More on this coming but Larkin (89) is the best, L. Raymond (88), A. DeBrincat (87) are the top three. I am working on a more in-depth article that will break down to forwards, defense and goalie. I just had to get a few games in myself to familiarize myself with the players before doing more research and writing.

Newark, New Jersey - Last night's season opener was everything a hockey fan can ask for: early goals, late drama, and a new name to take on the league. The Prudential Center was rocking for New Jersey's home opening game, but it was the visitors taking the early momentum.

Making his NHL debut, Detroit's fourth-round pick, Emmitt Finnie, scored just over the midway point of the first period. Mason Appleton brought the puck past the blue line and found Finnie at the far post for an easy flick in.

Detroit was not able to celebrate long, as three minutes later the scoreboard read 2-1 to the hosts after Jack Hughes scored and then assisted two quick goals.

The game stayed 2-1 until late in the third period when Moritz Seider set up Michael Rasmussen to bring the game level and force overtime.


The three-on-three OT was a thrilling back-and-forth with both sides taking four shots apiece. The deciding goal came with only 16 seconds remaining, and it came from the captain, Dylan Larkin. Young Simon Edvinsson came across the blue line, taking a hard shot that was deflected towards Larkin, who hit his own slap shot into the top corner.

"Clock was getting low, so I thought f*** it, hit the sh*t out of it and see what happens." Larkin laughed after the match.

The opening night win has fans buzzing for Detroit's own home opener in two days against the Lightning.

They were tough, the next game was harder against TB but then the Blue Jackets were pretty easy. I am really liking the variety of opponents and how they play.

Detroit, Michigan - A 'Lightning' start by Tampa Bay at the Little Caesars Arena was too much for Detroit to come back from after going 2-0 down in the first period. Anthony Cirelli scored two goals on two shots in the period to put the Red Wings in an early hole.

Detroit fought back, having more of the attacking time and more shots, but they could not get past Andrei Vasilevskiy in the net, no matter how hard they tried. Patrick Kane had the game's best chance for Detroit with a one-on-one breakaway, sliding to his left, then quickly to his right with a fast wrist shot, but Vasilevskiy was able to get a leg pad on it and stop the puck before falling onto the loose puck and halting the attack.

In the final five minutes, the Red Wings went all out for a comeback, taking 8 shots in the timeframe but were turned away at every chance.

Falling to 1-1-0, Detroit will travel to face the Blue Jackets on Saturday.

Columbus, Ohio - The Detroit Red Wings showed poise and depth Tuesday night, building a three-goal lead and holding off a late push to defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2 at Nationwide Arena.

Detroit outshot Columbus 27-14 and controlled long stretches of play, but Columbus showed heart, attempting a third-period comeback that just fell short.

The Red Wings set the tone early in the first period when Lucas Raymond finished a crisp passing sequence from Alex DeBrincat and Moritz Seider.

In the second period, forward James van Riemsdyk doubled Detroit’s advantage. Assisted by Mason Appleton and rookie forward Ethan Finnie, van Riemsdyk capitalized on sustained full pressure, finishing from close range to make it 2-0.

The Red Wings pushed the lead to 3-0 in the third period when Andrew Copp converted off assists from Michael Rasmussen and defenseman Axel Sandin Pellikka, who recorded his first NHL point in his League debut.

Before puck drop, Sandin Pellikka skated solo for the traditional rookie lap — a moment marking the start of his NHL career. By night’s end, he had his first assist and valuable minutes in a road victory.


Columbus responded late in the third period when defenseman Ivan Provorov scored off a play involving forward Kirill Marchenko, cutting Detroit’s lead to 3-1.

The Blue Jackets added another goal in the closing minutes to make it 3-2 and create tension down the stretch, but Detroit remained composed, running the remaining clock for the win.

Through three games, Detroit has demonstrated resilience — an overtime win to open the season, a tough home loss, and now a controlled road victory.

Some decisions do not have to be explained and are unquestionable. Making Dylan Larkin the captain is one of those decisions. Everything begins with Larkin (27, 89). Captain since 2021, the Elite center remains the emotional engine of the franchise. Drafted in 2014 (Rd 1, 15), Larkin carries an $8.7M cap hit through 2028–29 and continues to anchor the club’s competitive window. His speed, two-way reliability, and offensive consistency define Detroit’s identity.

Wearing the “A” alongside him are two pillars of the new era. Lucas Raymond (21, 89), drafted in 2020 (Rd 1, 4), has already developed into a franchise winger. At just 21 with Elite potential, he’s locked in long-term and represents the offensive future of the organization. On the blue line, Moritz Seider (22, 87), drafted in 2019 (Rd 1, 6), serves as the defensive cornerstone and alternate captain. His blend of physicality, hockey IQ, and leadership maturity gives Detroit a foundational presence on the back end.

Veteran center Andrew Copp (29, 83) also carries leadership responsibilities, providing stability and professionalism down the middle.
