CRISHON MCCRAY HAULS IN A TD PASS FROM TOMMY ULATOWSKI IN THE 4TH QUARTER
---
Knoxville, TN - It was supposed to be a beatdown when Kent State travelled into SEC country to face Tennessee under the lights. However, with the help of a strong defensive effort and an opportune, mostly mistake free offense the Flashes had a chance all the way to the final gun.

Tommy Ulatowski threw for 358 yards and a score and kept the turnovers under control, throwing just one interception early on.

The rushing game was effective with Gavin Garcia putting up 76 yards on 14 carries and Ky Thomas adding 28 yards on 8 carries.

Tennessee showed their SEC speed with all three of their touchdowns coming on long passes. Nico Iamaleava connected with Bru McCoy for a 59 yard score in the first quarter. After Kent State tied it back up with a one yard TD run by Garcia the Volunteers scored on a pair of Iamaleava TD passes to Squirrell White, a 64 yarder just before halftime and from 72 yards out late in the third quarter.

Ulatowski connected with Chrishon McCray on a 17 yard TD early in the fourth quarter and each team added a field goal after that.

"You know in our position from where we were at last year we absolutely feel good about this game." Kent State head coach Kenni Burns said after the game.

Iamaleava threw for 213 yards and three scores while Dylan Sampson picked up 132 on the ground.

The Tennessee pass rush was a big problem for Kent State with them racking up a total of eight sacks. James Pearce Jr led the way with 4.5.

Kent State will travel to face Penn State next week.

MAC FOOTBALL KENT STATE GOLDEN FLASHES
Coaches Corner

Offensive Coordinator Jordan McAlary
By Don Knotts | @theotherdonknotts | September 16, 2024, 9:14am EDT

Each week in the days following Kent State's game I will spend a few moments chatting with members of the coaching staff. I'll share some key points in this column.

This morning I spoke with offensive coordinator Jordan McAlary following Kent State's loss at Tennessee.

Close game down in Tennessee the other night. What are some positives you all are taking away from the game despite it being a loss?
Good results in the passing game, high completion percentage and guys were getting open. Pretty successful in the running game too. Didn't look too rattled out there most of the time.

What's something you're looking at to improve upon?
Pass protection. Anytime you give up eight sacks in a game you've got to look at that. Whether it's a personnel thing or a scheme thing you've got to look at it.

Can you give us a player of the week?
Probably have to go with (QB) Tommy (Ulatowski this week. He took a lot of hits but he stood in there and delivered good passes right to the end.

You're on the road at Penn State this Saturday. What are you doing to prepare for that environment?
A lot of the same stuff as last week. Lots of noise. Working the silent counts. Working on communicating the plays and any audibles, adjustments, pass pro calls. It's going to be loud again.

Respect on keeping it close against Tennessee. Them boys over at Penn State though, they might eat y'all up. But if you hanging with the Vols, then we could be in for a surprise here :hmm:
