Stanford dominates Cougars in Pop-Tarts Bowl
Earl Nienhuis threw for three touchdowns, Anthony Masifilo rushed in for two and Paul Garrison picked off BYU quarterback Oscar Reiff twice for a 45-10 win over No. 20 BYU on Saturday in the Pop-Tarts Bowl.

The Cardinal dominated from the opening kickoff on, scoring on their first drive on a touchdown pass to Rodney Cookus. Garrison would get two interceptions, the first coming off a deflection and the last one coming on an attempted deep shot into the endzone, in the first half to give Stanford the 28-0 lead with two minutes left in the half.

BYU would score a touchdown before the end of the half and Nienhuis' final heave into the endzone prior to halftime would be intercepted in what would be BYU's only bright spot of the evening.

Nienhuis finished with 244 yards, completing 77 percent of his passes in what could turn out to be his final game as a Cardinal. The redshirt junior is mulling a decision to enter the draft where he is considered to be a borderline Day 2 prospect. Nienhuis played the entire game before coming off for the final drive. As did other key starters such as Masifilo and Cookus, who played their final games as seniors.

"It was important for us to get this tenth win," Cookus said, "Obviously, the season didn't go as planned or as we wanted but making sure we got that tenth win, another season in double-digits, that's building a strong legacy and foundation for seasons to come."

Stanford head coach Bubba Mack announced his retirement Thursday night following the Cardinal’s Pop-Tarts Bowl victory over BYU.

Mack, 60, steps away after eight seasons as a head coach, including the last five at Stanford, with an overall record of 87-25, a national championship, and conference titles at both Stanford and Kennesaw State.

This season’s Pop-Tarts Bowl win over BYU capped another double-digit-win campaign and marked Mack’s final game on the sideline.

“This game, these players, and this journey have meant everything to me,” Mack said during his postgame press conference. “But I know it’s time. I’ve given this sport everything I have, and now I’m ready to give that same energy to my family and the next chapter of my life.”

Mack leaves behind a résumé that rapidly elevated him into national prominence. He first broke through at Kennesaw State, where he transformed the Owls into a Conference USA champion and College Football Playoff participant before leaving for Stanford. At Stanford, Mack revitalized a program that had struggled through years of instability following the departures of David Shaw and Jim Harbaugh-era success.

Under Mack, the Cardinal won an ACC championship, reached multiple College Football Playoff appearances, and captured a national title behind a physical rushing attack and dominant offensive line play that became the program’s trademark.
