No. 16 UNLV Rides Second-Quarter Barrage to 45-23 Win Over Nevada

Reno, NV --
For a quarter, it looked like the Battle for the Silver State might turn into a shootout.

Then No. 16 UNLV reminded everyone why it arrived with a number next to its name.

The Rebels exploded for 24 points in the second quarter and rode a punishing rushing attack to a 45-23 victory over Nevada on Saturday, seizing control of the rivalry game before halftime and never allowing the Wolf Pack back within striking distance.

UNLV turned a 10-7 first-quarter deficit into a 31-13 halftime lead with one of its most complete stretches of football this season.

Nevada struck early. After UNLV opened the scoring on a 53-yard touchdown pass from Treston McMillan to Taeshaun Lyons, the Wolf Pack answered with a 3-yard touchdown run by Maeauliaki Smith and a 43-yard field goal from Diego Napolitano to take a 10-7 lead late in the first quarter.

That advantage was short-lived.

McMillan found Lyons again early in the second quarter, this time from 8 yards out, to put the Rebels back in front. From there, UNLV’s ground game took over.

Richard Rusnak broke free for a 31-yard touchdown run midway through the quarter, and sophomore Kamran Williams powered in from 8 yards out to extend the margin. Rickie Rosenfels added a 37-yard field goal in the final minutes of the half, capping a 24-point outburst that flipped the game decisively in UNLV’s favor.

Williams was the centerpiece of the Rebels’ offensive control. The sophomore tailback carried 19 times for 132 yards and two touchdowns, earning Player of the Game honors. His second score, a 4-yard run early in the fourth quarter, pushed the lead to 45-16 and effectively sealed the outcome.

McMillan was efficient and opportunistic, throwing three touchdown passes — two to Lyons and a 9-yard strike to DeAngelo Irvin Jr. in the third quarter — as UNLV consistently capitalized on scoring opportunities.

Nevada managed points but struggled to match touchdowns with touchdowns. Napolitano connected on field goals from 44 and 51 yards in the second and third quarters, respectively, and Smith added a 16-yard touchdown pass to Cooper Perry in the fourth. But the Wolf Pack could not keep pace once UNLV established its rhythm.

No. 9 Hawai‘i Clinches Perfect Pac-12 Season, Tops Utah State 41-27

Honolulu, HI -- No. 9 Hawai‘i capped a historic regular season Saturday night, defeating Utah State 41-27 to finish 11-1 overall and a perfect 9-0 in Pac-12 play, punching its ticket to the Pac-12 Championship Game.

The Rainbow Warriors leaned on a fast start and another dynamic outing from quarterback Dermaricus Davis to pull away early and withstand a late Utah State surge at home.

Hawai‘i wasted no time setting the tone. Sean McFarland opened the scoring with a 23-yard field goal midway through the first quarter, and Davis struck late in the period with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Damon Brazill to make it 10-0 after one.

The second quarter belonged entirely to the Rainbow Warriors. Davis found Jackson Harris for a 5-yard touchdown to cap a methodical drive, then added a 10-yard scoring run with under a minute left in the half. Hawai‘i took a commanding 24-0 lead into the break, outclassing Utah State in every phase.

Utah State (3-9, 2-7) showed signs of life in the third quarter when Broc Lowry connected with Ricky Ahumaraeze on a 40-yard touchdown pass. The Aggies’ two-point attempt failed, keeping the margin at 24-6 heading into the fourth.

The final quarter turned into a back-and-forth shootout.

Lowry ignited the Aggies with an electrifying 81-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 24-13. But Hawai‘i responded immediately, as Darrelle Dimke ripped off a 46-yard touchdown run to reestablish control.

McFarland added a 44-yard field goal to push the lead to 34-13 before Utah State struck again on a 46-yard touchdown pass from Lowry to Jesse Watson. Davis answered once more, firing his third touchdown pass of the night — a 15-yarder to Brazill with 2:16 remaining — to effectively seal the game.

Davis accounted for four total touchdowns — three through the air and one on the ground — and guided an offense that scored 24 first-half points and added 17 more in the fourth to close it out. Brazill finished with two touchdown receptions, while Dimke’s long fourth-quarter run served as the decisive blow.

With the win, Hawai‘i completes a second straight unbeaten conference slate and now turns its attention to the Pac-12 Championship Game, where the Rainbow Warriors will look to add another conference crown to an already landmark regular season.

might have to make more conference realignment moves to beef up the PAC. Should we bring back Oregon, Washington, USC and UCLA?
