A Franchise Built on Championships Looks to Rise Again
Hockeytown is ready to rise again with a mix of young talent and veteran experience

September 10, 2023 | By Ted Kulfan | The Detroit News

Detroit, MI - For nearly a century, the Winged Wheel has represented more than a hockey team. It has stood as one of the defining institutions of professional sports, a franchise that became part of the identity of Detroit itself.

As one of the NHL’s Original Six, the Detroit Red Wings built their history on consistent success. From the dominance of Gordie Howe in the 1950s to the championship standard restored under Steve Yzerman in the 1990s, Detroit became synonymous with winning.

Between 1991 and 2016, the Red Wings reached the playoffs in 25 consecutive seasons — a streak that spanned eras and included four Stanley Cup championships (1997, 1998, 2002, 2008). The culture was so consistent that postseason hockey felt less like an accomplishment and more like a yearly tradition.

But dynasties, even in Hockeytown, fall on hard times and must rebuild. The Yankees have done it, the Patriots have done it, and Manchester United continues to do it. Now, it is time for the Red Wings to pull out of the struggle and get back to a postseason that fans so desperately need.

The playoff streak ended in 2016. The veteran core that had carried Detroit through two decades aged out, contracts made the salary cap difficult to maneuver, and the franchise began the difficult transition from contender to rebuilder.

Captain Dylan Larkin emerged as the face of the new era. Moritz Seider arrived and immediately stabilized the defense, flashing the potential of a franchise defenseman. Lucas Raymond brought dynamic offensive skill back to Detroit’s forward group.

And in the front office, Yzerman returned — this time as general manager — tasked with guiding the organization through one of the most methodical rebuilds in its history.

Now, as the 2023–24 season begins, Detroit has exited the "rebuild" mindset and they are now looking at the playoffs as a potential destination for their season and not a dream that is unreachable.

No one inside Little Caesars Arena is talking about dynasties or even a Stanley Cup. But with the banners of championship years hanging as reminders every time you enter the arena, the feeling and hunger of a championship will soon be back for a city and fanbase so desperate to win.

Yes sir! Excellent team choice (lowkey fuck the Red Wings, but I respect them at the same time).

Definitely following.

Career Rules

5 Minutes Periods
Overtime: 5 Minutes (3-on-3)
Salary cap on
Hybrid controls
Broadcast Cam

I will be asking for advice on line ups, trades, and drafts if anyone is interested in giving helpful ideas. This career is as much about me learning hockey as it is about having fun playing NHL.

I plan to play every game in the first month of the season and the last month of the season. During the season, I will play 1 and sim 3.

It took me forever to find a team. One that is not supposed to win (since I know I will suck) but one that I was semi-familiar with. Every one has heard of the Red Wings so they were an easy choice.

Red Wings Close Preseason With 5-2-0 Record, Enter Regular Season Healthy and Confident
Detroit went 5-2-0 in the preseason, ending with Kane's bizarro goal that brought joy in a meaningless game

Detroit, MI - As if fans were not anxious and excited enough about the Red Wings' upcoming season, the preseason was enough to get everyone locked in. Detroit went 5-2-0, showing a tight defense that held 4 shut outs and a strong attack that saw goals coming from six different players.

The fun ended with a thriller against the Buffalo Sabres in Detroit. Both sides took their chances but failed to score until the third period, when goals were exchanged in quick succession. The game went into a 3-on-3 overtime with the Sabres having the first three chances, but were denied the winning goal.

As the clock ticked down under two minutes, Patrick Kane took an unusual attempt, hitting the puck backwards and finding a lucky bounce over the goalie's glove and into the net. His celebration was one of shock and joy as he stood alone for a minute, letting the surprise hit him.

"Winning is always fun. We know the preseason is about more than that, but it helps to win. That was a lucky one, I hope plenty more like that come to me this season," Kane said after the win. "The boys are ready. We feel good, we feel confident. We are ready to go."

Detroit will start their season at New Jersey on October 12th, before the home opener against Tampa Bay only two days later.

(played the games as I tested sliders, controls, settings, etc. Some were really easy as I bumped up sliders and now have a good set to start with.)

Here is how we are lining up to start the season. This was the default tactic. Any suggestions or tweaks, feel free to throw them my way. Regular season begins tonight.

Patty Kane is a super fun veteran to have on the team still. Hopefully, he has a bit of a "turn back time" type of season and gets you something nice like 30+ goals.

Intrigued to see your prospect list and if Axel Sandin-Pellikka is available. Kid is pure money.

The game only had him as A. Pellikka in the roster that I downloaded, rated a 78 ovr, and only 18 years old, so I am certainly excited to use him.

Alright! Always up for a NHL Chise. Great choice with Detroit considering they've been in a Rebuild mode for couple years.
