Pittsburgh Tabs Offensive Innovator Nathan Scheelhaase As 17th Head Coach In Franchise History

Image

Pittsburgh, PA. - On Monday, the Pittsburgh Steelers officially announced the hiring of Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Nathan Scheelhaase as the 17th head coach in franchise history, following in the iconic footsteps of Mike Tomlin, Bill Cowher, and Chuck Noll as a first-time head coach taking over one of the NFL's most storied franchises.

The difference? He's bringing an offensive ingenuity to the Steel City that his predecessors lacked.

"It's been a common complaint in Pittsburgh for a long time, and while the hiring of Brian Daboll alleviated that concern in Tomlin's final two years, the fact remains that offensive creativity has been lacking in Pittsburgh for decades," said one longtime fan of the organization.

Not anymore.

At just 37 years old, Scheelhaase represents a new generation of offensive minds shaped by the Sean McVay coaching tree. After serving as Iowa State's offensive coordinator and passing game coordinator from 2018-2024, Scheelhaase made the jump to the NFL as the Rams' passing game coordinator, ultimately earning a promotion to offensive coordinator in 2027.

The results were immediate and spectacular.

Under Scheelhaase's play-calling, quarterback Justin Fields enjoyed the best season of his career—throwing for over 4,000 yards and 30+ touchdowns while leading the Rams to a 13-4 record and NFC Championship Game appearance. Fields, who had bounced around the NFL for years and even spent a forgettable stint in Pittsburgh as a backup, suddenly soared to third place in MVP voting.

It was a transformation that caught the attention of everyone around the league, including the Steelers.

"What Nathan did with Justin Fields was remarkable," GM Omar Khan said. "Justin had all the physical tools but struggled with consistency and decision-making his entire career. One year with Nathan, and suddenly he's a top-three MVP candidate. That's not an accident. That's elite coaching and scheme design."

Scheelhaase's offense is predicated on motion, misdirection, and maximizing quarterback mobility. His RPO-heavy attack creates favorable matchups while keeping defenses off-balance with tempo changes and creative play-action concepts. For a Steelers team built around dual-threat MVP Anthony Richardson, it's a perfect philosophical fit.

"This is a great honor, and one I do not take lightly," Scheelhaase said at his introductory press conference. "What Mike Tomlin built here is legendary, and I hope I can even begin to measure up to the outstanding legacy he and all of the Steelers' great coaches of the past have left behind."

Scheelhaase is not coming to Pittsburgh alone. The Steelers moved quickly to finalize a veteran staff for the young head coach, surrounding him with experienced coordinators who have been in the fire before.

Former Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor agreed to a three-year deal to join the Steelers as offensive coordinator, replacing Brian Daboll, who departed to become offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings under new head coach Teryl Austin.

Taylorbrings a wealth of experience and a track record of developing elite quarterbacks. During his tenure in Cincinnati (2019-2025), Taylor led the Bengals to Super Bowl LVI, built one of the NFL's most explosive offenses around Joe Burrow, and consistently ranked in the top 10 in scoring.

Like Scheelhaase, Taylor is a Sean McVay disciple, having served as the Rams' quarterbacks coach during their 2018 Super Bowl run. His offensive philosophy—emphasizing quick-game concepts, play-action bootlegs, and creating mismatches through formation versatility—aligns perfectly with Scheelhaase's vision.

"Zac brings the perspective of knowing what it takes to compete on a year-by-year basis in what I feel is the best conference in the NFL, the AFC North," Khan said. "Nate and I spoke at length about the coordinators we had in mind, and we both felt that Taylor's knowledge of the conference and comfortability with his own system made the hire a slam dunk."

Taylor will handle day-to-day offensive game planning and play-calling responsibilities, allowing Scheelhaase to focus on broader head coaching duties while maintaining input on offensive strategy. The pairing gives Pittsburgh two creative offensive minds who can collaborate on building an attack tailored to Richardson's unique skill set.

"Anthony is special," Taylor said. "I've faced him twice a year for the last two seasons, and he's a nightmare to defend. The things we can do with his ability to run, throw deep, and process information quickly—it's going to be fun."

For defensive coordinator, the Steelers are turning to a familiar face and one of the NFL's most respected defensive minds: Brian Flores.

Flores spent the 2022 season as the Steelers' linebackers coach after being dismissed as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins (2019-2021). Flores then rebuilt his reputation as the Minnesota Vikings' defensive coordinator from 2023-2027, consistently fielding top-five defenses and earning widespread praise for his innovative blitz packages and ability to disguise coverages.

This past season, Flores' Minnesota defense ranked second in the NFL in points allowed and led the league in takeaways. His aggressive, multiple-front scheme confounds opposing quarterbacks while maximizing the talents of edge rushers and coverage linebackers—a perfect fit for Pittsburgh's personnel.

