As the All-Star break fades into the rearview mirror, Boston’s front office turns fully to July. The Red Sox are firmly in the postseason chase, and rival clubs are watching how aggressively the organization—now steered day-to-day by special assistant Kyle Red with Craig Breslow—converts a crowded major-league roster into October upgrades.

The posture is clear: add impact pitching without raiding a top-tier farm. Internally, the board starts with a mid-rotation starter to slot behind Garrett Crochet and Brayan Bello. Hunter Dobbins and Tanner Rourk have held serve in the middle, while Walker Buehler’s hot April has cooled. The bullpen market, by contrast, is on a slow simmer. With Aroldis Chapman locking down the ninth and Garrett Whitlock and Justin Wilson stabilizing leverage innings, Boston can afford to wait out a notoriously volatile relief landscape.

Everything else flows from one question the club has wrestled with since spring: where does Ceddanne Rafaela help most over six months and into October? The Red Sox alleviated an outfield logjam by sliding Rafaela to shortstop, pushing the slumping Trevor Story into a reduced role. That dynamic has flipped the outfield calculus. In March, Duran’s defense and contract arc made him the obvious trade candidate. By July, he’s become a tone-setter—top-tier production in average, extra-base hits, runs and steals—with the baserunning that fuels Boston’s run game.
