nah we keeping the baby faced assassin in Bean Town. Injuries forced the Sox to press Raffy to play the field again and that lead to the breadown - but without injuries forcing us to play him in the field there haven't been any more rifts. Plus "Kyle Red

we went on a bit of a slide (3-10) so we're out of 1st place in the east but still lead dog in the WC race

Boston Red Sox Trade Deadline Preview
As the All-Star break fades into the rearview mirror, Boston’s front office turns fully to July. The Red Sox are firmly in the postseason chase, and rival clubs are watching how aggressively the organization—now steered day-to-day by special assistant Kyle Red with Craig Breslow—converts a crowded major-league roster into October upgrades.
The posture is clear: add impact pitching without raiding a top-tier farm. Internally, the board starts with a mid-rotation starter to slot behind Garrett Crochet and Brayan Bello. Hunter Dobbins and Tanner Rourk have held serve in the middle, while Walker Buehler’s hot April has cooled. The bullpen market, by contrast, is on a slow simmer. With Aroldis Chapman locking down the ninth and Garrett Whitlock and Justin Wilson stabilizing leverage innings, Boston can afford to wait out a notoriously volatile relief landscape.
Everything else flows from one question the club has wrestled with since spring: where does Ceddanne Rafaela help most over six months and into October? The Red Sox alleviated an outfield logjam by sliding Rafaela to shortstop, pushing the slumping Trevor Story into a reduced role. Rafaela has handled the position, but two early dings have reignited the long-term debate, particularly as Roman Anthony forces his way into everyday consideration. Keeping Rafaela at short narrows the path to meaningful offensive upgrades. Moving him back to center immediately crowds the grass with Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, and Anthony—while Rafael Devers at DH eliminates the traditional rotation valve.
That dynamic has flipped the outfield calculus. In March, Duran’s defense and contract arc made him the obvious trade candidate. By July, he’s become a tone-setter—top-tier production in average, extra-base hits, runs and steals—with the baserunning that fuels Boston’s run game. Abreu, meanwhile, remains immensely valuable around the league: plus defense, on-base skills, and years of control. The front office’s working premise, according to rival evaluators, is straightforward: Duran is close to untouchable; Abreu is the cleanest path to a frontline arm; Anthony is foundational.
That’s why Seattle continues to profile as Boston’s most logical match. The Mariners have rotation surplus and run-suppressed offense; the Red Sox have outfield surplus and rotation needs. League sources expect the conversation to start high—Logan Gilbert and George Kirby are the names everyone asks on—but to gravitate toward the more attainable tier of Bryan Woo and Bryce Miller, where years of control meet the pitch traits Boston covets. The broad outlines mirror July’s usual equilibrium: Seattle won’t move a premium arm without a multi-year bat; Boston won’t headline a package with both Abreu and a top-five prospect.
There are pivots. MacKenzie Gore fits Boston’s development model if Washington prioritizes present-value offense. In Pittsburgh, Paul Skenes is off the table, but Johan Oviedo-type frameworks have been discussed in industry circles. Tarik Skubal remains a perennial check-in; the Tigers’ asking price, as always, reflects ace performance and control.
An outfield-for-starter trade triggers a second decision at shortstop. The internal lanes are threefold: ride out Story and bet on a second-half course correction; summon a glove-first option like Meyer as a run-prevention bridge; or shop a thin market. Bo Bichette would be the headline swing, but intra-division mechanics are complicated even with free agency looming. Eugenio Suárez offers right-handed power on the infield, though adding a third baseman would require creative shuffling elsewhere.
For now, the read inside Jersey Street is that Boston prefers a big-league-for-big-league solution over a prospect liquidation. The neatest version of that plan is also the most obvious: restore Rafaela to center, move from the outfield surplus—most plausibly Abreu—for a controllable starter, and trust Anthony’s bat to carry while the farm stays intact. With two weeks to go, the Red Sox have leverage and options. The task for Red and Breslow is to turn that into October innings without denting 2026 and beyond.