"Brian is regarded as a brilliant and capable defensive mind, someone who believes in what he coaches and preaches," Khan said. "It's no surprise that his defenses continue to set the standard in the NFL year after year. He knows how to coach Steeler football, and we're excited for him to add his signature touch to the Steel Curtain."

Flores' return to Pittsburgh drew immediate excitement from the locker room. Longtime Steelers edge rusher and two-time Defensive Player of the Year T.J. Watt tweeted: "LETS GO!!! COACH B IS BACK IN THE BUILDING."

Flores will inherit a defense anchored by elite talent—Watt, linebacker Patrick Queen, cornerback Joey Porter Jr., and safety Ji'Ayir Brown—and is expected to implement an aggressive, pressure-heavy scheme that builds on the physical identity Steelers defenses are known for while adding more exotic looks and coverage disguises.

"The foundation is already here," Flores said. "We've got elite playmakers on all three levels. My job is to put them in position to make game-changing plays and create as much chaos as possible for opposing offenses."

Throughout the extensive hour-long introductory press conference, Khan, team president Art Rooney II, and Scheelhaase laid out a clear vision for the Steelers' future.

"We're going to keep our aggressive, physical identity on defense, first and foremost," Scheelhaase said. "But offensively, we're really going to get creative. With Anthony Richardson's athleticism and the talent we have at the skill positions—DK Metcalf, Ryan Williams, Quinshon Judkins—the sky is the limit.

"I understand the expectations are sky-high. This is a team that boasts the reigning two-time MVP and is coming off back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. But I embrace it. It's the type of job opportunity that comes along once in a lifetime. And I can't wait to get to work."

Scheelhaase emphasized that while the offensive philosophy will evolve, the core principles that made the Steelers successful under Tomlin—toughness, accountability, and an unwavering commitment to winning—will remain unchanged.

"We're not reinventing the wheel," Scheelhaase said. "We're taking what works and making it better. The standard is still the standard."

## The Challenge Ahead

The Steelers face a daunting offseason as they navigate significant salary cap constraints. Key players like linebacker Payton Wilson, edge rusher Alex Highsmith, and cornerback Marlon Humphrey are all slated for new contracts, and difficult decisions loom.

With recent extensions already handed out to Richardson, running back Quinshon Judkins, and center Zach Frazier, Pittsburgh is facing a cap crunch that will test Khan's roster-building acumen. Scheelhaase acknowledged the challenges but expressed confidence in the front office's ability to maintain a championship-caliber roster.

"Omar and his staff have done an incredible job building this team," Scheelhaase said. "I trust that we'll figure out the cap situation and keep our core together. My job is to coach the players we have and get the most out of them."

The hiring of Scheelhaase marks a significant philosophical shift for a franchise that has historically leaned on defense and conservative offensive schemes. For the first time in decades, the Steelers will be led by an offensive-minded head coach with a cutting-edge approach to the game.

The pressure is immense. Pittsburgh expects to compete for championships immediately, and Scheelhaase will be judged on his ability to deliver Lombardi Trophies, not just exciting offense.

But if his work with Fields is any indication, the Steelers may have found the perfect coach to unlock Richardson's full potential and usher in a new golden era of football in the Steel City.

"This is just the beginning," Scheelhaase said as he concluded his press conference. "We're going to work our tails off, compete at the highest level, and bring another championship to this city. That's the plan. That's the standard. And we won't settle for anything less."

The Standard is the Standard. Now it's Scheelhaase's job to uphold it.

Now that they have the man patrolling the sideline, the real work is about to begin.

Previewing Steelers Crucial Roster Decisions Before Free Agency

Image

Pittsburgh, PA. - Now that Mike Tomlin's replacement is officially in house, the real work begins: figuring out how to construct a roster after the cap constraints of Anthony Richardson's massive contract extension officially hits the books.

With just $4.7 million available in cap — after accounting for rookie salaries — the Steelers have virtually no room to work out extensions for any of their remaining free agents. That is, unless they plan on parting with someone currently on the roster ot make room.

Potential Cap Casualties

HB Kaleb Johnson
Current Contract: 1 Year / $1.32M
Potential Savings: $1.07M

Kaleb Johnson is the most obvious cap casualty in the Steelers building. Last offseason the Steelers traded Jaylen Warren, in a move that netted starting tackle Kelvin Banks Jr, to clear a path for Kaleb Johnson to be the every-down back in Pittsburgh. When the rival Cleveland Browns cut Quinshon Judkins, who eventually signed with Pittsburgh, the belief was Judkins was an insurance policy on Johnson, not his replacement. By Week 6 however, Judkins was receiving the majority of carries behind his explosive production and Johnson's own fumble problems. Kaleb Johnson only logged 7 carries throughout the Steelers four playoff games, and if that wasn't enough evidence that his time in the Steel City was nearing it's end, Judkins's own extension mid-season certainly did. While the saving from moving on from Johnson is modest, every dollar is crucial for the Steelers this offseason.

