Ligue 1 Opening Day Preview

Image

The Ligue 1 season begins with immediate drama as Olympique Lyonnais host Paris FC in a blockbuster opening clash.

All focus will be on Sonia Bompastor, facing her former club just weeks after a bitter departure. Lyon’s new-look 4-3-3 will debut, with Jonathan David leading the line between Jack Grealish and Bryan Mbeumo, while Ethan Mbappé anchors a dynamic midfield against his old side.

Paris FC remain dangerous, with Anthony Martial spearheading the attack alongside Luca Koleosho, and the experience of N’Golo Kanté shielding the defense.

Tactically, the match pits Bompastor’s high-tempo, possession-heavy system against a familiar core she once built. The emotional edge adds another layer, with several players on both sides sharing recent history.

For Lyon, it is the start of a new era. For Bompastor, it is something more personal.

Wait... Wasn't Anthony Martial sold to Bournemouth in order to finance the signing of Kylian Mbappé? Now he's apparently still at Paris FC with Kylian Mbappé nowhere to be seen. Or have I missed something?

Anyway, interesting twist to the tale, and it's quite an overhaul, you've made with a lot of familiar faces coming in. Three United-players in Onana, Yoro and Mbeumo. Fun stuff, joining the likes of Grealish, Jobe and Carvajal. Symbolic opening day win against PFC. Revenge incoming.

Lyon is interesting. One of the most impressive feats in football history to win 7 league titles in a row - for a club that has only won 7 league titles ever.

I would basically view this as all the transfer business done in the summer window at Paris FC was voided and Bompastor was fired. That's the easiest way for it to make sense going forwards. I had to do some stuff offline (like reloading my old save to select a new team) to make it work but that's the easiest sell.

Lyon Loan Hector Fort After Dani Carvajal Injury in Season Opener

Carvajal suffered an injury and will miss three months.

Olympique Lyonnais have acted quickly in the market, securing Héctor Fort on loan from Nottingham Forest with an €11M buy option.

The move comes after a setback in the season opener, where veteran right-back Dani Carvajal suffered an injury that will sideline him in what is expected to be his final season before retirement. Manager Sonia Bompastor moved swiftly to address the gap, opting for a player capable of stepping directly into the starting role.

Fort is expected to start immediately, offering energy and technical quality on the right flank. Meanwhile, academy graduate Adam Girard, who made the bench for the opener, is viewed as a long-term option but not yet ready for consistent first-team minutes. A loan move for the 16-year-old is now likely before the window closes.

It is another decisive move from Bompastor as she continues shaping her squad early in the season.
