Saturday, September 21, 2029 | Kenan Memorial Stadium (Chapel Hill, NC)

Week 4 Preview: at North Carolina (2-1, 0-0)

Synopsis
The #1-ranked team in the country is now making their way to Chapel Hill to kick off their final season of ACC competition against the Bill Belichick-led North Carolina Tar Heels, fresh off the heels of a confidence-boosting 34-0 slapping of FCS Sacramento State. After initially stumbling out of the gate with a high octane 42-35 loss to current #18 California to start things off, North Carolina rebounded with a sound 52-17 beat down of James Madison.

Not one to overlook opponents, SMU looks to coast until their Week 6 matchup with Pittsburgh after winning their National Championship game rematch against Alabama, a sound defeat of the Texas Longhorns, and an Iron Skillet beatdown of rival TCU to land at 3-0 behind a pungent run game led by true freshman Dwayne Sowells and an efficient, yet not explosive defensive effort led by senior captain MIKE linebacker Keke Madden.

Belichick, a few years deep into his tenure with the Tar Heels, is hoping that this is the year to right the ship behind behind senior veteran quarterback Eric Eagles and star free safety Sinilau Afalava as his two star players. He'll hope to have the college nation on upset alert against the defending champions. Not to mention the Tar Heels will be continuing this season without star running back Robert Officer, who tore his PCL in the first week of the season.

Bill said his favorite thing about coaching in college is he keeps getting older but the girls stay the same age.

SMU defense swarms Tar Heels, terrorize freshman backup on way to another victory

‣ Quarterback Alonzo Cheeseman has taken a backseat for the most part to SMU's running game experiment. This game? He decided to take things into his own hands./b]

Score

FINAL 1 2 3 4 T
#1 SMU 0 14 0 14 28
North Carolina 3 3 0 6 12

Game Summary

Style points weren't the priority. Control was.

Number 1 SMU turned its ACC opener into a defensive clinic, suffocating North Carolina in a 28-12 victory that showcased the Mustangs' pass rush and emerging backfield depth.

The tone was set early when SMU's front overwhelmed UNC's protection schemes. Senior quarterback Eric Eagles was knocked out of the game in the second quarter after repeated hits, ending a difficult afternoon against a relentless rush.

Freshman backup Matt Bahktiari fared no better.

SMU finished with eight total sacks and four forced fumbles, collapsing the pocket on nearly every obvious passing down. While North Carolina managed to recover all four loose balls, the constant pressure stalled drives and eliminated any chance of rhythm.

On the other side, quarterback Alonzo Cheeseman once again played the role of conductor rather than gunslinger, leading an offense that produced four touchdowns without needing to chase big plays.

The most dynamic element came from true freshman Dwayne Sowells, who continued his breakout campaign with two touchdowns, showing the same burst and vision that made him the story of last wee's rivalry week,.

The 28-12 final wasn't flashy, but it was authoritative - the kind of win that signals depth, discipline, and championship-level defense.

Our offense needs to be more explosive, but our defense has shown out when we needed it thus far.
