Los Angeles ships Kikuchi to Cincinnati for Hayes

The Los Angeles Angels shed their biggest long-term contract not belonging to someone named Mike Trout to acquire an elite glove at the hot corner.

The Angels and Cincinnati Reds agreed to swap pitcher Yusei Kikuchi and third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes ahead of Friday's trade deadline, giving the Reds another decent arm in their rotation amid the struggles of young pitcher Chase Burns as Cincy pushes for a playoff spot.

"The Dodgers are all flash and the Angels are becoming all grit with these moves."

Meanwhile, the Angels continue to lean defensive with their trades this season as they begin to reshape their roster ahead of an offseason that looks to be a busy one in Los Angeles. The Angels are currently spending $162 million on their roster, but that will drop to just $48 million at the end of the season with the likes of Jo Adell, Zach Neto and Logan O'Hoppe facing arbitration but still a couple years from free agency.

Hayes, 29, is a top tier defensive player who joins Rafael Marchan, Ben Williamson and Addison Barger as acquisitions for the Halos this season. Hayes spent the first part of his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates before being traded to the Reds last season. He found playing time hard to come by after Cincinnati traded for Nolan Arenado a couple months ago. He's been okay at the plate with a .220 average with three homeruns and 15 RBIs. He is, however, a career .250 hitter so he can provide something at the plate.

With Hayes, the Angels now have elite gloves at second base, shortstop and third base, creating a vacuum behind their MLB-worst pitching staff.

The deal rids Los Angeles of the $21.2 million they were obligated to pay Kikuchi next season and leaves them with just Trout's albatross contract weighing down their roster building. There are rumors that Adell and O'Hoppe could both be moved either at the deadline or in the offseason if arbitration goes against the Angels.

Victor Mederos has been brought back up to take Kikuchi's spot in the Majors.

Trade deadline day brought no relief in Anaheim. The Angels turned to a bullpen game against Milwaukee and watched six arms surrender a dozen hits in a 7-2 loss, with Luis Rengifo doing most of the damage against his former club.

Milwaukee wasted no time getting to opener Joey Lucchesi. Rengifo singled in the first, Jackson Chourio doubled him home, and Brandon Lockridge chopped a single to center to bring Chourio around for a 2-0 lead before the Angels ever came to bat.

Los Angeles answered with two hits in the bottom of the first — Mike Trout and Yoán Moncada back-to-back — and promptly erased both on a Zach Neto double play. It was the theme of the night.

The third inning finished Lucchesi's evening in spirit if not in fact. Ryan Zeferjahn inherited the mess and served up back-to-back solo shots, Lockridge to center at 395 feet and Christian Yelich to right at 393, and it was 4-0.

Rengifo added a solo homer of his own to left in the fifth, a 383-foot drive that pushed it to five. The Angels finally scratched back in the bottom half against Alex Lange, who hit Denzer Guzman and Nolan Schanuel back-to-back before Trout singled to center to plate Guzman and Moncada lined a single to left for the second run. But Trout was cut down on the throw home (7-5-2), and the rally died there at 5-2.

The bullpen kept it close for a while — Drew Pomeranz struck out four over 2.1 innings, Jordan Romano worked around a bases-loaded jam in the sixth — but Rengifo put a bow on it in the ninth, taking Tayler Saucedo 380 feet to right for a two-run shot that scored William Contreras.

Rengifo took Player of the Game honors with a 3-for-5, two-homer, three-RBI night. Lange picked up the win despite allowing both Angels runs in two-thirds of an inning; Jared Koenig recorded his second save. Lucchesi took the loss.

Angels arms combined for 11 strikeouts and just one walk over nine innings — and still gave up 12 hits and seven runs. Trout, Moncada and Logan O'Hoppe each had two hits in a seven-hit night that produced two runs and two more double plays.

That 21.2M was too much to be paying him though. IF is basically complete with Hayes. Just need a 1B with some good reactions to catch those liners.