KR KaVontae Turpin
Current Contract: 1 Year / $6.69M
Potential Savings: $3.89M

KaVontae Turpin was everything the Steelers expected and more two years ago when he originally signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency on a one-year deal. The Steelers were so pleased with Turpin's production that they signed him to a two-year contract last offseason, but the return on investment was significantly lower in year two. Turpin only returned one kickoff for a touchdown in 2027 and was not nearly the threat of years past. With a roster of explosive athletes and Turpin's diminishing impact, cutting the now 32-year old return specialist is expected.

TE Pat Freiermuth
Current Contract: 1 Year / $10.5M
Potential Savings: $8.39M

Perhaps the most noteworthy addition to this list, the idea of cutting Freiermuth would certainly raise displeasure from the Steelers faithful. He's been a consistent contributor to the Steelers since being drafted in 2021 out of Penn State and the cries of "MUTH" after every big play shows the love the fanbase has for him. But the fact that you only heard that cry 14 times last season, the lowest reception total of Freiermuth's career, shows his diminishing role in the Steelers offense that prioritized getting the ball to their glut of receivers and backs, relegating Freiermuth to a glorified extra lineman. The caveat is that the Rams utilized the tight-end more than any other team in the NFL over the last two years, coinciding with newly hired HC Nate Scheelhaase's promotion to OC for the Rams. If he views Freiermuth as critical to the Steelers offensive plans, he may be safe. But with a potential savings of $8.9 million, even that may not save the longtime Steelers tight end.

FS Alohi Gilman
Current Contract: 1 Year / $6.87M
Potential Savings: $2.87M

Alohi Gilman has started every game at free safety for the Steeles since being signed in free agency following his 2025 season with the Los Angeles Charges and has played solid, if not spectacular. He's constantly around the ball and while he doesn't have the eye popping impact of players like Ji'ayir Brown or Isaiah Simmons, the fact that he is always around the ball speaks volumes. But, with former Duke safety Trey Moore continuing to develop and other pressing needs, the Steelers could replace Gilman with either Moore, or utilize one of their draft selections to nab his replacement. Gilman wouldn't be the biggest loss from the Steelers top rated defense last season and that alone makes his release a high probability.

Looming Contract Decisions

LB Payton Wilson
Asking Price: 4 Years / $47.1M

Outside of Patrick Queen and TJ Watt, Wilson may be the most important member of the Steelers front seven. The former NC State linebacker remains one of the fastest players on the Steelers roster, defense or not, and has the instincts required to clean up plays sideline-to-sideline. The 28-year old linebacker was 3rd on the Steelers with 98 tackles, 2nd for TFL's with 30, and 3rd in sacks with 9.5. That is the kind of production you can't replace overnight and why Payton Wilson's value is so high. Of the three key defenders that are impending free-agents for the Steelers, Wilson is the one they are pushing to re-sign, despite the presence of former LSU LB Harold Perkins Jr on the roster, on a rookie scale contract to boot. While Perkins replacing Wilson is the fallback option for the Steelers, many around the organization are questioning if the smart move would be to move Patrick Queen while he still has value, sliding Wilson to MLB, then utilizing Perkins Jr at Wilson's WILL LB position. Regardless of where Wilson lines up, one thing is clear. He's going to get paid.

EDGE Alex Highsmith
Asking Price: 3 Years / $35.7M

Alex Highsmith's asking price may not be exorbitant compared to the production, but at the wrong side of 30 (32 when the season starts) and TJ Watt already commanding top dollar, the reality is Highsmith will not be donning Black and Gold next season. The signing of former New York Giant Kayvon Thibodeaux last offseason all but confirmed that Highsmith would not be retained beyond 2027. Highsmith won Defensive Player of the Year two year's ago and has quietly tallied 42 sacks over the last three seasons. Wherever Highsmith suits up in 2028, they'll be getting a player that is still a premier pass rusher.

WR Kyler Kasper
Asking Price: 3 Years / $25.4M

Kasper was the darling of the pre-season for the Steelers as the undrafted FA out of Oregon turned in a sparkling campaign, dispelling any worries about lingering injuries from his time in the Pacific Northwest that caused his draft stock to plumet. Sources close to the Steelers said they'd love to keep Kasper's services —a 6'6" WR with speed to take the top off and a versatile weapon in the return game — but the fact is, paying 8 million a year to at best a 4th-string wide receiver and return specialist simply isn't in the Steelers budget.

