Red Wings Scout QMJHL Forward Justin Poirier as Draft Focus Shifts to Wing Depth
October 25, 2023 |
By Ted Kulfan | The Detroit News
BAIE-COMEAU, Quebec - With an eye on strengthening organizational depth at right wing, the Detroit Red Wings have been closely monitoring 17-year-old forward Justin Poirier of the Baie-Comeau Drakkar.
Poirier, a right-shot winger listed at 5-foot-8 and 190 pounds, has drawn attention from scouts for his above-average shooting ability and heavy, compact wrist shot. Despite standing under 5-foot-10, the forward plays with confidence in offensive situations and does not hesitate to release the puck from high-danger areas.
Detroit’s current depth chart at right wing presents both stability and long-term questions.
There is Lucas Raymond, who is viewed as the future face of the franchise and is already becoming an elite star at only 21 years old. Behind Raymond is 34-year-old Patrick Kane, who is discussing a one-year extension with the team but is not likely to be around by 2025. Third is 27-year-old Mason Appleton, a strong player but not someone the Red Wings see as a future star.
The Red Wings lack RW in the developmental league and have an aging defense that will be the focus in free agency.
For Poirier, scouting reports note average puck skills, but it is his finishing ability that stands out. He has a strong wrist shot, above-average shooting, and is a natural scorer.
The primary concern remains size. At 5-foot-8, Poirier would need to rely on speed, timing, and positioning at the professional level. While he is solidly built at 190 pounds, projecting smaller forwards into NHL roles always carries added scrutiny.
The draft remains months away, and evaluations will continue. But as the Red Wings survey their organizational needs, the right wing remains an area to watch, and Poirier’s name is firmly on the radar.

This is doing extremely well man! Love the attention to detail. Sucks that the Atlantic has really surged at the beginning of the season, lots of teams that are going to give you a real challenge to potentially get a playoff spot.
Not too mad at you losing to my Penguins though

Thank you, I'm glad you are enjoying it. This game is extremely fun to play.
Crosby is the only hockey player I used to know so it was fitting that he dominated me.

Macklin Celebrini
I will add him to the scouting report, it looks like he plays center but we can move him to RW and he would be a great fit based on the stats I am seeing. Thanks!

Red Wings Capitalize on Space, Defeat Jets 6-3 at Home
Larkin breaks his drought, scoring his first goal since opening night
November 3, 2023 |
By Ted Kulfan | The Detroit News
Detroit, MI - The Detroit Red Wings wasted little time setting the tone Thursday night, with captain Dylan Larkin scoring just 49 seconds into a 6-3 victory against the Winnipeg Jets at Little Caesars Arena. The goal, Larkin’s first since the season opener, snapped a brief drought and energized a Detroit team that moved the puck crisply and attacked with pace throughout the night.
Winnipeg leaned into a physical approach, delivering heavy hits but often sacrificing defensive positioning in the process. The Red Wings exploited the space repeatedly, moving the puck wing-to-wing in front of the net and finding seams between the last defender and the goaltender. J.T. Compher scored twice — including an empty-netter in the final seconds — while Detroit’s quick puck movement created sustained offensive-zone pressure.
The Jets received two goals from Cole Perfetti to keep the game within reach, but defensive breakdowns proved costly. Detroit's ability to break the line and find space deep in the Jets' area ended up being too much for any real comeback by the visitors.
Mason Appleton had a goal and an assist, Compher had two goals, and Larkin added another assist to go along with his goal. It was Detroit's best offensive performance of the season, with all four lines starting to click in attack.
Detroit took a short East Coast trip after the win, falling to Boston by allowing two goals in the third period, then coming from behind to beat the Islands after falling 2-0 after one. Ending the week with a comfortable home win over the struggling Panthers from Florida.

Getting some good results. Nice to see guys like Alex DeBrincat is still being productive for you. Need to get Larkin going a bit more, but its still early.

I fucked with the Red Wings back in the Yzerman and Federov days, but don't even check out hockey anymore
I will attempt to pop in from time to time for old times sake

I am struggling with center forwards. It might be my soccer background with crosses and working side to side but I miss the middle often.

No worries, hockey and soccer will not be followed by many, I’m cool with that. I really enjoy doing them. I’m sure my basketball one will get more eyes so it’s all good.
