David Igbinoghene has to be the brother of NFL player Noah Igbinoghene, that last name is too unique. Even if he's made up..

Time for the easy W to start the season off right.
must be some relation there
we're not overlooking any opponent at this point

BULLS OPEN 2028 WITH SLOPPY WIN IN THE RAIN
USF takes down Southern Miss in 2027 bowl rematch

Saturday August 26, 2028 | 3:30 PM | Raymond James Stadium | Tampa, Florida

Tampa, Florida - South Florida opened the 2028 season with a steady, workmanlike performance Saturday afternoon at Raymond James Stadium, pulling away from Southern Miss for a 28–7 victory that was never truly in doubt after halftime.

After a scoreless first quarter marked by early jitters and field-position battles, the Bulls found their rhythm in the second quarter and never looked back, controlling the game with efficiency on offense and physicality on defense.

USF finally broke through midway through the second quarter when Connor Suggs powered in from a yard out to cap a methodical drive and put the Bulls on the board. Just over a minute later, after Cameron Keys forced and recovered a fumble, South Florida struck again, this time through the air, as Suggs slipped out of the backfield and hauled in a four-yard touchdown pass from Locklan Hewlett, giving the Bulls a 14–0 advantage heading into the locker room.

Southern Miss had moments of success on the ground behind junior tailback JQ Gray, who consistently churned out tough yards, but the Golden Eagles struggled to sustain drives or threaten downfield against a disciplined USF defense.

The Bulls extended the lead early in the third quarter when Steven Snead broke through the middle for a five-yard touchdown run, pushing the margin to 21–0. Any lingering hope of a Southern Miss comeback was effectively extinguished midway through the fourth quarter when Hewlett capped his afternoon with a three-yard touchdown run of his own.

Southern Miss finally found the end zone in the closing seconds, as David Byron connected with Cordale Newcombe on a 13-yard touchdown pass, but it served only as a late consolation in an otherwise frustrating afternoon for the Golden Eagles.

Hewlett delivered a composed performance in his first game of the season, completing 25 of 34 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown while spreading the ball to eight different receivers. Jeremiah Stoneburner led the way with five catches for 52 yards, while Suggs contributed as both a runner and receiver, finishing with a rushing touchdown and a receiving score.

Defensively, South Florida set the tone throughout the afternoon. Isaiah Singleton wreaked havoc in the backfield with three tackles for loss and a sack, while Keys provided game-changing moments with a forced fumble and two recoveries, preventing Southern Miss from gaining momentum.

For Southern Miss, Gray was the offensive bright spot, rushing for 117 yards on 26 carries, but the Golden Eagles were held to just 97 passing yards and converted only four third downs on the day.

By the numbers, South Florida’s balance and efficiency told the story. The Bulls outgained Southern Miss 305–229 in total offense, converted more than half of their third-down opportunities, and turned red-zone chances into touchdowns, while the defense limited explosive plays and forced timely turnovers.

With the season opener in the books, USF leaves Raymond James Stadium with confidence and clarity, an offense capable of controlling the game and a defense that looks ready to dictate terms moving forward. Southern Miss, meanwhile, will look to build off its rushing success as it searches for consistency on offense in the weeks ahead.

USF POSTGAME REPORT
USF 28 – Southern Miss 7
Image

Offense
–USF opened the 2028 season with a controlled, methodical offensive performance, pulling away from Southern Miss after a scoreless first quarter to secure a convincing 28–7 victory at Raymond James Stadium. While not explosive, the Bulls steadily imposed their will through efficiency, balance, and red-zone execution.
–Quarterback Locklan Hewlett delivered a composed outing, completing 25 of 34 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown while adding a short rushing score. Hewlett distributed the ball to eight different receivers and consistently kept the offense on schedule.
–Connor Suggs was a central figure throughout the afternoon, accounting for two touchdowns, one on the ground and one through the air. His 1-yard rushing score opened the scoring, and his 4-yard touchdown reception late in the second quarter gave USF critical separation before halftime.
–The Bulls leaned on timely contributions from multiple skill players. Steven Snead added a 5-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter, while Jeremiah Stoneburner led the receiving corps with five catches for 52 yards. Jordyn Bridgewater and Snead each chipped in key receptions to extend drives.
–USF finished the afternoon converting four of five red-zone trips into touchdowns, a major point of emphasis entering the season.
Defense
–USF’s defense set the tone from the opening series, limiting Southern Miss to just 229 total yards and preventing the Golden Eagles from generating consistent momentum.
–The Bulls bottled up Southern Miss’ passing attack, allowing only 97 passing yards and intercepting two passes. The secondary remained disciplined, forcing short throws and rallying quickly to the ball.
–Isaiah Singleton anchored the unit with seven tackles, three tackles for loss, and a sack, repeatedly disrupting plays in the backfield. Eric Rance added seven tackles and a tackle for loss of his own.
–Cameron Keys delivered a game-changing performance, forcing a fumble and recovering two loose balls, swinging field position and stalling Southern Miss drives.
–Despite Southern Miss finding some success on the ground behind Gray, the Bulls consistently tightened in key moments, holding the Golden Eagles to just four third-down conversions.
Special Teams
–Kicker Dom Bragg was flawless in the opener, converting all four extra point attempts.
–Punter Dorian McSurdy was called upon just once, delivering a 46-yard punt that flipped field position.
–In the return game, Lyle Dragos and Elton York provided steady contributions, combining for 34 return yards without turnovers.