CB Marlon Humphrey
Asking Price: 1 Year / $17.3M

Marlon Humphrey was brought in last season from the rival Baltimore Ravens to help solidify the secondary alongside Joey Porter Jr and Jalen Ramsey and while his impact on the Steelers defense was undeniable, the simple fact is the Steelers no longer have the capital to retain Humphrey, unless he significantly lowers his asking price.

T Broderick Jones
Asking Price: 2 Years / $30M

Jones was drafted in 2023 with the 14th overall pick with the expectation to help solidify the Steelers offensive line and never totally lived up to the billing. The Steelers signed Troy Brown to a big contract two years ago, moving Jones into a super-utility role along the line. When Brown was forced to retire due to a lumbar injury, the Steelers did not return Jones to the starting lineup, instead trading Jaylen Warren for Kelvin Banks Jr. Those moves speak volumes about how the Steelers organization feels about the Georgia product. Expect Jones to don a new jersey next season.

G Mason McCormick
Asking Price: 2 Years / $20.7M

Mason McCormick is one of three Steelers lineman drafted in the 2024 NFL Draft, alongside T Troy Fautanu and C Zach Frazier, but is the odd-man out in this situation. McCormick was tied for giving up the most sacks on the line last season with 5 and has always been just a tad slower than what the Steelers prefer at guard. McCormick is interested in returning to the Steelers and while a reunion isn't out of the question, McCormick would need to significantly lower his asking price if he is going to be back for a 5th-season in the Steel City.

Option Decisions

DT Derrick Harmon
T Kelvin Banks Jr

Expect the Pittsburgh Steelers to quicky accept both Harmon and Banks Jr's 5th-year options. Both played a pivotal role in 2027 and with each only carrying a $1.1 million dollar cost, it's a no brainer for the Steelers to retain their services.

Other Pending Free Agents

MLB Jerome Baker: Asking - 1 Year / 3.75M
WR Roman Wilson: Asking - 2 Years / $11.2M
TE AJ Barner: Asking - 2 Years / 8.3M
SS Isaiah Simmons: Asking - 2 Years / $7.5M
DT DJ Reader: Asking - 1 Year / $14.1M
G Isaiah Wynn: Asking - 1 Year / $3.74M
G Max Mitchell: Asking - 1 Year / $3.84M
P Corliss Waitman: Asking - 1 Year / $1.8M

Not sure if I missed it but who won SB MVP? And how do you feel on Nathan Scheelhaase?

losing the big game sucks, but is what it is. I had planned on Tomlin retiring regardless so would have liked to send him out on top, but

the game gave it to Ja'Waun Bentley for recording a sack and interception, but I retconed it to be Jalen Hurts with 375 yards and a nearly perfect 2nd half.

Excited about Scheelhaase. I'm using a generated coach with the Rams playbook, so I can kind of build out his abilities to fit my playstyle so should be fun

GM Omar Khan Gets Creative, Frees Up $38 Million In Cap Room

Image

Pittsburgh, PA. - Pittsburgh Steelers GM Omar Khan didn't earn the nickname "Khanartist" for nothing, and he's back at it again.

With the Steelers up against the salary cap with only $4.7 million in space before free agency, Khan orchestrated a series of veteran contract restructures to create financial flexibility—and it all started with the unquestioned leader of the defense.
Edge rusher T.J. Watt agreed to restructure his deal, converting base salary into signing bonus and spreading the cap hit across future seasons. The move freed up immediate cap space while keeping Watt's overall compensation intact.

"We're on a mission here to make it back and win another Super Bowl," Watt said after the news broke. "Why would I not sacrifice a little bit of money now to help keep key guys and build this roster?"

Watt's leadership set the tone, and soon other veteran stars followed suit. Wide receiver DK Metcalf, linebacker Patrick Queen, edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, cornerback Joey Porter Jr., and even two-time MVP Anthony Richardson all agreed to restructures, converting portions of their 2028 base salaries into prorated bonuses.

"That's what real leadership looks like—looking at the big picture and being unselfish to help keep this club competitive," first-year head coach Nathan Scheelhaase said.

The collective restructures transformed Pittsburgh's salary cap situation overnight. The Steelers went from just $4.7 million in available space to nearly $39 million—enough to be aggressive in free agency and address key roster needs.

"Now, we can get to work," Khan said with a smile.

The restructures buy the Steelers short-term flexibility but will create larger cap hits in future years when the prorated bonuses accelerate. It's a calculated gamble—maximize the current championship window at the risk of mortgaging future flexibilty.

For now, though, Khan has worked his magic once again. The Khanartist strikes back.
