You want to be mad about the way we lost? I get that. It felt too much like the Riley era...go figure? But before we crucify Garrett for acting like Lincoln, let's give him a moment to breathe.

Leon is undefeated coming off a loss in his career and I've got to believe that he spent the last two weeks in the lab, ready to get back to winining.

Oklahoma Roars Back With Emphatic Win Over Auburn
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: October 4th, 2031

The Oklahoma Sooners wanted to prove to the Sooner faithful that the loss to Oregon two weeks ago was a mere bump in the road, not a sign of a growing trend.

Mission accomplished.

Oklahoma put their foot to the Auburn Tigers' throat early and never let up in a 59-7 rout. Markelle Nickey was the sharpest he's been all season—despite already having an eight touchdown game on his resume—with 320 passing yards and five touchdowns while the running back was a two-headed monster of Dillon Slye (178 yards) and Tyler Ryder (91 yards) as the duo combined for three touchdowns in the rout.

Despite the lopsided final score, it was only 7-0 after the first quarter. Oklahoma marched right down the field after Tyler Ryder exploded for a 55-yard touchdown to open the game. Freshman sensation Quincy Enagbare forced a fumble on the next possession, but Oklahoma suffered a quick three-and-out with the extra possession. A pair of punts would end the first quarter.

Then, the floodgates opened.

Markelle Nickey threw three second-quarter touchdowns; then following a late interception by Robert Chester, pushed the Sooners into field goal range with just enough time left for Ty Dexter, whose presence was greatly missed over the last two weeks, to trot onto the field and lace the field goal.

The only bright spot for the Auburn Tigers came late in the fourth quarter as backup QB Jamie Riggins found fellow freshman Branden Canaday on a 78-yard prayer that was the only prayer answered for Auburn in the contest.

After the game, Coach Leon addressed criticism about missing the post-game presser after the loss to Oregon while also discussing rumors he gave Garrett Riley firm instructions in the offensive game planning over the bye week.

Question One - Meg Semental (SEC Network): "Coach Leon. The criticism of your decision to skip the post-game press conference after the loss to Oregon has been under heavy scrutiny for two weeks now, yet you have only addressed it with Boone Tillman of the Sooners' own publication. Can you walk us through that decision and what you have to say to those doubting your humility in the moment?"

Armando Leon: "It was a close game. You hate to lose those types of games. If I wasn't fired up, people would say I didn't care. They'd point to my past, say I'd already made it, and write it off as me mailing it in. I talked to Dan extensively after the game; I told him I was going to skip the presser and explained why. He thanked me. Because at the end of the day, neither of us wanted to make that story about us. We wanted it to remain about the men on that field that played their asses off two weeks ago. Dan and I may have had a bit of a rivalry a few years ago, with how things went down, but that's just because we're competitors. We can see past that. That's all the decision was about, making sure the right narrative was being talked about. If that meant me falling on the sword? I've suffered worse wounds in my time."

Question Two: Chuck Moogle (The Auburn Plainsman): "Kona Vitale came into this contest as not only the highest-rated QB in the SEC, but a Heisman favorite. You held him to under 150 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. What changed from last week, where quite frankly, Pat Maijeh had a career day against your defense?"

Armando Leon: "You gotta play with heart, Chuck. We were going through the motions before thinking we could flip a switch and win the game. Sometimes you need to lose, to remind you that you can. These guys played inspired football tonight. And I knew they would, because that's how they practiced for the last two weeks. Like a team that had tasted defeat and didn't want to do it again. Kona is a great quarterback, but we simply played like we wanted it more."

Question Three - James McDavid (OU Daily): "There are rumors circling around Norman that you had a heavy hand in this weeks offensive game plan. Is there any truth to that notion?"

Armando Leon: "Last I checked, I was the head coach, right? I should be involved in all of the game plans. There are some things that we did today that I explicitly highlighted during the week, yes. But that isn't any different than any other coach, for any other team. I wanted an emphasis on taking smaller plays to set up the big plays and not trying to get a chunk play on every possession. That's what good teams do. They take feedback from each other and adapt. I didn't force Garrett to do anything. We collaborated as a team, period."

Coach Leon hit it on the head, folks. Frankly, since the Nebraska game Markelle Nickey has been slinging it like no tomorrow. I get it, he had a great performance and wanted to build on it. But I think he, of all people, needed that reality check. You can't keep throwing it away and survive.

Today I saw a quarterback who learned from his mistakes and was content to take the underneath stuff until the defense gave him an opening deep. I can't say for sure that lesson will stick after a big win like this, but I hope it does. Because that changes the game for us.

I know some of those die-hard old-school fans are going to say "RUN THE DANG BALL" after seeing Ryder and Slye chew up over 250 yards, but that was only because the offense was humming as a unit. If Nick is still heaving it deep every other play, those running lanes aren't there. We played complementary football and that's what got us this dub.

I just hope Leon and the rest of the staff took notes, because this is how we'll have to play to keep the goal of being the second three-peat in NCAA history.
